    Day 6

    After a week of long tours, we took the day off to explore a bit of Shinjuku before heading to the Ghibli Museum and then to a traditional Japanese houseboat for dinner. It started raining almost immediately, so we were lucky to be mostly inside.

    We took a cab to Mikata to visit the museum and it was magical! The rain added to the cozy atmosphere of the whimsical building designed by Miyazaki himself. Totoro greeted us at the entrance and inside was an amazing trip through film history and so many of the movies we love. We are so glad we managed to get tickets - it was an unforgettable experience!

    Afterwards, we braved the rain to hail a cab to the pier, where we boarded a traditional Japanese houseboat for sukiyaki and an evening of music. It was lovely, if a bit cold and lacking in vegetarian options.    もっと詳しく

    Day 7

    I woke up with a cold this morning, but luckily we had very little to do. Our first and only stop was at Tokyo Station to catch the Shinkansen to Kyoto. Once there, we checked into the hotel, and then Richard and Mom went out to grab dinner and explore.

    There’s a vegan Japanese restaurant near the hotel, so they picked up a bento for me before heading to a teppanyaki restaurant for their own dinner. Richard was particularly excited about the unlimited Whisky Sours from a tap on the table, and came back to the hotel very happy and full of liquor and grilled food.    もっと詳しく

    Day 8

    Lindley was sick today so Richard is here and I'm taking over writing! :D In the morning mom and me went to the traditional area of Arashiyama in Kyoto. We walked through the bamboo forest. At the entrance they had some street food and I grabbed some skewers and a delicious curry bread (this entire entry will be food reviews :D).

    Then we drove up to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine where all the cows wore bibs. They had a breathtaking garden with blossoming cherry and plum trees. There was also a little area with samurai swords and armor and I wanted to take one so bad.

    Apparently Kyoto has 1700 shrines and 700 temples, so we couldn't go see them all.

    Next we went to Kinkaku-ji, a buddhist temple thatw as burned down by a crazy monk and was rebuilt with a golden house with a badass chicken on top.

    After that we went to Kiyamizu-dera Temple, which translates to 'Instagram city'. So many people and couples were posing for selfies in kimonos. The temple itself was on 13 meter high stilts. The legend says if you jump down and survive you will get your wish fulfilled. I did it and it went great; highly recommend!
    Going down from the temple was a cool shopping street with food and cool trinkets and the snoopy chocolate cafe!

    Fusihmi Inari-taishi shrine was the foxiest shrine ever! Since Lindley loves these beanpaste munching dog-cats, I had to get some foxy souvenirs here!    もっと詳しく

    Day 9

    It was a rainy day in Kyoto, but luckily we didn’t have much to do outside. We started our day at the Toei Studio Park - which was amazing! We even got to “get in the robot, Shinji!” There was also a very kitschy haunted house that made mom scream a few times, as well as sets with recreations of buildings from
    different time periods in Japan. We finally went to see a samurai show before heading out to our cooking class later in the day.

    Luckily we skipped lunch, because we cooked A LOT of food! 2 types of ramen, an onigiri each, and gyoza! It was an amazing feast and we will definitely be trying the recipes again at home!    もっと詳しく
