    Whiskey and Fairies

    When in Scotland and you need to keep dry....go whiskey tasting.
    After a stop off at Port reef, the main town, it was off to Uig to see The Fairy Glen. According to Scottish folklore fairies live here in the grasdy mounds. They can be good or bad, luring you with music into their homes to party. When you leave its 100yrs later. So beware.Okumaya devam et

    Goodbye friends

    🎵 sunshine on my. shoulders ....🎵 really summed up today.
    It's a sad day as we're saying goodbye to our tour friends this afternoon and swapping to new group.
    Before that happens there's things to see. Ross took us on another detour to see the ruins of a cadtle then up the Pass to look down on Elieen Donan Castle and views across the lake. We stopped to see film star horses Mungo and Peter . Peter was out of his yard and came looking for a feed. Then a photo stop of Glen Shield while it was sunny.
    It was then onto the Drundreggan rewinding center.
    Lunch stop at Fort Augustus the town at the southern end of Loch Ness.

    After farewelling our tour group we joined another group to head north . Barb and Ben swapped with us.
    Back to Fort Augustus before driving along Loch Ness to Inverness. We stopped at Falls of Foyer . Our legs got a good workout walking down to see them then up again.
    One last stop before Inverness. The beach at the northern end of Loch Ness. It doesn't compare to our beaches.    Okumaya devam et

    The Orkneys

    An early morning start as its a 3hr drive to the ferry which takes us over to the Orkneys.
    A few quick stops on the way to stretch our legs.
    The main stop was a walk to see Dunrobin Castle, home to the Duke of Sutherland. Very regal looking.
    Onto the ferry. Luckily the ride was smooth .
    The Orkneys are made up of lots of islands liked by barriers (man made raised strips of land originally used to stop german subs getting into the Scapaflow) or ferry. The main town Kirkwall is on the island Mainland.
    The Magnus Cathedral built 1137 is named after Magnus who was Scotland's 1st Christian martyr in 1115.    Okumaya devam et

    Another stunning morning has dawned. Said goodbye to the Orkneys. But before we leave, a little more history, the Italian Church.
    The Church was created by the Italian prisoners of war in 1943 to remind them of home.They were given 2 spare Nissan huts which they painted inside under the supervision of artist Dominica Chiocchetti.
    Once back on the mainland it was a 6hr winding drive around the coast to Ullapool. The scenery changed from rolling hills, some with windfarms to rocky outcrops and stunning beaches.
    Drove through flow country which is now a UNESCO area due to restoring and saving the peat.
    Also went through the world heritage Geopark where there's gnice rock,the oldest type in the world.
    The scenery was spectacular, wild and beautiful

    On the walking path to Skara Brae, there're stones showing what's happened in the world since skara Brae was built starting with man on the moon, 1969 and going backwards.; The fall of Rome 476 AD, the Temple of Solomon 972 BC, Stonehenge 2100 BC and Skara Brae 3100 BC. It's hard to believe its so old and peoe lived in these houses.
    Wr also looked through Skaill House. Built in the 1700s , it is owned by the family who discovered Skara Brae. Inside is the dinner set used by Captain Cook on his fateful voyage.    Okumaya devam et

    Scapa beach

    Today dawned beautifully sunny which was perfect as it was an outdoor day.
    We started off by visiting Scapa beach, no waves today. A black guillemot possibly with avian flu was resting on the water's edge.
    It was then off to see Maeshowe chambered cain. This was built 5,000 years ago . The entrance is positioned so the winter solstice sun enters the cain. The doors low so you show respect. The cain was used by the village for births, sending your spirit on its way, warmth and food storage in winter.
    Then a short drive to Yesenby the most wrsterly point on Mainland. Theres nothing between here and Canada.    Okumaya devam et

    There are only 26 of the 60 standing stones left. They form a circle surrounded by a hedge ( ditch) . Each stone is exactly 6 ° apart. It dates back to between 2600 -2000 BC
    On to the Stones of Stenness , thought to be the oldest circle and henge, and Barnhouse village.Okumaya devam et

    Stopped at Birsay to see the Earl's Palace, 1574. Built by Robert Stewart, Earl of Orkney.
    St Magnus Church is where Magnus was buried before being moved to Kirkwall Cathederal.
    Off to the Broch of Gurness. This is from the iron age and is a monument tower ( maybe for a chief) surrounded by a village of houses and workshops built by the Picts.
    Last stop before heading home was to see a view of Kirkwall and the surrounding area.
    We could've spent longer in places as there's so much to see. It's hard to get your head around the age of the ruins.
    While Skra Brae may be the oldest my favourite was the Broch of Gurness

    Gordon was very happy to finally make it to Culloden.
    Walked around the battlefield and found the cains of his clan, the Campbells of Argyl and the McPherson. The Campbells fought for the British against Stewart. The McPhersons were for the Jacobites. The battle, 1746 was all over within the hour with 1500 Jacobites dead and 1000 British.
    A stop to see the 4000 yr old Clava Cains. The cains are surrounded by standing stones and the entrance lines up with the winter solstice.
    Carr-bridge a cute little village and home to the world porridge competition.
    Then onwards to Edinburgh.

    Fun fact: the song "my bonnie lies over the ocean" and the "Skye Boat song" are about Bonnie Prince Charles aka Charles Edward Stewart    Okumaya devam et

    We just had to visit the famous Bobby and rub his nose for good luck. 1858 Bobby's owner , John Gray died and was buried in Greyfriars kirkyard. Bobby out lived Gray by 14 years and spent that time by his grave.
    Afterwards we took a stroll down colourful Victoria St where J K Rowling wrote Harry Potter. The line into the Harry Potter shop was crazy.
    Then on to Edinburgh Castle, home to Mary Queen of Scots. The cannons fired at precisely 1pm.    Okumaya devam et

    The Castle

    St Margrets Chapel is the oldest building in Edinburgh.
    Saw the Scotish Crown Jewels in the Royal Palace.
    There's lovely little a dog Cemetery for the mascots and working dogs
    Just outside the Castle is the Witches Well, which commemorates people executed in the 1500s and 1600s for witchcraft.
    This evening it was time to farewell Hannah for another year. It's been great to see her even seeking in a few extra evening visits.    Okumaya devam et

    Today we collected our car and headed out of Edinburgh.
    Stopped at the Kelpies. Magnificent work of art standing 30m high. They acknowledge the horses that were used as transport along the waterways. There's also a folklore that they were shape shifting water spirits, often appearing as horses. They would lure unsuspecting people to ride them and then be carried to their watery deaths.
    Afterwards we drove up the west side of Loch Lomond, detouring into the cute town of Luss then finally to Arrochar on Loch Long.    Okumaya devam et

    We were planning to see Inverrary Castle today but of course it was closed.
    Onto plan B, visit the Fairy Bridge of Glen Creran. After a 3km walk through beautiful moss covered trees to the stone fairy bridge it was time to head to Newtonmore via the scenic route. And scenic it was , beautiful lochs, rocky mountains, one lane road, tiny villages and finally pouring rain we arrived.Okumaya devam et

    Newtonmore is supposedly the geographical centre of Scotland and home to the Clan MacPherson museum. As Gordon is a MacPherson he was very excited to visit and see his relative Christina on the wall.
    We also visited the ruins of Ruthven Barracks, which was built for government troops in 1715 after the Jacobite rising.

    Last day

    Today is our last day in Scotland. It's sad to leave, we've really loved it but more adventures await us.
    Anyway we filled our day travelling the back roads for most of it.
    Stopped in La for a good coffee then found General Wade Memorial. In the 1700s General Wade built military roads so the military could get to the Highlands if there was a Jacobite rising.
    Pitlochry was a pretty village but very touristy. Onto Dunkeld, another pretty village. Visited the garden dedicated to Betrix Potter then headed to Dundee.    Okumaya devam et

    Hello Amsterdam

    Goodbye Scotland, hello Amsterdam 👋.
    After a fuss free effort to get to Edinburgh airport , getting to our accommodation in Amsterdam was a different story.
    We decided to go by train as taxi eas to pricey.
    1st train ✅️. But our ticket wouldn't work and no to ask why. Found a way through the barrier.
    2nd train ❌️, wrong train. We ended up
    30mins out of Amsterdam, (my error) so our ticket didnt work here and had trouble getting off the station. Managed to catch a train back. Then we needed a bus. Wrong bus ❌️ (Gordon's error). Got another bus ✅️ Finally made it to our home for the next few days 2hrs later. 🤦‍♀️.
    On the plus side we saw typical Dutch windmills and the country side.
    So far most instructions are in Dutch and no one at the info stations    Okumaya devam et

    Around town

    No getting lost today.
    Started with a walk to the Ann Frank House. An amazing ,sad, sombre experience. So much information to listen to and see.
    After that time for something lighter like Dutch pancakes followed by a canal trip.
    Needed a walk so wandered around the little street in the Jordaan area. So pretty with some interesting shops. Came across this grey heron just perched on a car, thought it was a statue until it moved. Glad its not my car.    Okumaya devam et

    Exploring

    Today was a definite bad hair day today. The wind was gale force with a few sessions of rain.
    Not that it stopped us doing a walking tour. The tour was fantastic. Our leader was so informative. He took us through the historic centre, the Jewish quater, Chinatown, and we heard all about red-light district, ( he's not allowed to take us in).
    Ended up having lunch with a Canadian couple from the tour.
    Later we visited the Rijksmuseum. Loved it.
    Fun fact. 1. Belgium used to be part of the Netherlands and is where the King lives.
    2. Netherlands means lowlands.
    3. Holland is an area which includes Amsterdam. It's name means hollowed out. From when they drained the water so they could build.
    4. In the next few years the red light district will be closed due to too many tourists plus its dirty. The sex workers will be moved to Sth Amsterdam and into 1 huge building.    Okumaya devam et

    Todays weather was definitely worse than yesterday. Rain rain rain wind wind wind.
    Plan A go out of town ❌️
    Plan B Van Gough Museum ❌️ booked out
    Plan C Stedelijk museum ✅️. So much better than we expected. It has modern and contemporary art from 1850 to today, showing how art and design have changed according to world events. There was furniture, textile, recycled, jewellery as well as photographs.
    The sun was shining when wr came out so off for a ferry ride. Saw a very different side of Amsterdam.    Okumaya devam et
