Fountains Abbey

Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England. Founded in 1132, the abbey operated for 407 years, becoming one of the wealthiest monasteries in England until its dissolution, by order of Henry VIII, in 1539.
In the 18th century a designed landscape of exceptional beauty was created around the ruins of the Abbey. The spectacular ruins of the 12th century abbey and water mill, the Jacobean mansion of Fountains Hall, the Victorian masterpiece St Mary’s Church and one of the most magnificent Georgian water gardens ever created, make this a landscape of outstanding beauty.Lue lisää

Mother Shipton, the Viaduct, a Castle and a Wasp!

Knaresborough is full of surprises, a warren of medieval streets and stone staircases that weave their way up and down the hill. The town centre is perched on the cliffs above the River Nidd and the imposing railway viaduct across the Nidd Gorge is magnificent (I love viaducts)!
Enjoyed a lovely walk to Mother Shipton's Cave and the Petrifying Well - Mother Shipton is England's most famous Prophetess. She foretold the fates of several rulers within and just after her lifetime, as well as the invention of iron ships, the Great Fire of London in 1666, and the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Nearby to the cave in which she lived is a petrifying well, also known as a dropping well. This is the oldest tourist attraction to charge a fee in England, and has been operated since 1630. The water of the well is so rich in sulphate and carbonate that artefacts may be put in the well to be "petrified" (encrusted)...
Finally a climb up the steep steps to see Knaresborough Castle and the wonderful view of the viaduct and the river below ♥️

Fantastic stop off at Brigham Rocks..Weird and wonderfully shaped giant rock formations, created by an immense river 100 million years before the first dinosaurs walked the earth.
The rocks, sculpted by 320 million years of movement of entire continents as well as hundreds of thousands of years of ice, rain and wind, have taken on weird and wonderful shapes. With a little imagination, they resemble familiar creatures such as the Dancing Bear, the Gorilla, the Eagle and the Turtle.Lue lisää

A very wet and windy week at Harrogate for North Yorkshire Wild Festival... They promised to turn the big fans off to calm the wind but it didn't happen 😂...
Dampened spirits til Saturday night when I eventually ventured out (a little worse for wear after a Wales rugby win 🙂)...and actually spoke to a few people and enjoyed myself 👍

Finding My Spirit Animal....

I stayed last night next to Sweetheart Abbey... No phone signal and couldn't get the WiFi router to connect - until 4am when I realised that the SIM had expired and I changed it for the replacement 🙄..
I'd woken up just before midnight with just a little light left coming through the skylight.... Just enough for me to think a bat had flown at me 🦇... Of course I jumped up, opened the skylight fully and prepared to do battle with the little fella (with a cushion) to send him on his way. After staring at him for some time (without my glasses on) on the wall above my bed, I eventually realised he was just the handle of my 'picker upper' - guess it's just the meds again 🤣🤣
Anyhoos - the bat is not my spirit animal... It is, of course, the Cow 🐄 .... I woke up to my new friends saying 'Good Morning' right next to the van - they might have followed me all the way from Cumbria!

A little detour on the way to my luxury stay (Eden Valley Holidays Campsite for the night) led me to the horseshoe-shaped Rutter Force Waterfall near Appleby-in-Westmorland.
Immediately beside the waterfall is an old mill with a restored waterwheel - beautiful, and well worth a visit 🙂.Lue lisää

I spent the night on the moors above Orton with only the gusts of wind,and some friendly cows, for company.
This morning was spent chilling whilst listening to the rain on the van roof, before venturing out as the weather improved.
My parkup proved to be the perfect location to explore the Orton Scar, walking along the exposed limestone 'pavement' and moorland pathway to the top of Beacon Hill and the monument commemorating Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1887.
Turning back to return to Ginny, who was now just a speck in the distance, I admired the views of the Lakeland fells, the Howgills and the North Pennines around me and began my descent feeling 'on top of the world' 🙂Lue lisää

Lake Windermere

A busy day with planes, trains, automobiles...and boats! I started the journey with Ginny across to Lake Windermere from the North West coastline where I had spent a rainy, but undisturbed, night.
I decided to base myself for the day at National Trust's Fell Foot site towards the south eastern corner of the Lake. From here I was able to take the ferry boat across to Lakeside on the opposite side of Windermere, where I then stepped aboard a railway carriage pulled by the beautiful steam engine 'Princess' on its journey to Haverthwaite. After a quick look around I reboarded Princess for the return journey to Lakeside and quickly switched transport to the MV Teal for a leisurely cruise across the lake to the town of Bowness-on- Windermere.
After the peace and quiet of most of my time around the rural areas of the Lake District it was a change to step into a bustling tourist town, but I entered into the spirit and enjoyed a fish and chip lunch at one of the busy street cafés.
To complete my day of a variety of transport forms, I was surprised to hear, then see, a low flying military jet flying over the Lake.. Very Top Gun and not what I had expected to see at all!
By the time I was back on the MV Teal for my return journey my eyes were drooping and I was falling asleep...only to be rudely awakened when the whistle blew to signal we were about to port. One final journey on the passenger ferry boat and I was back to Ginny for a well earned rest and a bit of shut-eye 🙂Lue lisää
