  • Purley London UK

    28. heinäkuuta 2019, Englanti ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Today we attended Oak Hall Church near Purley where we are staying. This church has just moved into a new multi purpose building which also has three apartments on the top story for it's staff. In the afternoon we walked around the paddocks near Andrew and Jenny's house, enjoyed the summer flowers and found or all about the "chalk downs" which this part of England is famous for. We also walked on the old Roman road which was the main road London to Brighton. Andrew and Jenny's house is right on the paddocks where this ancient road is located.Lue lisää

  • London Greenwich

    30. heinäkuuta 2019, Englanti ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Greenwich has much to see do. The Observatory and meridian line with it's history of clocks and navigation, the fan museum, the Maritime museum with it's rich history of boat building, trade and naval conquest. I was fascinated by the story of Harrison who took up the challenge to build a gimble clock that would work at sea and solve the perennial problem of longitude. He was never recognised for his ground breaking inventions and they are in display at Greenwich. The maritime museum is amazing with a great display of memorabilia around battles like Trafalgar, Canon balls embedded inpic pieces of wood, Lord Nelsons uniform and even a price of the flag from his ship! The Cutty Sark sits above ground and you can tour it's underside!Lue lisää

  • Bath

    3. elokuuta 2019, Englanti ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Today's destination is the ancient Roman city of Bath. What surprised us was the natural beauty of the city with it's wide streets, well developed fauna and trees throughout the city. We decided to do our own walking tour around the city (a saving of 14 pounds on HOHO bus). The city is compact enough to walk around grab a map and a tourist guide and off you go. The city cathedral is stunning. The circus and circle streets with their three story houses is impressive. We visited Jane Austin's house and the home of the Sally Lun!Lue lisää

  • Oxford

    4. elokuuta 2019, Englanti ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Our last city visited is Oxford with it's magnificent universities and colleges of learning. We did another walking tour around the city then headed out for a brief recce of Blenheim Palace. A great day for our final adventure in England. It's hard to believe our European adventure has come to an end. But we are ready for home. Thanks to Mel and Val Newth for three great days together.
Thanks also to Andrew and Jenny Hubbard for a home away from home in UK again. Perhaps most thanks goes to our great friends David and Lyn McChesney without whom this adventure would probably not have taken place...and with whom we have many many endearing travel buddy memories!
