    Venice Day 1

    12 сентября, Италия ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Venice, what a city! My first impressions of Venice was that it had a bit more grit and character than I was expecting. A lot of Italians, normal streets and very very old buildings. This is in addition to the beautiful buildings and churches everywhere in the city.

I started off the day with an early mass, and it feels like there’s a church every corner. I then wondered around wherever my feet would take me, soaking it all in before heading to meet up with Mike, Lara and meet Teddy!

It was a great reunion and soon enough it felt like we’d picked up right where we left off. Lunch with delicious, the authentic carbonara in particular was great. We were also staying on the north side of the island which was surprisingly residential, really nice and quiet.

We then spent the afternoon heading over to San Marco, taking in the square and basilica. Lifting Teddy and his stroller over every bridge was a workout but hard to complain when surrounded by such a nice city.

On the way home we stopped by a local wine shop, which they pump out of bladders using a hose. €1.90 per bottle! Incredible stuff. After a few sips back home on our balcony, the local nonnas loving the sight of Teddy, we finished off with a great dinner with Jack joining. Of course with Lara in attendance, tiramisu was not being missed.

  • Dolomites Day 1

    14 сентября, Италия ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

After a long travel day the day before, and a nightmare car hire story for the ages, we arrived in Cortino D’Ampezzo. What a beautiful town! Very alpine with wooden little chalets and restaurants with a very traditional feeling.

Our first hike was a beauty. We started our hike with a steep incline. As our trail guide I didn’t really have a reference point for 1km of elevation over the first 5kms, and boy did we feel it. With our food and water pack, Teddy’s bag and Teddy himself, we really earned our stripes in this ascent. At one point it was a full climb using hands to get up rocks with Teddy hanging off my chest, catching the sweat dripping of my nose. Lara also did very well a few months post baby, this was not a hike for the faint hearted, but the views were spectacular.

Alpine green forests, and where these cliffs or rock which weren’t a typical triangle summit, but would just form columns that went up and up. There were photo opporunities everywhere you turned. Teddy earns a special mention for not just a lack of crying, but almost non stop chatter and laughter. Every person passing us got a hello and smile from him. He was certainly a crowd favourite.

While at some point it felt like we would never make it back to the car, after more than 5 hours we made it. Legs burning, mood wavering, we were there.

Dinner was a quiet affair, back at our lovely wooden old chalet. We cooked up some pasta and had beautiful cheap Italian wine. What more could you ask for.

  • Dolomites Day 2

    15 сентября, Италия ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Day 2 the legs were pretty sore, so after a cappuccino and bakery breakfast we made our way to a much more chilled hike. This was 5km around Lago Di Braies, which has incredible blue, clear water. Framed by wooden alpine forests and towering mountains, this was incredible viewing.

Given it was accessible without a kilometre of incline over loose scree, it was a little more crowded, but not enough to detract from a really relaxing hike around the lake. Teddy once again was in his element, getting a smile from everyone he could. The legs were very thankful of this choice.

For dinner we ventured into town and ate at Dolo’meats restaurant. It was very favourable we were on baby time, as just after we got our table a line appeared out the door. Mike was stoked with the schnitzel on the menu, a benefit of the very northern Italian location, and the rest of the pastas were stunning. I ventured for the risotto of the day which was nettle. Wasn’t something I’d cook at home, but it was nice and the waiter said that and the nettle soup were very traditional. The wine without saying was lovely, a light valpolicella (or something like that) and a slightly heavier barbera. Unlike Australia there seems to be a thousand wine varieties here, which makes for great exploring.

  • Dolomites Day 3

    16 сентября, Италия ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

With the day starting off with pouring rain, we decided against a repeat of Day 1. We opted for a 11km trail with 500m climb to a waterfall. We only drive 15 minutes from home, and it felt like there was hikes wherever you went.

This was still no baby hike, and as I was semi training for the Camino, I packed all our gear into my hiking pack. The quads really felt the brunt of this, but the views were worth it a hundred times over.

The trail followed a river up to the waterfall, which you could climb behind, giving spectacular views. We sat up there for a long time, just soaking it all in. With 2 months left before I leave Europe, I was really trying to capture as many mental images as I could.

We spent the late afternoon in town, enjoying a view beers in the beautiful town centre. As Jack had guessed the furthest away for last night’s bill, we also got to enjoy him sampling the local grappa.

Last dinner! We went to a fancy supermarket (Lara’s dream situation) and picked up pasta and wine for dinner. Even going to a fancy place, 5 euro bottles just seems incredible. Dinner was lovely, and we all promised to come back to the Dolomites. Stunning place.
