  • Nearly at the SA Border

    Well today sees us traveling along the longest straight stretch of road in Australia whilst having to keep an eye out for a variety of wild animals 🙄😳. We drove through Balladonia, Caiguna, Cocklebiddy and Madura. We crossed a time zone and then camped up at Emu Hill Road side camp 100 km west of the border to SA.

    It looks like the kiddies are settling into the traveling life 😴🙃.

  • Welcome to South Australia

    This morning saw us cross the border into South Australia - no stopping to check stuff 🤔.

    First stop was 13 km Peg Lookout where we had a good look at the Great Australian Bight. We then headed onto the best Bight lookout and had an amazing view whilst enjoying lunch 🥪😊. We then drove past Nullabor and Yalata Aboriginal Community and onto our stop for the night - Kidnippy Rest Stop where Mother Nature put out the welcome mat. 🌈Read more

  • Time Warp & Camp fire

    Today saw us leave Kidnippy Rest Area heading east towards Ceduna and Port Augusta. Drove through an area that was just like the wheat belt and is probably SA version. And it has its own farmers monument.

    Tonight we are camped at Kooma View Farmhouse where you can wander through the old house that looks and feels like nonna got up and just left. It is also our first camp fire of the trip. 🔥

  • On to Port Augusta

    Well we left our time warp farm camp site and drove through Kimba which has the claim to fame of being half way across Australia plus it has a rather large pink bird as one of its features…..

    Had to get out of the way for a rather large transport big truck thing 🙃

    Drive past Iron Knob 🤔 Mine Site and into Port Augusta where we will camp up, stock up on water and refresh for a couple of days.

    Well we had a walk around the town and everything is closed. Not even a coffee shop open for a coffee 🥴😝

    Not much to see 😔

    We head north tomorrow heading towards Coober Pedy.

    We left Port Augusta and headed north on our journey stopping in at Woomera.

    We had a wander through missile park, unfortunately the museum was closed for renovations 😖.

    This afternoon saw us pull into a rest area 220km south of Coober Pedy next to a waterless salt lake for the night.

    So far we have travelled 2639km on this adventure with lots more to come and 1 heated discussion 🙄😂

    Today we had North for the outback opal town of Coober Pedy.

    Let me tell you it is an outback town 😳. Red dirt old buildings and lots of trucks.

    Plus we have no internet as the tower is down 🙄

  • Russian Spy's in Coober Pedy

    Let’s go for a drive around Coober Pedy and check out the scenery.

    We headed out to the Kanku Breakaways Conservation Park where we saw the Dog Fence that crosses over 3 states to help keep the dingoes out of the pastoral lands. We also saw some very different and beautiful scenery.

    Had a wander through the old cemetery and who knew - not only is Coober Pedy home of the Opal but Russian Spy’s 🤣.

    Dinner was a large pizza that served us well for the next few days......

    Not much to see on this leg, more open plains, some bushes and red dirt.

    We crossed into the Northern Territory today and free camped approx 180 km south of Alice Springs.

    We arrived in Alice springs this morning and set up camp at the Discovery Caravan Park 5km out of town - Luxury + this place. Great place. Plus some friendly natives drop in to say hello. 🦜

    Dropped into town to get supplies and that was an eye opener let me tell you.

    Today was sight seeing day around Alice Springs

    Royal Flying Dr Service Museum tour - well worth it

    A drive around with a very dry Todd River

  • Alice to a Gravel Pit 😳

    We left the luxury of Discovery Holiday Park Alice Springs in a cloud of mist.

    Traveling north along the Stuart Highway we crossed the Tropic of Capricorn and lunch at Ti Tree. Drove past Barrow Creek and had a quick stop at Wauchope (a purpose built oasis in the middle of nowhere). Also the most expensive fuel so far at $2.45 ⛽️

    Drove past Alleron the large man on the hill 😳

    Along the way I did a bit of cloud picture deciphering - let’s see if you see what I see 🤣 remember I have been driving through outback Australia for the last 2 weeks 🙄😖 (shark and seal). 🤔

    We had a look at Karlu Karlu (Devils Marbles) and then onto our gravel pit stop for the night.

  • Nearly in Queensland

    Today saw us head towards the Qld border. The kids settled in for the drive before stopping at a roadside lake for lunch.

    Tonight’s camp was opposite the Avon Downs Police Station and memorial to the longest sheep drive in Australia. Made an old fashioned phone call home with a free pay phone 📞.

  • Lake Moondarra, Mount Isa

    Thought we would commune with nature today so we took a drive out to Lake Moondarra a lovely spot with walks, big lake, dam, water ski area etc.

    Took the kids for a walk along Wallaby Walk, they handled it like naturals. Plus some great views at the top. Took the scenic route home for a leisurely lunch and relaxing afternoon.Read more

  • Croc River Rest Stop

    Today we head East as we make our way to Cooktown.

    We had a drive through Mary Kathleen Town a now deserted townsite that was once a bustling town that housed workers for the nearby uranium mine. Now just a bunch of concrete pads.

    Thought we would pay a visit to the Burke & Wills memorial only to discover someone had pinched the plaque 😳😔

    Checked out Chinaman Creek Dam and painted silo at Cloncurry before turning north. A quick stop at Quamby for lunch and onto tonight’s watering hole on the banks of the Flinders River.

  • Talaroo Hot Springs

    After departing our river stop we headed to Normanton where we encountered Krys the largest crocodile captured way back in 1957 😳

    We then drove through Croydon and were driving along when we drove past a sign that said hot springs, a u turn later here we are at Talaroo Hot Springs. This place is a great little get away. Some First Nation heritage and hot springs to boot. Also went for a walk along the Einsaleigh River to stretch the legs.Read more

  • On the way to Ravenshoe

    After a relaxing dip in a private hot spring this morning we head off.

    We end up at Undarra Lava Tunnels however there was no available tours until well into next week 😖. So instead of going underground we went high above ground and hiked around the rim of Kalkani Volcano Crater.

    Our final destination for today is Ravenshoe - the highest town in Qld at a quaint train caravan park. Dinner was a nice pub meal at the Ravenshoe Hotel, the highest hotel in Qld of course.

    I can’t be biased so am putting the good and the bad in this journey of ours.

    On the schedule today was a self guided art deco walking tour of Innisfail. Have to say a bit disappointing the buildings would have been fantastic in their day however some of them need a bit of work.Read more
