TravelerOoga-ooga - the name of the monster type being created in many guises by each village. It takes quite a while to make (involving the whole village) and is then carried through the streets in a parade on the last day of the Balinese year. All the oogas are taken to the cemetery at the end of the day and burned - symbolism of cleaning the area of bad spirits for the start of the new year (Nyepi) which starts the next day as a day of silence - no work, no shops, no going out AT ALL. Happy Birthday Mark (57)

Started with Mark's birthday. Ponjok Batu is a sacred Hindu temple close to where we stay in Tejaklua. We lucked on to a ceremony involving 4 villages. Very special. Then, to Mempah waterfall not far away. Some of us braved the slippery stones, the noise, and the cool water. Then return to our Salt farm hotel for an afternoon by the pool.Read more

Nyepi. Bali New Year

Arrived into Pemuteran yesterday. Bali tradition of Ogoh Ogoh the night before Nyepi, Bali New Year. The villages prepare demons for months and parade them in the street before burning the demons and all the bad energy that goes with them. Today is Nyepi - silent day. The entire island of Bali is quite. Very very silent. Day of reflection and no one can make a noise, everyone stays at home. No traffic, even the airport is closed. Mark Tony and Sue learn to play Qwirkle unable to leave the compound. We live this till 6am tomorrow.Read more

Left the beach and snorkelling behind at Pemuteran and headed to the mountains. Munduk, 800mtrs above sea level. Cool mointain air. A short walk to explore the neighbourhood.
Aaahhh, wonderful! Countryside looks gorgeous and a stunning waterlily bloom. Here its sweltering and we frying in temps of 33-34 degrees and no rain. At least I have a pool to cool down in! Enjoy the last few days of your trip and thanks so much fr sharing!!! [Gerhard]

The rain and clouds ⛅️ have set in. But we still ventured out - not the 3hr jungle walk we planned.

TravelerLuwak. A palm civet. They are native to Bali. Not usually domesticated. This is the animal that eats the coffee beans and then poos them out, and then they make the coffee. Luwak coffee is the most expensive coffee in the world.

Under the sea is far more beautiful than the photos posted here. There is no underwater camera on this trip. Visibility is excellent. Fish in abundance, hard and soft coral. No Manta rays to be seen today, but there was a turtle and dolphins.Read more

The end of our trip

Traveler WOW! What a way to end a super holiday! In my more than 320plus dives I have never seen a manta ray, sharks, whale shark and most of the rest but no mantas. Thanks for sharing. G
