    Day 1 - the journey

    August 14 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

Picked our sitter Kyle up from Shotton, lovely young Australian guy. Bus into Chester, a quick freshener at the Town crier, then discovered our train to Liverpool was cancelled. Had to get an Uber @ £39. Uneventful flight apart from Helen overenjoying her playlist 🎶 . Taxi was a great bonus- into our apartment at a good time, so that we have a nightcap at a classy wine 🍷 bar.Read more

  • Day 2 Faro

    August 15 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Woke up to breakfast outside our door. Nice touch patis de nata. Had them with a coffee before going off to explore. 5 minute walk to the front, found where the boats 🚢 depart, then headed into the old town. Found a little rooftop restaurant and had a delightful lunch with wine 🍷 looking over the terracacotta rooftops. Back to base to get our beach gear then got the ferry over to Praia del faro beach. Had a nice dip in the sea, then a wine in the bar before getting the boat back. In the evening, we were out a bit late for food (they stop service at 10), but found a place close to us and then hit the sack. Packed a lot into todayRead more

  • Day 3 Vila real santo antonio

    August 16 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

A 1 hour train trip east gave us views of flamingos and we arrived in Vila Real. A pleasant little place looking over the river to Spain. Had a beer overlooking the river then a wander and a final beer in a tapas bar before heading back. Had to drag the 2 cases (one handle broken) 10 minutes uptown to our ew place. Not great - a tiny room and shared facilities, but did have a quick dip in the small pool. Had a beer on the roof terrace before heading into town and had a gorgeous tapas at Chelseas before finding the Irish bar. Crazy fast singer, then a band at midnight. Home for 2.30 am 😴Read more

  • Day 4 Thai beach

    August 17 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Jo offered us a lift to theirs which was really nice. Had a coffee by the marina then she arrived to transport us 25 minutes over to Vale de lobo. Got changed and prepped in their lovely apartment then a taxi over to Thai beach. Wow! What a wild party place - extravagant staff, drinks flowing, tunes bouncing, a sax player, singers DJs, all set up for partying. The food was incidental. After a few hours it was a bit much for my little head (and hearing aids!) so I headed outside while all continued dancing on the chairs. A one-off must do experience 🤩Read more

  • Day 5 local

    August 18 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Walked down to the front after getting a little lost and headed east along the beach. Got to Maria's and had a beer stop, then back to base for some time by the pool. Went down to the square in the evening, tried 3 restaurants that were all very mediocre and massively overpriced. Had battered squid rings and a beef stroganoff in Sandbanks for silly money 💰. Back to base for a nightcap.Read more

  • Day 6 Mama mia!

    August 19 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Took another beach walk, this time towards Vilamoura, but only a short one as we are off for lunch to BJs oceanside restaurant. What a place, straight out of a scene from Mama mia. We shared a delicious filet mignon kebab to start, then the giant prawns. A never-ending flow of wine and live music, a really enjoyable afternoon. Followed by drinks back at the beachside bar on the front, then we popped up to the supermarket so that we could entertain back on our terrace. A great day 😀Read more

  • Day 7 Quarteira

    August 20 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Ellie and Hen were going to see the wedding venue, so we decided to go for a long walk. Walked west on the beach up to BJs and had a wine stop there. Got chatting to a couple of women around our age who always go there. One had lost her husband in his mid 50s. They seemed inspired by us meeting up in later life and it working ! Onto Quarteira where we stopped at a Brazilian cafe for sardines, all you can eat meat and sald etc and a Jarra of wine, all for 25 euros. A bit stuffed we headed back and had a quick dip in the rough but refreshing sea. In the evening the Laverys had booked for a meal in Vilamoura, a nice place with a fully laden grapevine. Helen ended up making us Negronis 🥃Read more

  • Day 8 Cheeky pup

    August 21 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Went for aimless walk where we didn't really get anywhere, but got some steps in. Had a few relaxers on the balcony mid afternoon. Helen had a cheeky nap and I thought the night was over, so got myself a pizza. But, the party animal awoke after an hour and Andy messaged to say they were at the Cheeky pup so off we went, to watch a cool wedding band called the Keys and chatted to a guy from Llandudno amongst the throng of Essex posersRead more

  • Day 9 (non) Boat day

    August 22 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Breakfast and coffee in the sun, then all off for the 'boat trip'. Except that Andy got the day wrong! 🤣 . Back to base via Elys florists and afternoon on our balcony again. Over to sunset Maria's for the vibes and the views (Gary speed's son was there) and a meal. A rubbish version of a curry (korma style). Back to Cheeky pups again for a a great Irish bandRead more

  • Day 10 Deserta island

    August 23 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Groundhog day arrives - off to Faro again for our special boat trip with Cap'n Andy. What a brilliant day! Cruised over to the lighthouse island, then onto Deserta where we had a lovely lunch of oven baked seabass in an eco friendly restaurant. Back to the beach while Andy took the lads for a spin and some dolphin 🐬 spotting, then back to Faro. Out to Tony's pizzeria in the evening then a few nightcaps with AndyRead more

    August 24 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Time to pack up after a fantastic week in Vale do Lobo. Said goodbye to Jo and Andy then booked an uber for £40 over to Lagos with a very fast driver. Dropped our luggage and wandered into town to suss out trips and venues. Had a wine in the market rooftop cafe and booked a kayak trip. Found the old town which was very nice and got some beers and chicken wings. Back to lovely Villa Boho apartment for an hour by the pool then walked into town a delightful had a not so good meal.Read more

  • Day 12 kayaking

    August 25 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Walked to town for a coffee and a pre-trip wine, then off to meet our boat at 2pm. We were taking about 20 minutes to a coastal spot then launched off in our 2-person kayaks. A great little adventure navigating caves and rock formations for 90 minutes or so, then a quick dip into the sea. Back to base for a beer by the marina, then home to shower. In the evening Helen found a lovely little restaurant where we were personally cooked a filet mignon steak 😋 by the Keith Floyd of the Algarve! Home for an early nightRead more
