Over the top of Varanger

Day 3 of the journey and the start of decade 3 for Angela. There are very few places better to spend a birthday! Waking up to a beautiful sunny day in the most stunning bay we have been in yet, coffee in the sunshine, crystal clear water, no wind…

We considered staying here another day, we would have loved to spend some time exploring the Varanger Peninsula, however, our weather window wasn’t going to last forever and it isn’t the kind of coast we want to be caught out in. So with the wind picking up to a lovely sailing breeze, we moved on. Upwind sailing, which while usually is a drag, is actually quite lovely in our little yacht - she cruises upwind like a dream!

Our spot for the evening was Berlevåg, a cute little fishing village with some impressive sea walls, apparently needing several attempts to get them right so the Barents Sea didn’t just sweep them away!

We read in the cruising guide we have that Berlevåg has a guest dock for visiting boats. On arrival however, we were told that no, it’s not a guest dock, and no they don’t get so many visitors…Luckily the man we met was lovely, and offered for us to stay for free on his fathers dock.Read more
