• Ibiza Tour-de-Scooter (day 2)

    June 17, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We had a much earlier start to our day of exploring the east side of Ibiza. Our main challenge was technology; trying to force google maps on to the side roads with various way points. Using our new Cardo heads sets we can talk and listen to music along the way, again, more technology challenges to get things to respond correctly 🙃 We succeeded!

We had a quick stop in Cala Llonga for a coffee at MOOS cafe where one of the local cats was soliciting for food, exactly on the door threshold. Onwards to Sant Carles where the weekly Hippy Market was in full swing.

We found a lot of fun narrow and winding roads to navigate along the coastal routes.

When we were about to stop for fuel, I kept feeling something biting his leg. We pulled over, and shook out the shorts, but nothing. Five minutes later while fueling up, I shook out the shorts because it was still bothering me. Alas! A grasshopper fell out 🦗😱. That's not usually the type of action people get in their pants when on the island or Ibiza 🏝️🤣

We finally turned to the hotel room to freshen up before taking the moto (scooter) to Sant Antoni for dinner, and to experience the famous Ibiza sunset 🌅👀 Our dive master, Vidal, recommended
Restaurante Golden Buddha, which had perfect energy for us. Service was quick and the food was the best! We had an evening stroll along the sea wall before motoing home across the island.

  • Ibiza Tour-de-Scooter (day 1)

    June 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Decided it was time to get out and explore more of the island, so rented a scooter from a shop down the street. The proprietor was a bit leary at first to rent to to us as he's had issues with non-European tourists crashing. Luckily we had the International Driver's Permit which to put him at ease.

He provided a map with suggested routes and stops on the way. Two days: exploring the west side one day, and the east side the next.

On the road we went with our first stop in Sant Josep. Then onwards through twisting and windy roads through the western country side. Had a brief stop to enjoy a chilled beverage at Cala Bossa Beach Club near Sant Antoni. It is absolutely huge, stretching the entire bay!

We finally returned, a bit exhausted around 9 pm. Probably covered 100km+!

  • PADI AOW & Nitrox certified

    June 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We had a fantastic three days of diving with Centro de Buceo SCUBA IBIZA Diving Center. They have wonderful staff and a well-oiled setup. J's instructor, Vidal, was a lot of fun. He was impressed with how comfortable J was in the water with such a long break from diving. PADI has online studying which is done before arriving at the drive shop. J did two courses, Advanced Open Water (AOW) and Enriched Air (Nitrox). I completed my Nitrox.

Dive sites were close by and only about 10 minutes boat ride. There were not many drivers, so it almost felt like a private charter! The weather was fantastic with very calm water.

The sea life was awesome! We spotted many things: octopus, nudibranchs, many mediterranean moray (MURAENA HELENA), fishes, barracudas, slipper lobster, rock fishes, and more!

  • Poolside performance 💃🤹💫

    June 14, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Another great cycle over for SCUBA. We decided to skip today's run and not tire ourselves out before the third and final day tomorrow. Instead we ventured over to the larger pool at our hotel, Vibra Lux Mar, for a late afternoon swim without the sizzling UV rays. To our surprise there was a duo doing a dance and acrobat performance! Very impressive for a free poolside show!

Dinner at Booo Burger. Mmm good!

Today was our first day of three at the Ibiza Marina for some SCUBA diving! I joined the local bike share to make the venture across town faster and quicker.

After day one of diving we still had lots of energy and decided to do our training run. This time we discovered a better route along the beach.Read more

  • Dalt Villa (old town Ibiza)

    June 12, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Exploring the city today. Our initial errand of purchasing a Vodafone SIM was postponed as their store was out of stock!! No other stores seem to sell them.

A walk through part of Dalt Villa, this time during daylight. I enjoyed the smaller crowds. Then a longer walk down to Ushuaïa Ibiza
(/uːˈswaɪ.ə/) to see if they crank the tunes loud enough to enjoy on the beach (without paying entry) 🤗 It was a mildly enjoyable experience at 7pm. They are an earlier club (5-11pm), so by 8pm the lineup was pretty impressive.

**in the plane video, watch woman in lower right doing some weird yoga squat action. 😂

Restaurante Guillemis caught our eye for dinner. Their outdoor seating area back from the street 30', with a garden feel. We shared a Buffalo Burrata salad and the Lamb Shoulder. The bread and olives came with a very garlicy cheese spread 🧄. J thought it was great to walk home after the filling meal.

  • Torre de ses Portes

    June 11, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Sunday run-day! We scoured the net searching for a better place for a trail run. It was a little further south than where we were Friday so we hopped a bus to this beach area. There's a nature park next to this beach, Platja de ses Salines.

The run was fantastic. Afterwards we enjoyed a snack and empanada at the corner store, before taking the return bus home.

The afternoon was lazy, with a bit of studying for our upcoming SCUBA courses. A quick grocery shop later we were enjoying a fresh pasta with veggies pesto and chicken skewers on our ocean view balcony 😋 for dinner.

The little bay in front of the hotel has a couple of yachts anchored. I searched marine tracker to get their info and enjoy a free tour 🤣 thanks to the Internet 🎥

  • Sant Antoni - Pride Beach party

    June 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

It was a lazy start to the day after going to sleep so late. It felt nice to not rush to get our day started. When we did finally get going we enjoyed a stroll along the Platja de ses Figueretes walkway. There were a couple of people on motorized surfboards. Very cool!

We hopped on a local bus to get across island from Ibiza Town to Sant Antoni. It's a very comfortable coach-style bus for the 40min ride (2.1€). We walked around and noticed how much smaller and quieter it is than Ibiza Town.

There was a quiet patio for a cafe on the beach calling our names. We enjoyed a cold beverage and hot sandwich and fries for dinner.

The beach party/show started at 8pm, though very few people were around. The venue area was fenced off from the sidewalk, and no seating or chairs, so we sat outside enjoying the music and people watching the droves of folks. Some passers-by clearly have never been exposed to the concept of Pride, hopefully this helps to educate them 😊

We joined the festivities inside the fence and a cold cervesa in a paper cup! Yup, another first for me! The show was improving and crowd growing slowly. We left on a return bus 🚌before the end, but felt we got enough enjoyment of the free event 🏳️‍🌈

  • Pride kick off

    June 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Delicious dinner near our hotel and then a wander closer to the Port part of town. Many very insistent Hosts for restaurants enticing us to come eat and drink. "Free shots," haha, do we really look like that crowd?

The skinny streets of Carrer de la Mare de Déu, is the gay area. A few places had the music pumping! We found a restaurant near the end, and out of the way a bit, to enjoy some sangrias!

Awake past our usual bed time and into the early hours of Saturday, we went to sleep with a few thousand steps of walking credit on our smart watches 🚶 😴🛌 With thin walls at our hotel, and clubbers retuning at the break of dawn we enjoyed earplugs to ensure a good sleep.

  • Playa de Embossa - Playa des Cavallet

    June 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

It was our weekly training long-day for the half marathon, which is only 3 weeks away! I may have optimistically misread the Alltrails details for this route as suitable for trail running 🙃 It's certainly only a hike! Haha.

It wasn't that hot out at 1pm, so we cabbed to the Hard Rock Hotel (11€), where we could start the "run."

Yes, we were able to run on the beach and then only about 1km of the trail. We resolved ourselves to hike the trail with heavy use of the GPS guidance, as the trail wasn't well marked and there seemed to be mini paths everywhere. J thinks they are created by water run off when it rains.

The heat creaped up on us, but we had lotsa sunscreen, hats and water backpack! Once we finished the trail we decided to run back to our hotel on the roads. It was a nice was to see the hotel area and all the shopping stores.

  • Ibiza arrival

    June 8, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

The 2hr flight from Munich was decent. Even better was the satisfying sight of our checked luggage appearing on the carousel!

Our eSIM worked for the phone and we found our way to the limousine, 'er I mean city bus 🤣. There were only 6 of us on it, so lotsa room, but no champagne! We only had to ride one stop into Porto.

The map guided us on our first snaking-walk through town to our hotel. It was great to stretch out our legs after all the flying. We were surprised to find a long section of gravel road. Our Osprey Transporter bags rose to the occasion with their large wheels!

Check-in was a breeze at the hotel! I was happy we got a top floor unit and ocean view! It's a bit of a budget hotel, but quite comfortable after its recent room renovations/refresh. Our kitchenette will be fantastic. The walls and hallways are a bit ecco-y: earplugs to the rescue for a good night's sleep, 😴 in this party-destination, for us old people🧓!

We found a nearby store for some groceries. Then a light dinner at a Cafetería Artesans. It's menu is quite simple, and was even a bit smaller as they were out of a few items. A family with their kid was dining next to us on the sidewalk patio. I thought that the kid looked very tired,or might be in need of a bathroom. Then it happened, vomit right behind J! Thankfully he had been drinking pineapple juice, so it had that aroma 🍍😂

With only 2hrs of sleep the night before we were early to sleep, no party for us on a Thursday night 🌃😴

  • "Play" dinner deliciousness

    June 6, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Wildfire smoke 😷returned and more intense than yesterday. We did a couple errands by car instead of cycling 🚙

The kids have been consistent with their train track construction during our whole visit. It's quite cute 🚉👷

For dinner we popped into town with R. The first restaurant was fully booked up by a single group, on a Tuesday?!😲

Plan B, was around the corner at Play Food and Wine. It was a scrumptious artistic experience!

  • Cycling Ottawa 🚴

    June 5, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Some wildfire smoke from the north blew in last night, but thankfully it mostly dissipated by early afternoon.

We hopped on our friends bikes and cruised canal and river trails. Of course we had to do a Donut and coffee stop at Suzy Q 🍩☕😋 to fuel up for the ride.

There was an impressive amount of road construction, EVERYWHERE! We were told there are two seasons in Ottawa: winter and road works 🤣.

Dinner was with a friend of J's way back in his Terrace, BC days! We enjoyed the Margarita Monday special.

  • Run a Layover

    June 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Early rise and a drive to ATL airport rental car facility in order to return the Tesla 🚗 It was a quick and painless drop-and-go! Thank goodness 👍Then a Skytrain back to the Domestic Terminal. We parted ways with dad, as he was flying home by himself internationally from the airport.

With our 5hr layover in Boston, I decided to squeeze in a run while J relaxed in the terminal with the bags. There are some walking paths near the airport. It was fun getting out of the terminal in only running gear, a passport and boarding pass!🏃 It was a bit warmer than ideal, but I hugged the shade of trees and unpaved areas to run on.

We enjoyed a late afternoon snack at the Air France lounge thanks to another of our free passes from our credit card. Porter air was a bit late departing. The plane was a bit basic, but comfortable enough. Our travel seat cushions saved sore buns from their plywood seats covered in leather 💺😕. Perhaps that's their motivation to give generous wine pours in real glassware 🍷😋

Arrival in Ottawa was a breeze, including customs. We got picked up by our friends at the airport and enjoyed a short visit before calling it a night 🌃😊

  • Goodbye Birmingham, Hello Atlanta

    June 1, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

After three speedy days on the track, we packed up to leave back to Atlanta. Not an overly adventurous travel day, but we did stop at the Sweetwater State Park to stretch our legs. We hiked along the creek to the Manchester Mill Ruins that the Union forces burnt during the civil war.

After the hike we enjoyed a picnic under the forest canopy. The shade was a nice reprieve from the intense sun rays.

Once back in Atlanta, and checked into our hotel room in Midtown, we went for dinner at a Greek restaurant. Food was fine, but definitely not what I'd say was authentic Greek; not enough Lamb on the menu.

After dinner we had a short walk to the Fox Theatre to watch the musical Hairspray!

While waiting to take our seats we explored the amazingly guilded interior of the theatre with a glass of prosecco in hand; felt like we we in a dessert palace.

  • 🏍️ California Superbike School 🏍️

    May 31, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

We had the most amazing three days (Level 1, 2 and 3) zooming motorcycles around this impressive race track! California Superbike School has been around decades and they have perfected a world class experience. Every detail is planned out and they offer to handle anything unexpected too.

Our instructors and coaches are passionate. Classroom sessions, 20 minute track times, coach feedback, video recording bike, video from instructor following you, great food, ... and great riders all focused on allowing each person to improve their riding! I believe we travelled the furthest of any participants to join 👍😎

The lean bike at 20mph in the parking lot really helped me understand the feeling of leaning it, and my lap times improved . Over three days my fun increased and brain got a bit saturated from digesting a lot of new skills.

A few weeks later we were emailed our lap times. Though speed isn't the ultimate goal, we all made significant improvements while having an amazing experience!

    quickest laps: A 2:01.732, J 2:14.836, D 2:27.071

Today's adventure was the 3-years-in-the-making visit to the World's Largest motorcycle museum, the Barber Vintage Motorcycle!

We arrived right at noon, opening time for a Sunday. Lucky dad joined us today, as he thought of doing it Monday but they're closed for Memorial Day.

We're very happy we learned about the guided tour! It started at 1pm and Alfred shared an amazing amount of history over 4+ hours. Nine folks started the tour but we outlasted them all. We even got access to the restoration garage area in the basement. We left just before closing(6pm).

They did an incredible job building this facility!

    May 27, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Well the hotel room I found wasn't good either. It's sofa bed, not so much a bed. Airbnb helped out and provided a discount code to use due to the cancellation/issue of the last one. Messaging lots of hosts finally scored us one that looked ok.

The charging station around the corner from the hotel was an experience. I realized that it couldn't be used without an adapter which was missing from the Tesla 😔. Thankfully a Supercharger was nearby with a fancy grocery store to wander around during the wait. Fancy donuts too!

The food court we found near the park was ok, and our chosen Mexican food a bit disappointing.
