As I walk through the Elan Valley

    July 17, 2024 in Wales ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Today we set off on the journey to North Wales, not going to lie it was VERY long!
To break up the journey we stopped off at Elan Valley in Mid- Wales where there is a huge area filled with reservoirs and dams. It was kind of like a safari park where you drive for a bit and then get out to see the views. I honestly couldn't believe how huge this place was! We had a whistle stop tour around the main dams, had a picnic by some sheep, and of course ice cream!
We very easily spent 4 hours there, then thought we should probably get on with the rest of the journey, which was another 2 hours 🙈
After a journey which literally felt like riding a roller coaster through Snowdonia, we arrived at our cottage in Blaenau Ffestiniog 🏡
Pizza and an early night is needed!

Today we visited the Majestic Portmeirion, a stunning and whimsical leisure village which was apparently inspired by Italy.
We arrived early which was ideal as none of the swarms of tourists had descended yet. We had a lovely stroll, coffee and walk in the village and surrounding parkland. It was lovely sunshine and you could have fooled me that we were in an Italian village.
We did then have a spot of rain which reminded us that we were in Wales!
Had a spot of lunch, a walk around the coast and racked up 15,00 steps.
When we were satisfied we had explored every inch possible , we headed off to a nearby town , Porthmadog, to go to Tesco and the petrol station. This is the nearest big town to where we are staying which is still 12 miles away, showing how remote we are!

  • Barmouth

    July 19, 2024 in Wales ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Today we visited Barmouth, a pretty seaside town. I'd seen a walk on Alltrails which went over the famous train bridge, so we thought we'd give it a go. Casually ended up doing 6 miles! It was a stunning walk with the sea in front of us and Snowdonia behind. It was also really warm today, so after the walk we had fish and chips on the beach, and I had a little siesta. We then had a look around the town which had some cool antique shops.
Rounded off the day with an ice cream, and a well deserved chill after doing 25,000 steps in the sun!

  • Men of Harlech

    July 20, 2024 in Wales ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Rainy day today, luckily we had some rainy day options planned!
We visited Harlech Castle this morning and had a wander round the village, where apparently there is the world's steepest Street, but it didn't actually seem that steep!
We had a rainy day picnic in the car and headed to Cwmorthin waterfalls, Blaenau Ffestiniog, which isn't far from where we're staying, as the rain had eased off.
We found the landscape really interesting as we were surrounded by the mountains, but also waste slate tips which were just amazing. We also found a ruined Chapel where some sheep were seeking solace from the rain.
Unfortunately we then had a horrendous downpour when walking back to the car and we got absolutely soaked.
We had to then pop back to the cottage to get changed before going to Zipworld, where we'd booked underground golf. We got to travel underground on a mine shaft 500m underground in the disused mine. There was even a slide! It was a bit chilly down there, around 7 degrees.
Despite the rain, we did loads today and plan on having a nice rest this evening to warm up!

    July 21, 2024 in Wales ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Last day today! To split up the journey back we stopped at Powis Castle. Always nice to use our national trust cards to get a free day out. It was an amazingly restored castle and the gardens were absolutely stunning. We really enjoyed a nice walk and the last few hours of our holiday!Read more
