    Urus islands, Lake Titicaca

    January 3, 2019 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Floating islands. About 90 islands built up from reeds on a thick foundation mainly of roots that float. The first pic is a look at one of the islands across their fish pond. Then a model of a couple buildings on top of layers of reed, mostly papayrus, which is how the island is maintained. Then some of the roots in a pot of water demonstrating how they float. Next is some of the women demonstrating forming and anchoring the islands. The islands are sometimes moved. An example is a wedding where the islands of the two families are joined for 3 days to celebrate. Then a papayrus boat similar to kon tiki I took a ride on. Finally the interior of one of the houses.Read more
