We lunched at 1238 The Battle of Iceland and then failed to resist visiting the exhibition of this famous Icelandic battle. The exhibition was fun, mainly because of a virtual reality battle. Turns out I'm not great at throwing spears!

Glaumbaer was a historic farm with turf covered farm buildings which you could explore to see how Icelanders lived 150 years ago. We then went to Reyjafoss and Fosslaug - a waterfall next to a natural hot spring pool by a river. Evening was disco night in our guesthouse.

  • Seals

    19 de agosto de 2022, Islândia ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

We were sad to leave the hotel at the end of the world, particularly after getting hot waffles for breakfast. We travelled south and west today, stopping off to explore Borgarvirki - a fort made from a volcanic crater plug. We had a buffet lunch above the Icelandic seal center. The seal center's most entertaining exhibit was a slightly surreal video from the 1980s, featuring cute film of baby seals, then a rat eating a skinned seal, then a naked woman coming out from behind a rock. Apparently a local folk story of the seal woman.Leia mais

Everywhere in Iceland has a swimming pool. Even the smallest village usually manages at least an outdoor pool, hot tub and sauna. We went to the pool in Borganes, and threw a ball about. The view from Borgaarnes was impressive, as was the beer.Leia mais

  • Into a glacier

    20 de agosto de 2022, Islândia ⋅ ❄️ 0 °C

This morning we took a trip into a glacier. A man made tunnel takes you (with crampons on) 40 metres below the surface of the ice. Getting there in the specially converted missile launcher was an experience in itself. We drove past signs showing where the glacier had been every 10 years.Leia mais

  • Lava cave

    20 de agosto de 2022, Islândia ⋅ 🌧 5 °C

Our underground exploration continued with a visit to The Cage Vidgelmir - Icelands largest known lava cave. Very different to UK caves, with chocolate brown walls and tiny one off stalactites and mites. And a guide from Birmingham.

After an early evening beer, we took in the impressive view from the top of Borganes water tower, then headed back for a final dinner at Hotel Varmaland.

  • Lagoon

    21 de agosto de 2022, Islândia ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

Our final day in Iceland. Beautiful sunshine for our drive back to Reykavik, and we finished the holiday with a dip in the Blue Lagoon (which whilst filled with waste water from the nearby geothermal power station, looks amazing. Steam hovers over the water, and the pool is huge. Mud facials and smoothies from the lagoon side bar. Goodbye Iceland - its been a great two weeks!Leia mais
