  • Unexpected Detour!

    15. Juni 2023 ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Had planned to head towards East Anglia and travel up the North East coast to start the Scotland trip...but the heat had other ideas for my poor phone and caused it to turn off constantly, losing my satnav! After attempting to go 'old school' with an atlas, I failed miserably and missed my motorway junction, ending up much further up the M5 than I intended.. As they say though....'Every cloud....' and I've found a lovely little park up for the night and have revised my plans to now head up the North West of England and enjoy the Lake District before heading north of the border 🙂Weiterlesen

  • Moseley Old Hall - Saving a King

    16. Juni 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

A visit this afternoon to Moseley Old Hall at Wolverhampton to relive a key bit of of British history at an atmospheric Elizabethan home, famed for hiding King Charles II from Cromwell's army.
Walked through the same doorway as King Charles in 1651; saw the very bed he slept in - and the priest hole in which he hid from the soldiers who came to question his protector, Thomas Whitgreave. If he had been found, how different British history might have been...Weiterlesen

  • A Battle of Wills.. and Ginny Won!

    18. Juni 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

A mixed bag of a day today 🤔.. Slept well at a little park up just off a mountain road but when I wanted to get going this morning Ginny DiCamper had other ideas and wouldn't start!
I didn't panic though... I coached her gently with a few well chosen words and eventually managed to start her with my jump start pack - don't really know how; not even sure it was switched on properly, but it was enough to make Ginny to decide to play ball - not for long though!
Problem No.2 reared its head when the cable from my van battery to my hab area came off due to me messing around with the van battery. I still didn't panic though...
With the van started I thought I would just get on my way and sort out the loose cable later.
Off on a little jaunt to Castlerigg Stone Circle, all went well and I enjoyed a homemade icecream after my short walk. Feeling brave I decided I show Ginny who's boss after letting me down first thing so I planned a route to take me over Honister Pass - and that's where I was proved to be very wrong...
After attempting to coax Ginny up the steep roads, generally in 1st gear, Ginny put me firmly in my place by completely overheating and steaming from her engine like Thomas the Tank...
Like a pro, I still didn't panic - and managed to pull over at Honiton Slate Mine. After a quiet sit down and a cup of tea, I realised that Ginny is very much the boss and was going no further up Honister Pass so I would need to replan my route.
Sheepfaced, I waited for the engine to cool and topped up the water and refixed the loose cable...
With one final show of her ' Boss' status, Ginny threw a wobbly on the way back down the pass when I needed to pull over for an oncoming vehicle to pass. She hit a pothole and made a very convincing sound like I'd hit the dry stone wall at the side of the road... Not again I thought 🥺..
As soon as I was able I pulled over to check for damage.. This time Lady Luck and Ginny had smiled on me - no damage, just Ginny throwing away a hub cap in disgust at me.
So now I've headed to the North West coast for the evening..sitting by the sea at Maryport.
Not sure if this competes with our local Welsh coastline but it'll do nicely 🙂

  • Lake Windermere

    19. Juni 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

A busy day with planes, trains, automobiles...and boats! I started the journey with Ginny across to Lake Windermere from the North West coastline where I had spent a rainy, but undisturbed, night.
I decided to base myself for the day at National Trust's Fell Foot site towards the south eastern corner of the Lake. From here I was able to take the ferry boat across to Lakeside on the opposite side of Windermere, where I then stepped aboard a railway carriage pulled by the beautiful steam engine 'Princess' on its journey to Haverthwaite. After a quick look around I reboarded Princess for the return journey to Lakeside and quickly switched transport to the MV Teal for a leisurely cruise across the lake to the town of Bowness-on- Windermere.
After the peace and quiet of most of my time around the rural areas of the Lake District it was a change to step into a bustling tourist town, but I entered into the spirit and enjoyed a fish and chip lunch at one of the busy street cafés.
To complete my day of a variety of transport forms, I was surprised to hear, then see, a low flying military jet flying over the Lake.. Very Top Gun and not what I had expected to see at all!
By the time I was back on the MV Teal for my return journey my eyes were drooping and I was falling asleep...only to be rudely awakened when the whistle blew to signal we were about to port. One final journey on the passenger ferry boat and I was back to Ginny for a well earned rest and a bit of shut-eye 🙂

  • Orton Scar

    20. Juni 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

I spent the night on the moors above Orton with only the gusts of wind, and some friendly cows, for company.
This morning was spent chilling whilst listening to the rain on the van roof, before venturing out as the weather improved.
My parkup proved to be the perfect location to explore the Orton Scar, walking along the exposed limestone 'pavement' and moorland pathway to the top of Beacon Hill and the monument commemorating Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1887.
Turning back to return to Ginny, who was now just a speck in the distance, I admired the views of the Lakeland fells, the Howgills and the North Pennines around me and began my descent feeling 'on top of the world' 🙂

  • Finding My Spirit Animal....

    22. Juni 2023 in Schottland ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

I stayed last night next to Sweetheart Abbey... No phone signal and couldn't get the WiFi router to connect - until 4am when I realised that the SIM had expired and I changed it for the replacement 🙄..
I'd woken up just before midnight with just a little light left coming through the skylight.... Just enough for me to think a bat had flown at me 🦇... Of course I jumped up, opened the skylight fully and prepared to do battle with the little fella (with a cushion) to send him on his way. After staring at him for some time (without my glasses on) on the wall above my bed, I eventually realised he was just the handle of my 'picker upper' - guess it's just the meds again 🤣🤣
Anyhoos - the bat is not my spirit animal... It is, of course, the Cow 🐄 .... I woke up to my new friends saying 'Good Morning' right next to the van - they might have followed me all the way from Cumbria!
Let's see if they find me at the next stop 🙂
