Our coach driver manoeuvred us around some very challenging hairpin bends in a slow climb up to the top, with regular stops for important things such as coffee and "rest rooms" as well as photo opportunities. Our guide (a German PE teacher, married to a local farmer) kept us entertained with tales from her husband's childhood, when communication between villagers was done by whistling ( a UNESCO recognised language known as il silbo) .
