• Day 45 - Rainbow Beach

    September 8 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Back to a beautiful morning. It’s so hard to take.

Bacon and eggs in the camp kitchen then into Rainbow Beach proper. Filled the chariots then had a sticky beak around town.

We stumbled onto a “wall of shame”. Right there in the Main Street. A wall full of photographs of chariots stuck, water lapping over bonnets, sand half way up doors. People who failed to understand mother natures power. People who thought they were invincible. We found a similar feature in the pub later in the evening.

The beach is a way of life for so many people over here. To make use of it you need to purchase a pass, which of course we did.

Took the chariots onto the beach heading south. Very picturesque at the bottom of the sands responsible for the name of the town.

As the photos and videos portray the steep cliffs at the beach were very impressive, but also a concern. Sand and rocks flow and tumble downward much the same as a river would at the end of its journey across vast lands.

Spent a bit of time at the beach where of course our canine companions enjoyed running amok once again.

Back into town for a bite to eat before heading to Inskip point. Inskip point is where vehicles (both car and van) navigate the soft sand to get to a barge that takes them the 1.2 kms to K’Gari (aka Fraser) island.

There are a number of YouTube videos depicting many unsuccessful attempts to navigate the transition from gravel to sand at this point. It’s almost a sport watching the carnage.

Back to the vans to freshen up before hitting the town for a pub meal.
