Day 24 - Lightning Ridge (Pt 1)

Just for something different…….an awesome morning.

We did bacon and egg toasties in the camp kitchen, which were superb.

The literature for and the subsequent tourist attractions in Lightning Ridge are amazing. There is so much to see and do.

That being said Karen had done her homework and was keen on doing the “Chamber of the Black Hand”. It was part of the “Yellow car door tour”, a perfect way to present local highlights. You get in your car and literally drive to the next car door sign. The last stop was Stanley the Emu, an 18 metre steel sculpture constructed out of a vw beetle and a satellite dish amongst other things.

Back to the “ Chamber”. This place blew us away. I had no idea what it was. We booked tickets and waited in a shed. Then……down 115 or so steps we went…..about 40 feet. An underground cavern of unbelievable sculptures carved into the rock face. The pictures do not do it justice. There were sections each taking on a different theme. Music, Star Wars, famous people…..et al. The sculpture of Bassendeans once famous son is particularly funny (it’s amongst the many photos I took).

Back at the park now and Gail, Peter, Karen and myself decided a visit to the artesian bath was the go, they walked the 200m while I decided it was about time I got on the bike. I met them there. Wow… a circular pool about 10 m in diameter with water at around 40 degrees. It was ever so soothing.

Back to the park again just in time to get ready for the nightly comedy duo of Mel and Susie. They were brilliant. Apparently they do a different show each night. But given they are dealing with grey nomads it could simply be that each person visiting their show has alzheimers and has forgotten what was on the night before.

We all booked a Devonshire tea with these ladies on Thursday. You’ll have to wait til Thursdays update to find out what went down
