Day 44 - Agnes Water to Rainbow Beach
Sep 7–9 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C
I can finally say the morning wasn’t picturesque perfect. Whilst our sense of sight was impacted given It was quite overcast and even looked like it was going to rain, our sense of hearing was still jumping with joy at the abundance of birdlife awakening world
But rewind prior to sunrise for a change. Just after midnight Gail captured video evidence of a thief outside our van. A Trichosurus vulpecula (commonly known as a Brushtail
possum) had decided our food supplies were open game. Resting bread rolls had disappeared and ripening avocados were attacked. For once I was “silently” sound asleep so I copped the wrath of not being the defender of our castle.
A few hours later at around 3am my early morning visit to the ablution was shared with a rather sizeable arachnid. I thought quietly to myself I am so glad this wasn’t Peter. Whilst I’m no fan of this species, if it had been Peter, the valley would have been alive with the sound of fear.
Pack up time, but not before morning coffee and tea and toast and Vegemite.
Departure was a little trickier than normal given the bush themed environment. Engaging 4WD to exit our accommodation has been extremely rare.
Pretty uneventful drive once again albeit it was probably one of our longest. We did encounter a somewhat rude truckie. We are very cognisant of being 4 vans together and not necessarily always at the maximum speed limit. We communicate with the commanders of these road beasts on Channel 40.
Today, one of those commanders decided he wasn’t happy with us. As we approached an overtaking lane Peter (tail end Charlie) advised this charming gentleman we would slow down and bunch up so he could pass.
Well, he went to town on us. “Why don’t you pull over and have a cuppa” and “sitting on 75 since the last town” (there were a few other choice adjectives I won’t poison you with)……which was a complete and utter untruth as we were averaging around 95 (the limit is 100 in QLD). Not sure whether it was sarcastic or embarrassment but as he flew by he broadcast over the airwaves was “have a nice day”.
For lunch we stopped at an historic town called Childers, unfortunately made famous by the backpack hostel disaster in 2000.

We arrived at the Big 4 Rainbow Beach mid afternoon. It’s a huge park right on Pelican Bay.
NOT. HAPPY. JAN. The 4 bays we had been allocated, which were of course the closet to the waters edge and irrefutably ours as confirmed via electronic means, were no longer available. And, no doubt this establishment will forward the obligatory hyperlink for our post visit review. Wait till our fingers hit the keyboard on this one 🤬
Sunset was amazing as the photos portray.
Crumbed chicken and veges in the camp kitchen for dinner then an early night.Read more
