Seaside and Fort Clatsop

After a long walk through the park at Ft. Stevens, we went to Seaside for a walk through town and lunch. Nice beach town but really cold!
On the way back, we toured Ft. Clatsop, the winter encampment for Lewis and Clark when they reached the mouth of the Columbia River.Read more

Troutdale, OR

After visiting the military museum at Ft. Stevens, we drove to Troutdale as we begin our journey back east. The temperature changed from 52 to 98 in a couple of hours!
Nice birthday dinner at Ristorante Di Pompello, an Italian restaurant in Troutdale.Read more

Kootenai Falls

After two travel days, we arrived tonight in Libby, MT. We stopped in Richland, WA (Horned Rapids RV Resort) and Spokane, WA (North Spokane RV Resort) on the way. Today we hiked to Kootenai Falls and the Swinging Bridge before arriving here. The rushing river and the gorge it carved were beautiful. Zoey loved the hike but was afraid of the swinging bridge.Read more
TravelerAs we moved east we immediately had a change of terrain, rising mountains and deep valleys. Still got and extreme fire danger. Near 100, 11 percent humidity, but we did lose the blowing dust.

Glacier

We finally made it to Glacier National Park !! The West Glacier KOA is one of the nicest parks where we have stayed . After getting settled, we were able to start exploring the area around Lake McDonald. Tonight we ate dinner in the historic Lake McDonald Lodge.Read more

We drove 30 miles up the western side of Glacier Park. Much of our journey was over unpaved, dusty and bumpy roads with sparse tourist traffic. In addition to seeing beautiful sights, the reward for making the trek was buying fresh baked huckleberry bear claws from the bakery at Polebridge Mercantile. In addition to the store built in 1914 is a saloon next door and a BBQ place about 4 miles away. The BBQ was delicious - accompanied by Moose Drool on tap!Read more
TravelerGlacier is a remarkable place. The picture showing the burned trees is from the 2003 fire . The haze is from a new fire in the Kootenai Forest where we were 2 days ago. Temperatures still 90s here 100 + in Billings and humidity about 10 %.

Road to the Sun

Today we rode the iconic Red Bus built in 1936 to the continental divide at Logan Pass. Spectacular views of the glaciers and Logan Falls. The glaciers carved the mountains forming a narrow arete (The Garden Wall) on top -- the backbone of the divide.
Another hot day with temperatures still hot even at the top of the mountain. No need for those wool socks we bought for the trip!Read more

Whitefish and Lake McDonald

Today we drove to Whitefish, MT-- a cute Western town with lots of shops and restaurants. Then back to Glacier National Park to McDonald Lodge from which we took a boat trip on the lake. The classic boat was built in 1938. The perspective of the mountains from lake level was quite different from the view from the Road to the Sun.Read more
TravelerNice day, smoke and haze cleared with a passing front. Lake McDonald is beautiful, 480 feet deep and emerald green from the " Glacial Flour" suspended in it.

Avalanche Creek-Cedars Nature Trail

Today we returned to the park to hike the Cedars Nature Trail at Avalanche Creek. The trail winds along the creek through massive western red cedars and black cottonwood trees-- many soaring over two hundred feet. Beautiful, tranquil walk along the creek.Read more

Yesterday we left our beautiful site at West Glacier KOA and headed south toward Yellowstone. We traveled the first day with Swan Lake on one side of us and the mountains on the other. Stayed at Riverfront RV Park in Garrison, MT. Today we drove to Ennis, MT - Ennis RV Village. Again we are surrounded by mountains. Unfortunately we can see forest fires burning in the distance.Read more
TravelerWest Glacier was a great park. The drive through miles of National Forest was very scenic. Swan lake is a great recreation area for the summer.

Today we started our exploration of Yellowstone National Park. Although the park is very crowded, we were able to enjoy several of the main sights-- the Fountain Paint Pots, the Midway Geyer Basin and,of course, Old Faithful who spouted right on schedule.Read more
TravelerWe were last here just after the 1988 fires so it is interesting to see the recovery of the landscape, especially the lodgepole pines. It is beautiful to witness the geothermal features. Pictures don't really do them justice.

Today we explored some of the beautiful falls in Yellowstone. While driving along the Madison River to Gibbon Falls, we saw a herd of elk grazing in the meadow. The highlight of the day was viewing from Artist Point the spectacular Grand Canyon of Yellowstone with its plunging falls.Read more

Drove back to the park to explore one last time before leaving tomorrow. We went to the Norris Geyser Basin. It is the area of the hottest geysers and today was also our hottest day here! Steamboat Geyser is the largest active geyser but does not spout regularly. Today it gave only a very modest show.Read more

Buffalo Bill Scenic Highway

Today we left Yellowstone by driving through the park from the west gate to the east gate. We had several delays due to bison crossing the road. In order to reach the east gate, we had to cross the Sylvan Pass at 8520 ft. on a narrow road nestled between Avalanche Peak(10566 ft.) and Grizzly Peak(9948 ft.).
After leaving the park, we drove along the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway to Cody. We followed the river surrounded by rugged red rock cliffs.Read more

Nice day in Cody. We visited the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, an amazing museum of Western and Native American history. We also walked through the Irma Hotel and Saloon which Buffalo Bill built and named for his daughter. We ended the day by attending the Cody Rodeo.Read more
TravelerThe Museum was special, 5 in one, Western Art, Natural history, Guns, Indian Culture, sculpture and Raptor Rescue. Saw a terrific raptor show.

Medora, ND

After an overnight stay in Miles City, MT, we drove along the Yellowstone River into the Badlands to Medora, ND. We walked around the historic Western city after getting set up in Red Trails RV Camp. Tonight we feasted on Pitch Fork Fondue. The cooks put sixteen ribeye steaks on the tines of a pitch fork and then stick the fork in a vat of boiling oil! It was actually good with all the fixings. We ate outside on the top of a mountain. After dinner we walked over to the Burning Hills Amphitheater and saw the Medora Musical. It is the tallest outdoor amphitheater in the U.S. the show which has been going on for 60 years was wonderful.Read more
TravelerMiles City was a good waypoint for us and also William Clark and Sacagawea as they camped at that very spot along the Tongue River to first meet with the Creek Indians.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Today we spent the day in Theodore Roosevelt National Park located in heart of the Badlands of North Dakota. In addition to the stark terrain, we saw elk, bison, prairie dogs and wild horses that inhabit the park.Read more

Travel Days

On Thursday we left Medora and traveled across the state of N.D. We stopped at the Painted Canyon on our way out of Medora. We spent the night in Casselton (Gov. RV Park) after driving past fields of alfalfa, wheat and miles of sunflowers.
Yesterday we drove across Minnesota to Hinckley where we stayed in a very nice park at the Grand Casino Resort.
Today we continued our journey to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The open plains turned into North Woods Forests.Read more
TravelerWe crossed the Mississippi river and are really in a very different world, birch and pine forest vs wide open fields. Fog and humidity this morning vs hot and dry. A constant we are reminded of however if the overhang of haze from the western and Canadian wildfires. It was very evident as we watched sunset over Sunday Lake on Saturday night.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Today we drove across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Munising. We took a 2 1/2 hour boat tour of the beautiful Pictured Rocks along Lake Superior. Afterward we ate our first pasties! Interesting.

We spent the last few days on Lake Michigan in and around Petoskey. We had a nice day yesterday in Harbor Springs and today in Charlevoix- both lovely harbor towns on the lake. Our stay at Hearthside Groves RV Resort has been a relaxing respite from our travels. Even Zoey has enjoyed the lush grass and warm sunshine!Read more
TravelerLake Michigan water is clear and blue. Reminds me of the water off Tortola , BVI. Yesterday a strong NW wind showed how rough the lake can be. Fun to see the boats coming in the Charlevoix channel under the draw bridge.

We spent five nights in Nappanee, IN, the home of Newmar. We wanted to take a tour of the factory where our Dutch Star was manufactured. While staying there, we asked if they would fix a few minor warranty issues. They graciously worked us into their schedule while letting us stay in their RV Park. During our stay, we were able to explore the Heritage Trail and the Amish countryside. We loved seeing their farms and beautiful horses and homes.Read more
TravelerNewmar Factory tour was amazing. 3 men can move a 45 ft coach around by pushing it, suspended on air pads. Building 11 coaches a day. Assembly blew me away with virtually all components made in house. Quality is first priority. Happy that we got there and experienced their service too. Techs all came from the floor and had great expertise.

Traveling south, we spent two nights at Safe Harbor RV Resort in Nashville on a spit of land on Percy Priest Lake. We visited our alma mater Vanderbilt and had dinner with a classmate Charlotte Covington. We were surprised at the growth and vibrancy of Nashville. Then on to Alabama with two nights at the Hoover Met RV Park in Birmingham. We celebrated Dick's birthday with a trip to Dreamland for its world famous barbeque!Read more
