Old town Baku, Azerbaijan

Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan. The old city is beautiful and fun. The city wall is still present, and there aren't any obviously new buildings inside the wall. Most everything has been restored and/repurposed. Great place.
First is a look from stop the Maiden Tower shown in the second pic. This tower dates back more than 2,000 years. Next are the ruins of St. Bart's Russian Orthodox Church, destroyed by the Soviets. Baku city

The newer parts of Baku are right next to the old town, with lots to do. First are the three iconic buildings lit up in the colors of the Azeri flag. Next is one of the classic buildings, followed by the arcade in the garden at the philharmonic hall. 4th is the states at a museum that remembers important Azeri writers. Fifth is the Opera house, and last is one of the pedestrian shopping streets, just outside the old city wall.Read more

Gobustan mud volcanos

Azerbaijan sits on the Caspian oil fields. These mud volcanoes sit in the midst of an area with many oil seeps on to the surface. The volcanoes are probably gas and water bubbling to the surface.
The first pic looks across the field and the second shows how the mud builds up mounds. The rest of the pics look at the bubbling mud at several of the he mounds.Read more

Pronounced la-HEECH, this is an old, small village that has been a copper smithing town that has become rather touristy. The setting is beautiful and the road in is spectacular, especially the sections that are carved in the rock with sheer cliffs off the roadside.Read more

Hilltop town with the palace of the Shaki Khans at the top. Unfortunately, this was closed for maintenance when we were there. The first pic looks over the wall at the summer palace, the only remaining building of the complex. Next is a museum. 3rd and 4th are inside the Karavansarai Hotel, a converted silk road caravansarai. This is where we stayed. Very nice. The last two look at the town.Read more

Mostly ruins of w former capital sacked by a Persian invasion. The only remaining building is a 16th Century church.
The first pic is the entire building from a distance. Then a couple inside pics of icons and the iconostasis. Then the watchtower across the valley. Next is the former hall, now a museum and a closer look at the tower.Read more
