Boat didn't get away till just after 5pm so we are officialy heading to the open seas yeeaaahhh.
Where ever we went we were complimented on our jackets.
The snow capped mountain in the last pic is in the direction we are heading.

  • Still paddlin

    May 3 in the United States ⋅ ❄️ 1 °C

Still heading into Tracy Arm Ford and getting quite chilly and starting to see more glasier ice coming down now imagine how cold the water is if the ice is still frozen.
Last few pics are near the head of the river and glasier which is in between the two huge mountains and they say it is 500mtrs thick and over 3kms long yes absolutely stunning shame we could not get closer but the local laws will not allow it as could be dangerous.Read more

  • Around the gold rush town

    May 3 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Still more pics of the town on our tour.Driver turned out to be a thespian and put on plays, magic shows and recites poems from the early 1800s quite the character he is.
They get all their supplies by barge and railway and as soon as they are off loaded the shops are nearly bare of products.
He said they pay $5.00a gallon for fuel compared to our $8.00 gallon and they believe their paying too much for it wow when we told him our prices his mouth was agape and he said he ain't complaining about it any more. The cost of food Doz eggs $12.00,pint carton milk 8.00 and meat up to $20.00 a pound.
Hospital is one building and has up to 2 permanent nurses and 6 on call who help out ,1 dentist, fire chief, police seargent, and dispensary (chemist) and 4 ambulances to which the nurses drive, now if you get sick they will stabilise you so you can be air lifted out of town to the hospital probably vancouver.
    Very interesting town.

  • Blowing in the wind yoouucchh.

    May 4 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 3 °C

OK we have docked in Skagway the town of the gold rush in the 1800 to the early 1830 when gold ran out. Most building in town are reflection on that era and its stepping back in time.
The early pioneers had to trek either by boat and canoes or overland for over a 1,000miles to get here for the gold and they had to bring all their provisions with them as well. Most of them perished in the wild ,alk about hard slogging and trekking the wilds of Alaska.
The first pic is of the big landslide that happened 5yrs ago hitting a cruise ship in the dock and blocking the river for 3 weeks and ship and passengers had to wait for slide to be cleared before it could sail out and get passengers of and get repaired, they stopped all river traffic completely till they cleared the blockage.
The outside temp is 12c but wind is just above 6km hr and goes literally right through us.
Skagway is a town that solely relies on tourism to survive and in a few weeks will be a stop of point for up to 15 cruise ships and 20 motor coach tours that come here for the day.
First pics are of the dock and board walk to buses etc the rest are of the town and buildings, take note of snow plough and old Casey Jones locomotive that use to clear snow of the line up to 15years ago then got retired for a up to date locomotive train.
The other pics are the town and most of the pics are of buildings that have been here since the 1800.
The building in pic7 has the facades done in driftwood that has been collected from the river that has floated down from the upper reaches of the river fantastic architecture in the town.

  • Wet and very cold Janeau

    May 5 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 4 °C

We docked in this big town that has rain nearly 365 days a year and yep it was light but wet and chilly.
Today we set out to the top of the big hill that is 1,800 ft above the town and turns out it is higher than Empire state building NY and the Eiffel tower Paris very impressive in deed.
The ride up in the tram car was exilerating as we were at 45 deg going up and down but very smooth till you get near the top it got a bit blowey and it swayed a little but wasn't to bad.
The view from the top is impressive to say the least, you can walk the trail to the glacier if you want we didn't and found outlater it was very slippery and a bit dangerous to walk it.

  • Returning to earth for retail therapy.

    May 5 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 4 °C

We slid back to earth and started our shopping for momentos for us and the family.
We met a store owner and she said it has been raining non-stop for 4 weeks so far.
And today they are expecting five cruise ships in today and for the rest of the week four a day must inject thousands into their economy.
The pics of the native massage from local tribes and priced at $3,000 and up but truly impressive work, plate is done with native grass and dyed the colours by crushing rocks to get colour it was $2,000.
The other pics are of wildlife shot by locals both bears were over 8ft tall on hind legs and the moose was around same height very impressive size.Imagine running into them on your stroll down a path or track scary indeed.Did our retail and came back to ship to warm up and eat, pizza for lunch and a Pepsi very nice

  • Arrived in Ketchikan

    May 6 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Had a leisurely cruise to this quaint little river town.Woke to clear sky and sunshine after very overcast skies yesterday.
This town is the home of the totem poles in Alaska and in the pics 4,5,6 is where the totems are thought of and carved by master carver and the apprentices, they take up to a year to do some even longer depending on the story they are going to represent.
The only one who knows what the story or tale is going to look like is the carver. They make a template as in pic4 and 5 which is placed onto the redwood log then the template is transferred to the log.
The tools they use to carve out the totem are all hand made and each is different to the others. You can see the tools in pic 6 behind the new totem.
The totem in pic 5 was carved in 1899 and the red wood is used because it rots from the inside out and takes years to consume the totem.Once it is carved and painted they are stood up by hand and are not touched or repainted ever, the paint on the one in pic 5 has not been touched at all absolutely amazing to see.

  • Stunning totems

    May 6 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

These are more of the totems in a small park with the traditional tribal meeting place behind in pic 7 .
They all tell a story and if you see the two beside each other at the entrance to the park in pic 15 and 7 they are to ward off evil and protect all other totems.
Pic 8 is of Pres Lincoln to signify his interactions with the Indigenous tribes in Alaska,it was carved in his honour as appreciation from the native people.
Pic 14 is of a lost son depicting a raven on top looking to the heavens and seeing if he was there and two tribes men on the bottom searching for him on the ground and forest.
So every one is different depending on the story

  • Totem story of ravens

    May 6 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

OK these three poles with ravens on the top and a boy down below denote a little boy who was lost in the area one crow is looking to the heavens searching to see if he is there, the other is looking toward the water searching to see if he is there and the last is looking in the forest searching to see if he is there .
This is the story these totems tell and their meaning.

Bags all packed taged and outside door forcollection and ready for us to just get on shuttle and go.
Here we are coming into Victoria in British Coumbia ( Canada) for what was to be a short stop but alas the gods decided to make very rough weather so the harbour pilot has decided to veto docking so now it's onto Seattle for all.
