Phnom Pen

Le ultime due notti in Cambogia le passo a Phnom Pen, la capitale della Cambogia.
Phnom Pen è una grande città, molto viva e trafficata sia di giorno che di notte.
La città è anche famosa per la brutale storia durante il regime dei Khmer Rouge negli anni ‘70 - qui infatti questo gruppo ha sterminato milioni di innocenti (si dice un quarto della popolazione Cambogiana) dopo la loro presa della città, con l’idea comunista di creare una nazione basata sull agricoltura, dove i ceti medi e superiori e gli intellettuali non erano necessari, quindi dovevako essere rieducati o liquidati.
Poco fuori dalla città si possono vedere i campi di sterminio (io non ci sono stata) così come la S21, ovvero la prigione in centro Phnom Pen con base in una scuola, dove hanno torturato (e ucciso per “errore”) brutalmente tante persone (anche stranieri, come un australiano di passaggio con la barca verso la Cambogia)
Pochi i sopravvissuti, si dice che erano 12. Due sopravvissuti erano presenti a rispondere alle domande dei visitatori.
La visita della S21 è stata molto toccante anche perchè non c’è molta censurazione, infatti si possono vedere anche foto delle torture e le centinaia di faccia dei prigionieri e delle loro guardie. Purtroppo le guardie erano perlopiù ragazzini, dato che sono menti facilmente plasmabili e influenzabili.
È un posto triste ma allo stesso tempo molto interessante, anche perchè sono cose che noi a scuola non abbiamo mai imparato.

Dopo aver visitato questo luogo tragico mi sono avventurata per le strade della città, visitando diversi mercati (quello russo e quello centrale) così come un centro commerciale.
Ho canminato anche lungo il fiume dove la sera tutto si anima con gente che mangia e fa sport e si diverte.

Bella e caotica, a me è piaciuta tantissimo.

Domani, 14.2 si torna in Thailandia con 13 ore di bus!

I spend the last two nights in Cambodia in Phnom Pen, the capital of Cambodia.
Phnom Pen is a large city, very lively and busy both day and night.
The city is also famous for its brutal history during the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s - here this group exterminated millions of innocent people (reportedly a quarter of Cambodia's population) after their communist-led takeover of the city to create a nation based on agriculture, where the middle and upper classes and intellectuals were not needed, therefore they had to be re-educated or liquidated.
Just outside the city you can see the extermination camps (I haven't been there) as well as S21, the prison in the center of Phnom Pen based in a school, where they brutally tortured (and killed by "mistake") many people (even foreigners, like an Australian passing by boat towards Cambodia)
There were few survivors, 12 confirmed. Two survivors were present to answer visitors' questions.
The visit of S21 was very touching also because there is not much censured, in fact you can also see photos of the torture and the hundreds of faces of the prisoners and their guards. Unfortunately the guards were mostly kids, since they are minds that are easily molded and influenced.
It is a sad place but at the same time very interesting, also because these are things that we never learned at school.

After visiting this tragic place I ventured through the streets of the city, visiting several markets (the Russian one and the central one) as well as a shopping center.
I also walked along the river where in the evening everything comes alive with people eating, playing sports and having fun.

Beautiful and chaotic, I loved it.
