Our flight from Toronto Sunday evening brought us to Athens Monday morning. After transfer to our hotel in downtown Athens, we had lunch at a lovely bakery nearby.
We strolled toward the Acropolis passing several historical sites along the way:
Byzantine era Greek Orthodox Church of Kapnicharea, built in the 11 century, one of the oldest churches in Athens
Library of Hadrian
Ancient Agora
Roman Forum
We continued our climb uphill to the entrance of the Acropolis and did a self-guided evening tour:
Odeon of Herodus Atticus
Propylaea
Temple of Athena Nike
Parthenon
Theatre of Dionysus
Erechtheion

Santorini

On Tuesday, we transferred from our hotel in Athens to the port to catch a high speed ferry to Santorini. The agent that was supposed to bring us to the port got into an accident before reaching our hotel so we got an authentic Athens taxi ride experience instead (driver didn't speak English but yelled on his phone and texted while driving with music blarring at max volume for the entire ride - hilarious!)
Had a relaxing 5 hr boat ride to the port of Fira on Santorini then took a shuttle to our hotel in Kamari. Strolled the black rock/sand beach of Kamari and had another wonderful authentic Greek dinner at a local beach front restaurant.Read more

Santorini - day 2

On Wednesday, we took the public bus to travel around Santorini and see the sights.
We visited the archaeological site of Akrotiri (a bit like Pompeii only 4000 years older!). Nancy and Jodi took the perilous stroll down to the red sand beaches at Akrotiri, then we bused up to Oia on the north tip of the island for a short hike on a portion of the Fira- Oia trail. Then back again to Fira to enjoy a beautiful sunset at rooftop restaurant. Finally bused back to Kamari to spend some quality time with our newly adopted feline friend.Read more

Crete - Heraklion

A brief magnitude 6.2 earthquake woke us up at 6:19am May 22 local time in Santorini. After breakfast and a last morning stroll in Kamari we went back to Fira to catch the high speed ferry to Heraklion on the island of Crete.

While in Heraklion, we strolled the streets inside this old Venetian walled city, visited the ancient ruins of the Knossos Palace ( built about 1700 BC), toured the Archaeological Museum and spent a half day on the Ammoudora beach.

Wonderful mix of ancient history and modern everyday Greek culture.Read more

Crete - Chania

Drove from Heraklion to Chania along a waters-edge scenic road. Driver said he had never experienced such high winds while driving this road. The next day the high winds from the south covered the island of Crete in a cloud of orange/red dust carried from the Sahara desert. A rain later in the day scrubbed the air and the blue skies returned. Enjoyed wandering the streets of the walled old town of Chania, went to the Maritime Museum and enjoyed a day trip to the pink sandy beach of Elafonissi on the western tip of Crete. Great food and beautiful scenery.Read more

A short flight from Chania (Crete) back to Athens for our last day in Greece.

Toured the Plaka neighborhood near the Acropolis, the botanical gardens, the Panathenaic Stadium (venue of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896) and walked around the base of the Acropolis to capture some great views.Read more
