Now that Carnaval is over and the clean up is far enough along, I was able to see the city. Recife was originally just the port for Olindo. Now it's the bigger city. The Dutch occupied the city for awhile in the 17th century, and they are the ones who started building the city. The second pic looks across the old harbor to the sandstone reef where a local sculptor has several large pieces. Then some buildings in the old city. Next is the first synagogue in the Americas, built while the Dutch were in charge, and their religious tolerance extended here. Next is the warehouse where giant puppets for Carnaval are stored. Last is Republic Square, where most of the local government facilities are located.Read more
