    ZooAmerica

This was cool and sad all at the same time.

The cages are small - but the animals would have been destroyed if not for this place.

It’s been here since 1910 when someone gave Milton Hershey some prairie dogs and a brown bear.

Oh, wow. Are we speaking of the same Hershey of the Hershey empire? If so, I don't understand why those tiny enclosures and cages can't be updated to sizes more appropriate for the animals who live in them.

Yes, it’s Milton Hershey from the Hershey chocolate company. The zoo has been there since 1910. It’s just a small section of the park. They don’t even charge extra to get into it. They see they do lots of things to help stimulate the animals - like food, puzzles, and toys and stuff. They have trainers on site that love the animals and do their best for them with what they have. But they’re all animals that would have been put down if they weren’t there so I’m not sure what’s better and we can’t ask the animals.

    Case Mountain Hike

Not sure why all our hikes have to have the word “mountain” in them - but in all honesty, this was an easy stroll. We saw the case cabin - which is literally you are walking through the woods and all the sudden there’s a huge cabin from 1917 built out of Cherrywood. It’s right on the pond.
Very happy Curt could join us. And Denise was the only one that left with an icky Ticky.

    Tick count:

    Denise 1
    Kris 0 😉

What’s better than all your childhood favorites?!?

Denise’s sister (Deb) and best BiL ever (Greg) got her Italian Butter Cookies and a cake from an Italian bakery (I think from Montilio’s). It was amazing.

I actually just found out that this bakery is where JFK purchased his wedding cake from. I can tell why.

    Smoke and fire

While waiting for Curt and Linda to arrive, Denise, Julie and I noticed the multitude of fire trucks flying down mile road (to Wells beach) and then we saw a plume of smoke. For hours (and I do mean hours) the emergency services came.
We found out next day that a gas grill propane tank exploded in the basement of the house.
The entire house was a loss - major damage to the two next door
After crews completed their job - next day - we drove by.

    Perkins Cove Drawbridge

    Cool History:
The drawbridge at Perkins Cove is one of those places that feels like old Maine.
The first footbridge went up in 1890 (so people could cross the cove), but when the harbor was dredged in the early 1940s to handle larger fishing boats, the bridge was rebuilt as a drawbridge.
It is the only wooden double-leaf draw footbridge in the United States.
We actually had a lot of fun walking around, but the drawbridge was definitely the highlight (My favorite part was when my sister was standing on some recently replaced boards - and I told her it was a trap door and she was gonna fall hahahahaha)

    Nubble Lighthouse

Pretty sure this is the most photographed lighthouse in Maine. Notice the gondola? That would be how the light keeper gets back-and-forth because the lighthouse sits on a small island.
There’s a woman who was born on the island who passed away a some years ago. Apparently there was a huge storm on the night her mother went into labor. They couldn’t Risk getting her off the island.
The other thing I found interesting/gross was all the white on the rock with all the birds on it.

    Penobscot Bridge

The Penobscot Narrows Bridge was built in 2006. They needed to replace the to replace Waldo-Hancock Bridge (which was unfixable) and they had to lower the weight limit on the Waldo bridge because it was in such bad shape so they had to build this sucker in a hurry. It usually takes 10 years, took them three

What makes it special is the observatory perched 420 feet up inside one of the bridge towers. You ride an elevator to the top (fast) and get a sweeping 360-degree view of the Penobscot River, Penobscot Bay, Fort Knox, and lots of mountains.

It’s the first bridge observatory built in the United States and one of only a handful in the world, making it one of Maine’s most unique attractions.

A neat detail: the twin towers were designed to resemble the Washington Monument because granite from nearby Mount Waldo was used in the monument’s construction. The bridge also incorporates granite throughout its design

    Fort Knox at Penobscot Bay

Even though our van broke down, this was by far one of my favorite things we saw.

The fort was built during tensions with British Canada over the Maine boundary dispute - and since the British had invaded that River before, this fort was built.

I think it’s the only fork built out of granite - so it is remarkably well preserved
We had so much fun, running through the hallways and tunnels

    Hot shot Furnace

This was at Fort Knox and I found it fascinating

You start a fire in the bottom of the building, you load cannon balls into one end of it. They roll through the fire and once they’ve been in there 20 or 30 minutes, you open the door and pull out a red hot cannonball fire it at the enemy ship, and it catches their ship on fire

Here’s what’s interesting - Fort Knox was built in pieces due to monetary constraints. They built this before they actually got their cannons in. By the time they got the cannons ships weren’t wooden anymore. They were metal and the cannon balls that would have fit. This building were no longer being used. They were using bigger cannons to take down the iron clad ships. So although this was built, it was never used.

    Campground fun

In Bar Harbor, our campground was on the water and made for some beautiful sunsets

We sat by the fire, Denise made a wonderful meal, and yes, we actually did jump on the bounce pad - it was amazing fun but no videos will be surfacing lol.

Midnight loved the big dog park.

We tried blueberry everything lol that’s a picture of a blueberry margarita.

Lots of cards - And we had so much fun we tuckered poor Curtis out.

    Jordan Pond House

We did stop at the Jordan Pond House for popovers, (two days in a row because the first day there was absolutely no parking) - apparently that is what you do when you’re there.
We sat out on the lawn, which was lovely, but the part that got me was the history of it. They’ve been serving tea and popovers there since the 1800s.

It felt strange to sit in a place where people and families (and past presidents) from a hundred years ago had all sat before us, looking at the same pond and eating the same kind of food.

Midnight, enjoyed the view and even got a small piece of pop over herself.

    Stonington Maine

We loved Stonington. It was a quaint little town, and there was a museum there that was closed, but the guy came out and started talking to us, and when we told him we were leaving the next day, he brought us in and gave us a personal tour. It was awesome.

One of the most amazing things we saw was a lobster split almost perfectly down the middle—one color on one side and a completely different color on the other. these “split” lobsters occur only about once in every fifty million. Some even turn out to be half male and half female, making them one of the rarest sights in the ocean - and we got to hold one.
