    First Steps in Washington DC

    I start from the hotel in the direction of the White House. Past a few churches and the first equestrian statue. You immediately get a different feeling in this city than in New York City or Philadelphia. People wear fancy clothes and suits. They move much faster. And are either on the phone or engrossed in deep conversations with each other. The traffic is also very different. There is no honking, the streets are emptier, and there are almost only fancy, big, polished cars driving through the streets. I have also discovered street art, but was unfortunately already everything for the day, also it does not fit right here.

    Los geht's vom Hotel Richtung dem Weißen Haus. Vorbei an ein paar Kirchen und der ersten Reiterstatue. Man hat in dieser Stadt sofort ein anderes Gefühl als in New York City oder Philadelphia. Die Menschen tragen schicke Kleider und Anzüge. Sie bewegen sich viel schneller. Und sind entweder am Telefon oder untereinander in tiefgründige Gespräche vertieft. Auch der Verkehr ist ganz anders. Es wird nicht gehupt, die Straßen sind leerer, und es fahren fast nur schicke, große, geputzte Autos durch die Straßen. Ich habe auch direkt wieder Streetart entdeckt, war aber leider auch schon alles für den Tag, passt auch nicht so richtig hierher.    Les mer

    The White House

    The White House. And the first time the feeling of being watched. Cameras, policemen, and Secret Service everywhere. Some of the guards are obviously in uniform and their cars are marked, but others can only be recognized by their look and the button in their ear, and some probably not at all. Also the monochrome, large cars with tinted windows are regularly seen standing somewhere in Washington. There are many closed roads. Many paths and parks are surrounded by mobile fences. The whole thing exudes power, but also control and danger. And if you've watched all the movies like "White House Down" like I have, then you also flinch when a garbage truck suddenly turns the corner.

    Das Weiße Haus. Und das erste Mal das Gefühl beobachtet zu werden. Überall Kameras, Polizisten, und Secret Service. Die Wachleute stehen zum Teil ganz offensichtlich in Uniform und beschrifteten Autos da, zum Teil erkennt man Sie aber nur an ihrem Blick und dem Knopf im Ohr, und zum Teil wahrscheinlich gar nicht. Auch die einfarbigen, großen Autos mit den getönten Scheiben sieht man regelmäßig irgendwo in Washington stehen. Es gibt viele gesperrte Straßen. Viele Wege und Parks sind von mobilen Zäunen umstellt. Das ganze strahlt Macht aus, aber auch Kontrolle und Gefahr. Und wenn man wie ich alle Filme wie zum Beispiel "White House Down" geguckt hat, dann zuckt man auch, wenn auf einmal ein Müll-Laster um die Ecke gebogen kommt.    Les mer

    Washington Monument

    Through the Ellipse, the park behind the White House, I walked towards the Washington Monument. The huge obelisk that can be seen almost everywhere in Washington and therefore will appear in other photos. It is the center of The National Mall, the big green park between all the big monuments to see in Washington. What there are more of in Washington than in other cities are these overly colorful food trucks. They're in every open space here.

    Durch die Ellipse, der Park hinter dem Weißen Haus, ging ich dann Richtung Washington Monument. Der riesige Obelisk, der von fast überall in Washington gesehen werden kann und deswegen auch noch auf anderen Fotos auftauchen wird. Er ist das Zentrum der The National Mall, dem großen grünen Park zwischen all den großen Monumenten, die es in Washington zu sehen gibt. Was es in Washington mehr gibt, als in anderen Städten sind diese übertrieben bunten Food Trucks. Die stehen hier auf jeder freien Fläche.    Les mer

    The U.S. Capitol

    We have all seen the U.S. Capitol in the news at the latest thanks to the last president and his order for storming by his supporters. Again, fences and guards, the usual picture in Washington. The building is imposing like all the others. And when you turn around and look back at the park and the obelisk, you only realize how vast it all is (and how much I walked).

    Das U.S. Capitol haben wir ja alle spätestens dank dem letzten Präsidenten und seiner befohlenen Erstürmung durch seine Anhänger alle schon in den Nachrichten gesehen. Auch hier wieder Zäune und Wachen, das gewohnte Bild in Washington. Das Gebäude ist imposant wie alle anderen. Und wenn man sich umdreht und zurück auf den Park und den Obelisken guckt, dann weiß man erst, wie weitläufig das alles ist (und wieviel ich gelaufen bin).    Les mer

    Union Station & Supreme Court

    The Washington Union Station, the station of Washington is huge compared to the scoreboard and the few trains that run here. I was very glad to have finally arrived here, because I had to pee urgently and there are no other public toilets in this huge area. From the station I walked behind the Capitol, where the Supreme Court stands, the highest court in America.

    Die Washington Union Station, der Bahnhof von Washington ist riesig, im Vergleich zu der Anzeigetafel und den wenigen Zügen, die hier fahren. Ich war sehr froh endlich hier angekommen zu sein, denn ich musste dringend pinkeln und es gibt in diesem riesen Areal sonst keine öffentlichen Toiletten. Vom Bahnhof ging ich dann hinter dem Capitol lang, wo noch der Supreme Court steht, das höchste Gericht Amerikas.    Les mer

    The National Mall

    Back I went on the other side of the mall. To the left and right of the mall are many other interesting buildings. Since the tourist season is actually over, many buildings for renovation and restoration are hidden behind scaffolding. Nevertheless, all very impressive buildings.

    Zurück ging ich auf der anderen Seite der Mall. Links und rechts der Mall stehen viele andere interessante Gebäude. Da die Touristen Saison eigentlich vorbei ist sind sehr viele Gebäude für Renovierungen und Restauration hinter Baugerüsten versteckt. Trotzdem alles sehr imposante Gebäude.    Les mer

    Thomas Jefferson Memorial

    The Thomas Jefferson Memorial is located at the Tidal Basin, a small lake. When looking back at Washington from here, one thing stands out, and that is that there are no high-rise buildings in Washington. This is forbidden by an ordinance and thus Washington has in contrast to even very small cities in the U.S. a very different cityscape.

    Das Thomas Jefferson Memorial liegt am Tidal Basin, einem kleinen See. Beim Blick von hier zurück auf Washington fällt etwas auf, und zwar das es in Washington keine Hochhäuser gibt. Das ist durch eine Verordnung verboten und somit hat Washington im Gegensatz zu selbst sehr kleinen Städten in den USA ein ganz anderes Stadtbild.    Les mer

    The monument to the President of the United States, who was in office during the entire Second World War. In my eyes, the most unique monument. Unfortunately, I walked through from the wrong side. I recommend everyone to start on the right side.

    Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial

    Right next to the Roosevelt Memorial is the one for Martin Luther King Jr. An impressive stone of hope. Unfortunately, probably a struggle that will never be over.

    Direkt neben dem Roosevelt Memorial steht das für Martin Luther King Jr. Ein beeindruckender Stein der Hoffnung. Leider wohl ein Kampf, der nie zu Ende sein wird.Les mer
