• St Peter’s Basillica - Pope Leo

    May 10 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We checked out of our Trevi Fountain accommodation and put our luggage in storage so we could roam freely for the day. Our fast train to Cinque Terre wasn’t until 4.20pm. We roamed around Rome 😂 and eventually ended up at St Peter’s Square. I really wanted to see the sculpture ‘Pieta’ which was inside the Basillica. We arrived at 11.53am and I heard someone ask when the Pope was making his appearance. It was at 12pm!! Only 7 minutes away. We walked through security and into the square. Plenty of space to walk around and find a good position. He surprised us all and appeared from the building next to the Basillica. We had a great view, but couldn’t understand a word he said as it was all in Italian. Not to worry, it was still awesome to see and hear him speak to the people. We had no idea we would get to see him today. The first person I thought to do a video call with was Yvonne. So I talked to her and she got to see and hear Pope Leo with me. When his speech was over we walked into the Basillica. It was grand, beautiful, and of course very ornate. I got to see ‘Pieta’ before heading out. We were back out in the street by 1pm. So much happened in just one hour. 😂 We started our way back towards the Trevi Fountain to collect our luggage, stopping for a drink, then later a gelato. We got an UBER to the station. It was a Tesla, with the biggest boot space I’ve ever seen!! And the doors opened up like the car in Back to the Future. 😎 We arrived in Monterosso at 8pm, checked in and went for a walk along the beach and found a nice restaurant for dinner. Back in the room at 10.30pm getting ready for bed. Looking forward to waking up to this view for the next 3 mornings.Read more
