Another 515 mile walk across Spain

  • Irun to San Sebastian

    12 de abril de 2024, España ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Wow, what a day. 18 miles over two mountains. 3009 feet of elevation gain. But the scenery was incredible. . There was a split in the trail. The high route took me up 2000 feet and offered amazing ocean views. Tomorrow I rest. .Leer más

  • San Sebastian to Zarautz -14 miles

    14 de abril de 2024, España ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Today's walk was 14 miles in 5.5 hours. It was a tough walk with a zillion hills but it was delightful. A lot of the hike had the ocean to my right with green fields rolling up to me. I finally saw a couple of fellow pilgrims, a lady from Denmark and another from Australia. My legs are tired tonight so I have them elevated.Leer más

  • Zurautz to Deba 15.6 miles 6 hours

    15 de abril de 2024, España ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

The day started out great. I was out of the hotel at 7:15 and on my way to Deba. The ocean was beautiful and the lights of Zurautz behind me were stunning. I soon got to Geteria, the birthplace is the first navigator to sail around the world. His name was Juan Sebastian Encano. He was placed at the helm after Magellan was killed. The rest of the day was still beautiful with many mountain to climb and go over. Tomorrow's hike may be the hardest on the Del Norte. Wish me luck.Leer más

  • Deba to Merkins. 16 miles- 8 hours

    16 de abril de 2024, España ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

They say that today's hike is the hardest that the Camino del Norte has to offer. I hope that it is because I don't want to do a harder one. It was brutal. 16 miles and 3000 feet of elevation gain. Not helping was that it was raining hard and the wind was howling. Doing today's hike was an achievement and I'm proud of myself, but it was kinda miserable. Not a day for pictures.Leer más

  • Day 5 Merkina to Monastery Zenarrusa

    17 de abril de 2024, España ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

A short day today for two reasons. One was to give my legs a time to rest and two, the monks at this monastery brew their own beer that suppose to be wonderful. The walk today was delightful, up a gentle creek valley to the village of Bolivar. Bolivar is the birth place is Simon Bolivar. He was a huge in South American politics and revolution.
The monastery here is beautiful and very basic.

  • Monastary Zenniar to Gurnica 13 miles

    18 de abril de 2024, España ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

I spent last night in a monastery where I felt as close to being a real pilgrim as I ever have. I sept in a room with 3 other people that had no heat. At over a 1000 feet of elevation it was cold. I went to Mass and then the Monks fed us free of charge, just like the did for the pilgrims 800 years ago. Amazing!! Their beer was sensational.
Today I walked 13 mile to the city of Guernica. This city is famous for being carpet bombed just prior to WW2. Hitler ordered the bombing as a favor to Franco who was fighting the Baste.
Tomorrow it's another 13 mile day and then on Saturday I go in to Bilbao and visit the Guttenheim museum.

  • Lezama to Bilbao 10 miles

    20 de abril de 2024, España ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

Bilbao, my god what a beautiful city. I was looking around and said to myself that it looked like a very European city. Then I pitched myself and said, "Da, it is a European city." I visited the Guggenheim Museum and enjoyed the outside more than the inside.Leer más

  • Bilbao to Pobena 9.5 miles. 3 hours

    21 de abril de 2024, España ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

Not a lot going on today, just up and down mountains. I've noticed that the hills are not as high as they were before Bilbao. That's a good thing. I've noticed something else today; I'm seeing a lot more pilgrims. It seems a lot of hikers don't want to go through the mountains as I did so they started in Bilbao. So they skipped it. That's to bad because they missed some gorgeous scenery and wonderful cities like Gurnicia. On the Camino Francis a lot of pilgrims skip the Masada for basically the same reason. Its really to bad. I love the Masada and I love the first part of the Norte from Irun to Bilbao. Both have given wonderful memories.
I'm looking forward to tomorrow and arriving at Castro Urdailes. I'll be back on the ocean again and the city suppose to be stunning.

  • Pobena to Castro Uediales 10 miles

    22 de abril de 2024, España ⋅ ⛅ 52 °F

I have made it to Castro Urdiales and I'm a happy pilgrim for a couple of reasons. One is that I have now walked 125 miles across northern Spain. And I now have less than 400 miles to go - yeah!!
Plus I have now crossed over the border from the Basque to the Cantabria Provence of Spain. So I have reached two milestones. Feels good.
Castro Urdiales is a beautiful little seaport know for its anchovy fishing. It was also occupied and sacked by Nepoleon's army in 1813. It's a wonderful place. Tomorrow it's suppose to rain all day. - Damn.

    23 de abril de 2024, España ⋅ 🌫 52 °F

Miserable day. It poured down rained most of the day. I've never been so happy to get to an Albergue. After today the weather suppose to be clear for a few days - yeah!! The one picture I'm posting is from last night in Castro Urliales.
No pictures today because of the weather.

  • Liendo to Noja 16 milez

    24 de abril de 2024, España ⋅ ☀️ 48 °F

This turned out to be a very hard day. Two killer mountains gave me one hell of a workout. But the scenery was awesome.
I got to the town of Laredo and took the Ferry across the channel to Sontona. Its was really fun!! Then it was over the second mountain of the day and it was really hard. But I made it. Tomorrow it's on to Guemes and the most famous Albergue on the Camino.Leer más

  • Noja to Guemes. 10 miles.

    25 de abril de 2024, España ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

Today was an easy day with only one high hill to cross. I finished in Guemes. At Guemes is, they say, the best Albergue in any Camino, the "Cabana Del Abuedo Puedo."
I got there early and they fed me a huge early supper. Tonight we'll have a communal dinner and then they'll give us breakfast in the morning. And it all on donation basis. Unbelievable.
This morning I walked with my Camino friend Vicki from Australia. She's good walking company.
Tomorrow it's on to Santander the to Santillana Del Mar. Both town are suppose to be beautiful.

    28 de abril de 2024, España ⋅ ☀️ 43 °F

    2 de mayo de 2024, España ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Beautiful hike along the ocean. I said hello to a lot of cows🤠🤠.
I just had the best dinner that I've had along the Del Norte. It started with a great mixed salad. Then I had fish that was wonderful.
I've noticed that my legs are tired and heavier. It's might be time for a rest day soon. They have taken me nearly 6 hours today.

  • Colunga to Vallaviciosa 12 miles 4.5 hou

    3 de mayo de 2024, España ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Oh my God did I make a mistake today. I arrived at my Albergue early so I had to wait to check in. So, I thought I'd just go to the closest bar, have a beer, and wait for the check in time.
I went to this bar to find out that the town I'm in is the center of Spains Cider industry. And the locals at this bar wouldn’t let me leave until I tasted all their Ciders , it took 3 hours. My god, I could hardly walk. Thank god my Albergue was next door🤠🤠. Today was an easy walk but tomorrow I climb 3000 feet and walk 18 miles. So I'm resting my legs. Today I had the good fortune of walking with this young man from Germany. He was walking with his dog. Turns he was from the town, Ulm, where I was stationed at for over 3 years while I was in the Army. Small world.Leer más

Not a nice day. I started out walking today in pouring rain. It was pretty miserable. After a while I had enough of it. So I jumped on a bus and rode the 11 miles to my next stop. The ride was warm and wonderful. The next 10 days suppose to be clear and sunny. So. I should be able to have some great walking days.Leer más

I learned today that short doesn't equate to easy. The 10 miles I did today was really kinda hard with the up and down of mountains. But the scenery was fantastic. I passed close and far ocean vistas snd well as mountains scenes. The walk offered the whole array of beautiful views and sensory. . I'm a lucky man. Next week I'll be entering Galicia.
This adventure is just flying by.
