    Departing Seattle

    18.–20. sep. 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

After our successful housesit, it was time to say goodbye to Seattle and the mainland.
We checked in and boarded our new home for the next nineteen days. The Oceania Riviera.
It is a beautiful room on a beautiful ship.
The best part about it is we are sharing the trip with some good friends.

  • Ketchikan

    20. september 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌧 55 °F

The first stop on our cruise. Off and on rain, but not terribly cold. Because of heavy rain the day before, the salmon weren't swimming up the river. There were salmon, just none risking the raging current. We also got to see the famous Creek Street and walk the married man's trail. Overall, I wasn't impressed with the town.
We did see whales on the way there.

  • Sitka

    21. september 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

The second stop was Sitka. Again, it was raining. Much harder at times. We hiked out a trail in hopes of spotting a bear eating salmon, but no luck. We did see salmon, and we learned what a muskeg is.
After the hike, we walked to the raptor center and got a little education on eagles and other birds in the area.
We lucked out and caught a taxi back to town where we got to see hundreds of salmon trying to swim up a gated off river. Its where their eggs are harvested for conservation purposes.

  • Icy Strait Point

    22. september 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌧 48 °F

Best chance to see a bear eating salmon out of a river. They said. See lots of wildlife they said. Spotting wildlife is not guaranteed, they said. At least they didn't lie about that part. spent three hours driving around in a van, and we saw a squirrel and a deer.
We did go on a short hike down to the river where we saw half eaten salmon and piles of bear poop. And a couple of people spotted salmon jumping in the river.
There is a gondola ride from the dock to the pickup point, which was fun. Again, it was raining.
It was Anna's birthday, so while we were off the ship, they decorated our cabin with balloons and a banner. Then, at dinner, she got a special cake and sung to.

  • Humbolt Glacier

    23. september 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌧 41 °F

Technically, a sea day, it's touted as a stop on our cruise. Fortunately, we had beautiful weather, so we were able to stand outside and get some great shots of the glacier. Including a video of a calving event. Unfortunately, there was not much wildlife to be seen.Læs mere

  • Humbolt Glacier

    23. september 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌧 41 °F

Somehow, in the middle of many bad weather days, we lucked out and got sunny clear skies the day we cruised up next to the Glacier. It was an incredible experience. I was able to catch on film one of the calving events.
And almost as if it was planned, as we were leaving, the clouds got thicker, and the winds picked up. Perfect timing.

  • Kodiak, AK

    25. september 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌧 50 °F

Another wet port stop. This one required a ride to shore in the life boats. We did see a number of sea otters frolicking. We visited the visitors center and walked a short distance through town. They have uniquely painted garbage cans.
And of course, once we were back on board, the sun came out, and we were blessed with a beautiful rainbow.

Our last stop in Alaska and the USA. Although it was cold, it was a beautiful sunny day. We walked the 1.5 miles into town as a group and visited the big store and a museum. We saw lots of eagles and a few sea otters.Læs mere

  • Riveara 2.5 K Shuffle

    1. oktober 2025, North Pacific Ocean ⋅ 🌬 54 °F

It is truly remarkable that our friend Michael, who has completed marathons on all seven continents, has maintained a running streak of at least one race per month for an impressive 27 years, even during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. To continue his streak, he organized the Oceana 2.5K on our cruise from Seattle to Japan. (He was unable to find a race in Japan), which involved 15 laps on a particularly windy day. On the windy side of the course, where the ladies ran arm in arm, facing the strong gusts, there were no pictures taken. It certainly felt as though we might be carried away by the wind!Læs mere

  • Hakodate, Japan

    4. oktober 2025, Japan ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Our first stop in Japan was on one of the northernmost islands called Hokkaido. The town Hakodate has a lot of history because it was one of the first international trading ports in Japan.
We had fun taking the tram through town where we learned the proper way to get on and off.
We visited a fort in the shape of a pentagon. Then, back across town where we took the ropeway up to the top of the mountain and back. Then we walked around in some of the historical district before visiting the red brick warehouses and heading back to the ship.

  • Miyako, Japan

    5. oktober 2025, Japan ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

Our second stop in Japan. There is not much here that is accessible on a day trip from the port, but we went to Jodogohama Beach and visited an ancient shrine in town.
The locals were extremely generous and put on a show for the ship just prior to departure.Læs mere

  • Hitahinaki, Japan

    6. oktober 2025, Japan ⋅ 🌧 77 °F

Our third stop in Japan was Hitatchinaki. The main attraction in this town is it's seaside garden. A huge botanical garden. In october, the Kochia are supposed to be in bloom. But we were a little early. They produce a fiery red blossom that blanket the hills, and some were in bloom, but not enough to make it incredible.
We also made a stop at a local Costco and enjoyed looking at the differences between here and USA.

  • Yokohama, Japan

    7. oktober 2025, Japan ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

We arrived in Yokohama knowing that there was an overnight still on the boat before departing the next day. Anna and I broke away from the group and went and saw the Landmark tower, one of the highest buildings in Japan, and some of the sites near the boat. We were worn out from the cruise and also sad that it was ending, so we weren't overly energetic.Læs mere
