  • Zadar- Road Trip!

    July 2, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

We rented a car and took a drive north to another coastal town. The town is interesting as it has the same things that Dubrovnik and Split have, city walls, Roman ruins, a port, walkable streets and shops, what it doesn’t have is a million tourists packed in. The town felt manageable and comfortable. Ocean breezes cooled the air which made it extra nice. I’m glad we ventured out of Split. This country amazes with every turn.

Zadar old town is built on an isthmus it is surrounded by water on three sides. In 2006, the city commissioned an art installation that utilizes the waves and the connection to the sea. A series of pipes of varying lengths and diameters extend into the water from some steps. As the waves hit the pipes a vent in the sidewalk emits a sound. The effect is little like blowing over a coke bottle. Both eerie and soothing at the same time. It was a unique find. Although the video sound isn’t good, the tones that sound like a steel drum are the sounds from the pipes.

    Wikipedia
Zadar, a city on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, is known for the Roman and Venetian ruins of its peninsular Old Town. There are several Venetian gates in the city walls. Surrounding the Roman-era Forum is 11th-century St. Mary’s Convent, with religious art dating to the 8th century. There’s also the grand, 12th-century St. Anastasia’s Cathedral and the round, 9th-century pre-Romanesque Church of St. Donatus.

  • Polaris, sail, swim & explore

    July 4, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Today we sail! The trip was across the Split straight and visit two islands.
The first stop was a secluded bay where we all swam for 3 hours.
Lunch was served while sailing to our next port. The meal was 3 course sit down table service on china that was equal to any restaurant we have been to in Split. I had the grilled tuna steak, Pam had the grilled chicken.
The second stop was the tiny port town of Stomorska. It took Pam about 10 minutes to walk around the entire port while also checking out all the stores, bars and Yachts. I ended up at a beach on the south end, Pam ended up at a beach on the north end of the port.
The boat had been repurposed to its current use. Originally built as a tug boat it saw service at Normandy in World War 2, which added a bit of historical significance to the trip.

  • Best restaurant in Split

    July 7, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ 🌙 79 °F

GRILL CLUB MAESTRO was the best!
After 4 weeks eating our way around Split. The food at most all of the restaurants was fine, it just was not that memorable. The seafood was fresh, we know it was because there was a display of assorted fish on ice at the entrance.

The restaurant was a 5 minute walk from our apartment. Located on a bluff with the ocean on three sides we dined under the tree canopy with live music playing softly in the background. Very romantic!
Great selection of grilled meat, fish and pasta. We were also impressed with all of the side dishes.
This is the only restaurant we went back to a second time.

  • Train Split to Zagreb

    July 9, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Bye bye Split! We departed at 8:30am, arriving in the Croatian capital city of Zagreb at 4:00pm.
Beautiful country along the whole trip. Mountains valleys and thick forests alongside. However the train is very very slow. The track has just not yet been upgraded for even moderate speeds. Many train stations along the route have abandoned buildings and others showed bullet damage from the 1995 war.Read more

  • Croatia - Goodbye

    July 9, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

    Croatia
You can have an ashtray but not a glass of tap water.
Loads of ferries to the islands and you should take them all.
In the summer months there could be 2 cruise ships a day off loading 5,000 or more people a day.
    July is hot!!
June can be rainy and when it rains it’s in buckets.
All of the water is really clear.
The beaches have a gradual slope so you can walk in to the water for yards and still not have it higher than your thighs.
There aren’t any waves in the ocean it’s like a beach on a lake.
Everyone goes to the beach. It’s a social meeting place for absolutely all ages
Eating out is expensive. We typically paid €50 for dinner.
There are a lot of condoned building that are falling down. Most are abandoned from the communist era; the rest from new construction that went bankrupt. Most of the occupied buildings have no maintenance to landscape or exterior. Chipped plaster and pealing paint are everywhere.
Dinnertime is after 8:00pm and club times start at 11:00 and end around 4:00am
There are many ruins of Venetian and Roman era.

  • Sticky Candy

    October 1, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

I found Sticky Candy on YouTube and marked it on my Google map as a place to visit if ever I was in Sydney. That time finally came and I was giddy (and it wasn’t from the massive amount of sugar involved).

Sticky candy shop makes Rock candy. Which is the kind with words or shapes inside it. Their YouTube channel is basically a camera and commentary as they color, pull, stack, and finally chop up, their candy delights.

I liked watching it on my laptop and it was even better watching it in person.
