  • Kristiansand, Norway

    July 24, 2023 in Norway ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

First port is Kristiansand, largest city in southern Norway I believe. Lots of fishing nearby. The old town is an area lined with white buildings primarily from the 19th century. Walked around asking the waterfront, then turned to go into the Old Town area, which includes the town square and the local (Lutheran) cathedral.Read more

  • Lunch at Drommeplassen

    July 24, 2023 in Norway ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Lori and Karl both got a curry chicken sandwich that was made with apple slices, greens, and mango chutney. Lori got peach iced tea to drink while Karl got a lemon ginger soft drink. We also got a scone and a dessert that looked like a scotcheroo (but wasn't). It was all delicious.Read more

  • Shopping

    July 24, 2023 in Norway ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We walked around the old section of town, checking out the various shops. We found a couple of stores selling books, puzzles, and games! The nesting box for Wingspan was 1795 kroner but was 40% off, so it would have been a little over $100, including tax. We resisted temptation and did not buy any new games or puzzles. We also browsed through a few of the clothing stores and a grocery store.Read more

  • Tivoli Gardens

    July 25, 2023 in Denmark ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Our weather was spectacular today, with blue skies for much of the time. After the canal tour, we walked to Tivoli Gardens. Tivoli is an amusement park and gardens. (Tivoli was the inspiration for Walt Disney when he created Disneyland.) Since we had bought a combination ticket for the canal boat and Tivoli Gardens, we were able to bypass the long line to buy tickets at Tivoli and go directly to the short entry line to have our tickets scanned. It's all a cozy space and took us a bit to navigate around using the map they gave us. We rode on one ride, a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale ride, which was similar to Haunted Mansion/Spaceship Earth style rides (for those familiar with Disney). Had ice cream there (apricot for Lori, green apple for Karl), and then we headed over to the LEGO store as Kyle and Mandy headed back towards the ship for their own adventures. We had to check out a LEGO store in Denmark (the home of LEGO).Read more

  • Dinner

    July 25, 2023 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Karl and Lori dined at Nyhavns Færgekro. We had the herring starter - 3 different kinds of herring. They had a herring buffet that ended at 5pm. Karl had the Danish chicken tartlets while Lori had the Danish pork meatballs. The building that housed the restaurant we ate at was built in the 1600s and had been used for many different things. In the early 1900s it was the home of the White Star Line, so Danish passengers lined up here to buy their tickets for their ride on the Titanic.Read more

  • After dinner back to the hotel

    July 25, 2023 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

After dinner we walked down the canal address and of course found some more ice cream! More freshly made waffles comes and different flavors. Karl had Bailey's and Lori had Lemon sorbet. There's canals are lined with 17th century buildings, and Habs Christian Anderson actually lived in 3 of them! The yellow number 18 was one of them.

After we walked around the canal area here and got our obligatory Nyhavn selfie we took the Metro and then the cruise shuttle bus back to our ship.

Note: The Metro system here is known as a model for cities to follow since it is very clean and efficient. We bought single tickets (good for 1 hour and 15 minutes). There is nowhere to scan the ticket, so it is on an honor system - except they do have Metro employees who come around and check for tickets now and then while you are on the Metro. On our ride back, an employee did check our tickets. If you do not have a valid ticket, you will be fined 750 Danish kroner (about US$120).

  • Day 2 in Copenhagen

    July 26, 2023 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We were only supposed to have 1 day in Copenhagen, as today we were supposed to visit Skagen, Denmark. When we docked yesterday morning, they announced we would be staying in Copenhagen overnight due to the weather in Skagen as the gusty winds would make it unsafe for us to dock there.

Day 2 in Copenhagen started with Karl and Lori walking to the city bus stop at Pier 1. (This was cheaper than riding the cruise shuttle bus.) Karl bought tickets in the app. We rode the city bus to the Metro station. Since our ticket was good for either bus or metro for 1 hr and 15 mins, we hopped directly on the Metro. We got off at a new station and discovered we had to take 6 escalator rides plus a set of steps to get out of the station.

Once out by Frederiks Kirke we navigated to the large green park by Kastellet. On the southeast side of the park is Frihedsmuseet, the Museum of Danish Resistance. Fascinating museum. We ended up pushing our time there and using our extensive knowledge of the Copenhagen public transportation system to switch to a different bus stop at the last moment which got us onto the boat with an amazing 10 minutes to spare.

  • Museum of Danish Resistance

    July 26, 2023 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

This museum is located in Kastellet. Their credit card reader wasn't working, and since we had no cash (USD or Danish kroner), we offered to go online and buy tickets. The museum attendant told us to go through the museum and stop back on our way out to pay as she thought the credit card reader would be working by then.

The museum explained how Denmark was occupied by Germany during the war. (Germany gave Denmark various terms that Denmark had to agree to, otherwise Germany would start bombing). Denmark really didn't seem to have a choice.

The resistance in Denmark had few members to start with, but it grew as the war (and the occupation by Germany) dragged on. The museum also told the story of 5 people who worked for or against the Resistance.

  • Oslo, Norway - Akershus Fortress

    July 27, 2023 in Norway ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We decided we were tired of walking, so we bought a Hop on/Hop off bus ticket (since they are conveniently at the Pier just waiting for people to disembark from the cruise ship).

We got off at the next stop, the Akershus Fortress. We walked around the grounds, which open at 6 a.m. We were not able to go into the Home Front Museum, which talked about occupation during the war since it doesn't open until 10 a.m.Read more

  • London Heathrow Airport

    July 29, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We got off the cruise ship in Southhampton, England, at about 8:00 a.m. We had booked transportation to the London Heathrow Airport through the cruise company, so we were able to immediately hop on a coach bus for the 1 hr & 45 min ride to the airport. Flight is currently on time. We are waiting at the gate to board our flight to Chicago!Read more
