HK Reunion: A Whirlwind Italian Escape
Our Hong Kong alumni from Baptist University recently converged for a memorable long weekend in Italy, kicking off the adventure in picturesque Lucerne. Kaycee and her husband, Tully, were the first to arrive, joining us for a delightful day exploring the old city's charming streets. We savored authentic Yunnan cuisine and, of course, made essential stops at Chäs Barmettler for their renowned cheesecake and Bachmann for their irresistible pistachio ice cream and tiramisu. As dusk settled, Theo finished work, and we journeyed onward to Como to rendezvous with Jacqueline and Chris. Our group reunion extended digitally, too, with video calls to Wilson, fresh from his PhD defense; Mariel and Jason in sunny California; Alex and Conchita in Reunion; and Patrick with his son in England.
Our first Italian evening was a feast! We indulged in comforting lasagna and a spread of other Italian delights, punctuated by the joyful ritual of tiramisu – truly, before and after the main course!
The next morning, we ascended to the lighthouse, opting to save the famed poetry walk for a later, more intimate exploration (which Theo and I eventually did!). The panoramic views from the top were breathtaking, perfectly complemented by rich coffee and what the chef at Osteria Acqua Ciara proudly proclaimed, and we heartily agreed, was the best tiramisu of the trip.
The following day began with a delightful surprise for Jacqu and Chris: a hearty breakfast spread of eggs, crispy bacon, fresh bread, and an assortment of fruits. Then came the true test of our reunion spirit: a collective squeeze into a Fiat designed for four, all six of us somehow fitting! Theo and Chris bravely took the front, while the four of us piled into the back – I even managed to perch on the floor, discreetly covered by my jacket, just in case of any curious police.
Milan unfolded before us, a captivating blend of history and contemporary flair. Milano Centrale, a magnificent architectural marvel, set the tone. As the city of fashion and exquisite cuisine, Milan invited us to leisurely graze through its culinary offerings. Theo and I embraced the city bike system, weaving through the streets from one bike spot to the next, a truly enjoyable way to experience the urban pulse. As evening descended, we wandered along the serene river, discovering a surprisingly elegant dim sum restaurant. Our walk continued, revealing Milan's romantic side – hearts, it seemed, were etched into every corner. Later, Jacq, Chris, Theo, and I ventured into the city's nightlife. The club's music might have been underwhelming for the price, but the vibrant atmosphere was undeniable, and indeed, love seemed to be in the air.
The final day brought bittersweet goodbyes. Tully and Kaycee set off for Rome, while we lingered for another day in Milan before retracing our steps to Como and then Lucerne. Jacqueline headed back to Parisian life, and Chris embarked on an exciting adventure to Egypt. What an unforgettable weekend!
This trip rekindled something special: I found myself falling deeply in love with Theo all over again. And the sparks between Chris and Jacqueline? After two decades, there was an undeniable crackle in the air. The story, it seems, is far from over...Les mer
