• Day 15 - Gandhi’s Revenge

    March 7 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

I woke up at 4.24am to the sound of Jackie retching in the bathroom. Apparently she had been vomiting and had had diarrhoea as well as having stomach cramps for the previous hour.

My stomach was aching and as soon as Jackie vacated the bathroom, I rushed in and sat on the toilet as my bowels exploded.

I don’t need to go into any more detail, but for the next 8 hours Jackie and I were dashing from the bed to the toilet in some bizarre relay race. I would estimate that I visited the bathroom about 16 times and Jackie 12 times.

There was no doubt about it, we had contracted food poisoning from the curry the previous evening. Naturally it was my fault, because it had been my choice to go there.

Around 2pm, I was feeling brave enough to try and get to the pharmacy. To be on the safe side, I rolled up a dozen sheets of toilet paper and stuffed them between my buttocks!

Outside our room it was boiling hot and the smell of cooking meat on barbecues did not help my queasiness. I made it to pharmacy and tried to explain our symptoms with the use of hand gestures. I came away with orange enzo powder and gaviscon.

I then went to the supermarket opposite and bought a pack of 4 melon flavoured probiotic yoghurts and 4 yoghurt drinks. On the way home, I bought a bunch of 13 bananas, then picked up my laundry, which was unironed, but smelt lovely and fresh.

I made it back to the hotel room safely and back to bed, where we remained like John and Yoko.

We kept falling in and out of sleep throughout the afternoon and I was convinced that neither of us would sleep that night. I shouldn’t have worried. We watched the ‘I Swear’ movie on my stick until it finished at 8pm, then we both instantly fell asleep.
