Split - Yr 1. HM 4

We rented a car and took a drive north to another coastal town. The town is interesting as it has the same things that Dubrovnik and Split have, city walls, Roman ruins, a port, walkable streets and shops, what it doesn’t have is a million tourists packed in. The town felt manageable and comfortable. Ocean breezes cooled the air which made it extra nice. I’m glad we ventured out of Split. This country amazes with every turn.

Zadar old town is built on an isthmus it is surrounded by water on three sides. In 2006, the city commissioned an art installation that utilizes the waves and the connection to the sea. A series of pipes of varying lengths and diameters extend into the water from some steps. As the waves hit the pipes a vent in the sidewalk emits a sound. The effect is little like blowing over a coke bottle. Both eerie and soothing at the same time. It was a unique find. Although the video sound isn’t good, the tones that sound like a steel drum are the sounds from the pipes.

Zadar, a city on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, is known for the Roman and Venetian ruins of its peninsular Old Town. There are several Venetian gates in the city walls.
