Looked at the train ride..... The ride is so long that you have to take a bus back to your car so we decided to skip the train ride, and we just took the scenic drive in the truck that would be the same ride in the train.Read more

Only 1 camper in our area so nice and quiet with the river sounds. $12 a night

1/8 mile walk to the super turquoise pond. Supposedly it used to be a hot springs but has mostly filled up with silt. The silt is white so I'm guessing that's why the pool looks so turquoise.Read more

Errands, laundry, groceries, hiking, catching up, fire, and reading a magazine.

We got to know our host. She worked out of the country for about 11 years and her social security check is small. She sleeps in her truck with 2 sleeping bags. There is no electricity, no showers. And an old water pump. She makes minimum wage and is paid for 14 hours a week to be a host. I think she might be last 70's. She used to be the buyer for Walden books.

Very nice lady. We bought her a gift certificate for lunch out when she has her day off.Read more

Tonight was free with electric hook-up and great view. Started out by riding up to the Chimney Rock trail, then hiking to the top.

Went over a high pass that was 10, 856 feet high. Heading to San Luis Natl Forest. Snow in mountains

We drove over to the Great Sand Dunes. Really amazing. Huge mountains. They are huge! It s really interesting to see how big. But I don't recommend due to mosquitoes and you have to walk through a slopping mess to be able to walk on themRead more

Totally amazing spot, seems like we are on top of the world. Free site in National Forest. Next camper is a mile away. Lots of wild flowers. Watched a big storm pass us by. The elevation here is actually about 9100 feet.Read more

After sleeping at 9100 feet. I got altitude sickness, so we had to find a lower elevation to stay at , in the mountains of Denver on a Friday night, That made for quite a day and night!!!!

Stopped by a roadside rest area that was more like a park, in Glenwood Canyon. Route 70 through the canyon was very scenic. It took 20 years to put the roads in. There is a lovely bike path, the railroad, and white water rafters. We stopped where the Colorado River meets the Eagle River and the water was extremely high.

Had a great sandwich at the Bluebird restaurant and went through the Doc Holiday museum, and had London Fog ice cream, which has Earl Gray tea in it so I'm going to go home and make some.Read more

Very turquoise. The hike 1 1/4 mile with a 1,000 foot rise was very steep and very rocky, but worth it. Lots of shade and a nice breeze. The last 1/8 mile was the steepest. Had to get tickets last winter because they sell out.

Had to get here early because first come first serve, the larger trailer spots are gone by about 1PM.
$7.50 for a night and we could fill up with water. Very quiet and unusual scenic spot right beside the Park.Read more

I enjoyed this 2 mile walk because it was a pleasant walk and was very scenic, so I did it 2 days. Saw a hummingbird. 2 videos
TravelerWalking on lava rock is very hard on shoes. They have very sharp edges all over. In 1960, while working as a summer forestry student in Arizona, I wore the bottoms off a pair of work boots in two months.

Hiking through a lava field and a lava tunnel was interesting. It was like walking through some abstract artwork. Sometimes the fields looked like huge splats of wet mud. I was glad I had flashlight, only one small area was dark, gloves, and hiking shoes.Read more

Very interesting, the tunnel is at angle the air drafts keep it about 29° or less all year round.
About 210,000 pounds of ice were removed and commercially sold. Olympic skaters used to skate here.

Hiked by Snake River and got to see the endangered American White Pelican, and some fish.
It is amazing how people were willing to risk their lives to take the Oregon Trail to the west. We saw where they crossed the river here in their wooden wagons pulled by horses, and it was really amazing.Read more

A lot of the drive through Oregon has been boring. Today we drove along a very scenic 15 mile (terminal basin) lake that was very scenic, and I wondered why it wasn't full of boats, and lined with resorts.
Lake Albert is very alkali due to sodium carbonate. It is so salty, that even flies don't use the water. You can see the rocks look like someone painted them white. On some rocks the crystalized mineral crust is several inches thick. The few tufa mounds reminded me of the tufas we kayaked through at Mono Lake a few years ago. Birds along the Pacific Flyway go through here during migration, but the Lake is really drying up and getting saltier.
History of the lake behind with volcanic lava. Ice Age water, and shifting fault lines. The lake is on the Oregon fault line, and has the most prominent fault scarp in North America.
The orange lichens on the rocks were interesting.

As soon as I stepped out of the truck I could smell roses and pine. We had a lovely 2 hour hike by a rushing stream. There were lots of butterflies.
