I've already highlighted Portomarin during my 2022 Camino but just to give some context:

We actually made it here in a good clip of time much faster than I was planning. I guess time flies when you have a good time 😁

The famous 52 stone steps of Portomarín mark the iconic entrance into town for pilgrims walking the Camino Francés. Located just after crossing the bridge over the Miño River, this steep staircase leads through the ancient Roman-arch gateway into the historic center.

Church of San Juan (or San Nicolás): This imposing fortified church in Portomarín was moved stone by stone in the 1960s due to the construction of the Belesar reservoir. Its interior and facades house Romanesque imagery, including representations of Christ.

Santiago (St. James) stands proudly in the town center, in front of the 16th-century Pazo of the Count of Maza (the current Town Hall). Erected by the Galician government, the sculpture often features Santiago depicted with a cloak adorned with stars, nodding to his resting place in Santiago de Compostela.

  • Castro de Castromaior

    May 26 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

The Castro de Castromaior is one of the most important and spectacular Iron Age archaeological sites in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. It is located in the municipality of Portomarín (province of Lugo), right at the foot of the French Way of St. James, on the stage connecting Portomarín with Palas de Rei.

It was declared a Property of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 2010, thanks to its excellent state of preservation and its historical significance.

  • Capilla de la Magdalena and Cruceiro de Lameiros

    May 26 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

Capilla de la Magdalena (Chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene) Located about 12 km (7.5 miles) southwest of Palas de Rei, this 19th-century chapel was built using stone from an old medieval pilgrim hospital. It is a highly popular stop to get your credential stamped and enjoy the shaded rest area.

The Cruceiro de Lameiros is one of the most unique, famous, and artistic monuments on the French Way, dating back to the year 1674. It is located in the hamlet of Lameiros, part of the parish of Ligonde, on the border between the municipalities of Palas de Rei and Monterroso (Lugo).
    Features of the *Crucero*

The Two Faces: Unlike most Galician stone crosses (*cruceros*), this one features two main images.

On the east-facing side (from which pilgrims approach), stands the Crucified Christ, symbolizing the suffering, pain, and sacrifice inherent to the route.

On the west-facing side (the one the pilgrim sees after passing the monument), stands the figure of the Virgin of Sorrows, representing the comfort, relief, and hope of the journey yet to come.

The Base of the Calvary: The four sides of its square base feature sculpted reliefs depicting the Symbols of Christ's Passion: skulls (representing death), hammers, nails, and crowns of thorns.

The Shaft: The central post or column of the monument displays intertwined reliefs of these same religious motifs.

    ⁦Igrexa de Santiago de Lestedo

    Church of Santiago de Lestedo

A simple church featuring vernacular architecture. The nave is rectangular, with two entrance portals, and includes a presbytery at the eastern end; the sacristy is attached to the rear of the presbytery and features two access doors. The roof is tiled, with two- and four-pitched sections. Inside the nave, there is a high choir loft located at the western end; the main façade features a lintelled portal and is topped by a two-arched bell gable. The interior preserves two altarpieces: one in the main chapel and another on the side, both created by folk artists.Read more
