  • Hahndorf - surprise!

    October 8 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

A lovely couple of days in Hahndorf, except for the huge hill that went forever on the way in. Poor Anne's car was not playing nicely, so she got down to 30kph. At least it was a dual carriageway so she not holding anyone up. It was a bit of a shock driving through Hahndorf- so busy!
Graham was very happy as there is a national Monara event in town and the caravan park was a free car show.
Pete's $6 Temu temperature gun was used to fix a $200k car!
Once we set up the vans we convinced Anne to walk to the lake near the cabins to look at baby wallabies, and who should pop out of a cabin but Steph, Vicki and Steve (Wallys instead of wallabies). Anne was so shocked she threw a full dog poo bag at Pete. Priceless! A lovely surprise for Anne, and so lovely for the rest of us to have them join us for a while.
Hahndorf has so many wonderful shops and restaurants. More eating! I had the best apple strudel of my life. Had a great night chilling on Steph, Vicki and Steve's balcony. A few drinks and lots of laughs. 😀

  • Dimboola Day 2

    October 7 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Day 2 in Dimboola we expected to be very quiet, as everything is closed on Wednesday.
We headed to the Pink Lake to see if there was anything pink about it. Yes, it was! How amazing. Graham finally got his drone up and working. Check out the photos. What was not amazing was the overseas tourists who threw a plastic drink bottle in the lake and watched it float away. Please don’t come here again.

Had a coffee and checked out a few of the shops in town that were open (for a Wednesday). Everyone has jumped on the Imaginarium / Steam Punk theme and even the boring old gift shop is quirking it up. Shame the collectibles and antique shops were closed as they had quite eclectic displays in their windows.

Pete and Graham had a good chat with the gift shop owner. The old theatre has been purchased and there was a recent fundraiser by the new owner who does fantastic impersonations and had played in a few bands around Sydney and Melbourne. He has big plans for the theatre once it is renovated.

The town has an old Holden dealership and workshop that looks like it is from the 70s. It has been closed for over 20 years. The owner shut the doors one day and has left tools, car parts and car body parts where they were the day he walked out. There are even two old cars still on display. People have tried to get him to sell but he won’t have it. The strangest thing! If we had been in town longer Graham would have loved to hunt him down, even if it was just to clean the showroom windows.

We went back to our cars, which were parked outside the closed Imaginarium, to head back to the caravan park. Next thing the door opens and the owner pops his head out to see if we wanted to come in for a look. I was in the door before he finished the sentence. The owners are a gay couple from Melbourne who purchased the old bank in town and renovated. The bank is a two storey building with soaring ceilings and the attached bank manager’s house out the bank.

It was like stepping into a wonderland. Jamie and Chan have completely renovated the bank themselves and have turned it into a quirky gift shop and homewares downstairs, complete with life sized stuffed giraffe, and accommodation (even quirkier) upstairs. We got a full tour of the building including the old safe and a look at the underground wine cellar which was once the vault. My favourite room was the library; chandeliers, Chesterfield lounges, books to the ceiling and full of art. The rooms upstairs are all themed. So over the top – I loved it! Photos can’t capture the detail. Just wow.

Jamie and Chan created the Steam Punk Festival. This year they had 3,000 people and next year expecting 4,000. Dimboola is a small town – no idea where all these people stay. Jamie refused to take credit for the town’s revitalisation, but everyone in town spoke about the closed shops before they arrived and how many have opened recently, with more shops due to open later in the year. We have seen many dying towns on our travels but Dimboola is the opposite.

Jamie suggested we pop over the road to see if his friend was at the new microbrewery, which is due to open later in the year. He was there, and invited us in for a look. It’s an old factory workshop and the owner has done all the renovations himself. His wife has hunted far and wide to fill the place with art deco furniture. Once again – wow! And, once again, photos don’t do it justice. I can’t wait to see the finished project.

Victorian roads are absolutely shite, but we will definitely make a return trip to Dimboola.
Finished the night with some more Uno abuse and possum spotting. People must think we hate each other.

  • Dimboola day 1

    October 6 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Our next stop was Dimboola (Tom Dooley to Pete). This has been the most surprising town of our trip by a country mile, but in a good way.

The drive from Echuca was interesting. We like to give Anne the full driving experience, so on this leg we were driving down a single land road. Not as in single lane in each direction, but a single lane to be shared by traffic going in each direction. Fun!! We stopped at Charlton Bakery for the best meat pie of the trip so far. Also drove through the town of Minyip, where The Flying Doctors, The Dry (starring Eric Bana) and The Dressmaker were filmed. We met the old school principal of Minyip School when The Flying Doctors was filmed. All the students were signed up to Actors Equity. Money was paid to the school which would pay for excursions for the kids.

Finally arrived in Dimboola. Most of the town is shut Tuesday and Wednesday. We are here Tuesday and Wednesday. We left Pete and Graham finishing the vans setup so that the girls could walk into town to the Forbidden Forest shop, as it was due to close and was, of course, closed on Wednesday. Fabulous shop full of lots of puzzles, fairies, gnomes, Christmas and steam punk themed items.

We met a few locals and everyone told us the same story; that the town has been revived by the arrival of a Melbourne couple who bought the old bank building, converted it into the Imaginarium and have completely changed the town. But of course the Imaginarium is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. So we were expecting a dull day on Wednesday.

Spent the evening abusing each other over a game of Uno No Mercy and spotting possums. See if you can spot the babies. Also look for the photo of Stevie with her namesake.

  • Echuca here we come

    October 2 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Graham and I headed to Griffith (about 45 mins away) for the day whilst Ruby was still in hospital. We got a message from Gail saying she was heading off to Melbourne to fly home for Bri, so sadly we didn't get to say goodbye in person. Went to the Visitor Centre to find out the many sights to see in Griffith, when the vet rang to say Ruby would benefit from seeing you both. So back in the car and back to Leeton.
Poor Rubes was crying the whole time and trying to head out the door so the decision was made to send her home with us and we would find a vet in Echuca if need be. One sick but happy puppy came back with us. Hooked up the van and off to Echuca. We think she dodged a bullet there.

  • Grong Grong / Narrandera / Leeton

    Sep 29–Oct 1 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Ok so we had a bit of the good, the bad and the ugly while we stayed in Grong Grong.
The location was wonderful and sitting by the campfire at night looking at the stars was just the best. The flies during the day would pick you up and carry you away. Australia!
We spent a day wandering around the nearest town of Narrandera (Nerandipity to Pete). Such a lovely little town with information boards on every corner. I love learning about the history of the towns. There is a Royal Dalton Hankinson Memorial Fountain in town, which was donated to the town as a First World War memorial.
It's a Royal Dalton ceramic fountain and only one of two in the world; the other in Pakistan. Sadly in the 1970s some asshole vandalised the fountain but it has been restored. We can't have nice things, can we. I also loved that the local blacksmith would fill in as the dentist!
Night two we cooked damper and stew over the camp fire. Fabulous meal. Unfortunately after dinner Ruby was quite ill so we had to do a dash to the after hours vet in Leeton. Gave her a couple of jabs and sent us on our way.
Our last day in Grong Grong was Julie's birthday. Hooray! And we finally got a group shot in our jackets. That was the good news. Bad news was Ruby was worse and admitted to the vet hospital. The rest of the crew went successfully koala spotting whist Graham and I spent the day in Leeton. We had a birthday dinner for Jules at the Grong Grong Royal Hotel (the Grongy). I love the story of this pub. A hundred odd of the local community all put in $5k each to purchase and renovate the pub, so now they have a community pub to share. It was pretty busy on the Wednesday night we were there and the food and atmosphere was great. A real feel good story. And the final story to top the night off was Pete managing to get another truckie to blow his airhorns. They must think he is a very large kid!
Ruby had to stay a couple of nights in the hospital. They did an endoscopy and were expecting to do surgery after a couple of nights, so everyone else headed off to Echuca and Graham and I shifted the van to Leeton to be closer to her. It was a very sad couple of nights without her. But life doesn't stop lifeing when you travel.

  • Now this is living

    September 28 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We have moved to our next destination in Grong Grong. Stopped in Parkes on the way for a nosy around. Nice little town. Had a bit of fun with a couple of big rigs on the way here. We always chat to them and help them get around us, which most are really appreciative of. We got one big rig around and then he called his mate through as he was coming over a crest, but a car had pulled out of a driveway. Oops. We pulled over, so did the car and the rig sailed through the middle. They were very apologetic!
We are camping on a large property on the bank of the Bundidgerry Creek (which is more like a river). The owner mucked up our booking so he wasn't able to put us on the main camp-site. We are all on our own on a secluded part of the creek (well apart from some sheep). How lucky are we. This place is so beautiful and peaceful. The dogs are in and out of the water. Some of the dogs (not naming anyone) are living their best life eating sheep shit.
Pete cooked ribs over the open fire last night. Heaven.

  • Parkes day trip

    September 27 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

It's our last day in Parkes so we headed out for a day trip. First stop was the CSIRO Observatory, better known as the dish. This was so so interesting. It was free to go into the centre to learn all about the dish construction and operation. There are too many interesting facts to list here but I would recommend a quick google search. Even better, come visit.
Next stop was Yeoval, which is where Banjo Patterson spent a few years as a child. We met a couple from Sydney who had grown up in the area and still owned a bit of property in town, which was constantly being broken in to by local kids. It was once a thriving town but is slowly dying. It had a nice statue of Banjo and a statue of his hat, and not much more going for it.
From there we went to Molong, also linked to Banjo Patterson. This town was the opposite of Yeoval. Lots of shops and people about. Speaking of shops, we went to a store that sold mens hats, menswear and men's gifts. Fantastic little store, with a fantastic gay owner. Dave didn't realise this, and came into the store acting gay as you please and gave Pete a good old gay hug right in front of the owner. Oh David!
Back to the Showgrounds for another fabulous meal courtesy of Julie. We really are eating well!
I did forget to mention the first day we arrived that Graham and I popped in to a pub for a quick drink. An old man on a walking stick came by and patted Ruby. When he learnt her name he belted out a couple of verses of Ruby Tuesday, followed by Waltzing Matilda. We clapped so he kept going. Boy he could sing. He told us he had sung at the Grand Ol Opry in Nashville. He also could tell you the winner of the Melbourne Cup for any year. One year we gave him he got to 7th place. What a character. Thanks for the entertainment Stanley.

  • Parkes

    September 26 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

We are now in Parkes, where we are staying at the showground. We walked into town this morning for a look around and shop, as we do. There are so many lovely houses in Parkes. It's a bit like Subiaco but with wide streets and greener gardens. Graham was happy as there are a couple of good second hand shops in town. Also lots of references to Elvis, as they have an annual Elvis Festival. Well he was the King, after all.
After a wander around we found a pub to watch the AFL grand final. I was the sole voice for Freo. I am sorry that I didn't cheer loud enough for them to win. And even more sorry for my Docker fan friends. Next year!
The Showgrounds are pretty busy, so there is never a dull moment. There are about 20 vintage tractors that take off every morning for a fund-raising drive. Graham is like a little kid watching them head out. One driver had his dog in a cage at the back of his cab, but another driver picked up his Jack Russell to wave at Graham from the air conditioned cab as he drove past. I know which dog is the farm dog.
We also are near the trotting track so there are a few horses doing laps in the morning. Unfortunately for poor Dave and Gail all the hay here has given them both terrible hayfever. Not much fun for them.

  • Dunedoo

    September 24 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

A quick overnighter in Dunedoo on our way to Parkes. Had a short stop in Coolah on the road to test another bakery. It passed with flying colours. Wish us good luck fitting into our clothes when we get home!
We also continued our tradition of testing the local pub when we got to Dunedoo. Also passed with flying colours.
And the third tradition was upheld yesterday after dinner. I'm going to rename this trip the Drumstick Tour.
A nice relaxing day yesterday with lots of laughs, thanks to the boys.

  • Tamworth day 2

    September 21 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Another beautiful day in Tamworth. Spent the morning doing bulk laundry, which as luck would have it was next door to a bakery. From there we headed to Oxley Lookout for a view over Tamworth. And then, by some miracle, we ended up at the Tamworth Hotel for lunch.
The day ended with the boys making pizza. Graham has the dough making down pat now. Good job lads!

  • Tamworth

    September 20 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

So here we are in Tamworth. This is a great town. It's the size of a city but with the feel of a country town; and everywhere around town are tributes to Australian country music artists.
We are staying at a farm stay just out of town. We are loving the views and the horses. Not loving the rooster. But the best thing about our stay is the owner, who has quite a posh accent but talks like a farmer. She told the neighbour's son she would get her shotgun and shoot his family first then their pig dogs who attacked her pig, because the boy was laughing (all in her posh accent). She thinks the boy is in therapy. 🤣
The dogs are loving it here. They have their own paddock to play in and horses to look at.
We finally got to a weekend market. It has only taken eight weeks for the planets to align. Had to stop every few minutes for the dogs to be patted. It's like travelling with royalty.
Finished the day with a Sunday session listening to live music. Always a great finish to the day.

  • Moree Retirement Village

    September 18 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Sorry, I have been MIA for over a week and now I have to catch up. That will test the brain cells!
Another awful trip on Qld roads. You could really tell the difference once we crossed the border into NSW.
We have just spent two nights in Moree, which is memorable for two things; the artesian thermal baths in the caravan park and the locals.
This has been the most intimate caravan park we have stayed in. By intimate I mean you will be inches from your neighbour's van. But at least we got to make new friends.
Because of the thermal pools the park is full of older folk. Remember the pool scene from the movie Coccoon? Yeah, it's a bit like the before scene. We are all feeling very young staying here.
Walked around town yesterday. Ruby had a chihuahua rush out to have a go at her. Poor Rubes was getting swung around on her lead trying to evade the vicious little jerk. If I am being attacked late at night I'd rather have a chihuahua than a rottweiler as a bodyguard.
Dave and Graham met some of the lovely locals. One called them poofters (I blame that on Dave's moustache and the fact he used the ladies toilets in 1770). Dave said hello to another local and he said, and I quote, "I will smash your head in you c****s". Charming. Dave made a new best friend at the pub last night with one of the local drunks. He is like a magnet.
Pete is on suicide watch today because the Dockers made the grand final.
But for all that Moree was actually a nice town. And I managed to get a bit more shopping squashed into the van. Winning!
    Off to Tamworth today. Yeehaw.

  • Reuben's Lagoon Chinchilla

    September 15 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Wow that was a horrid drive here. And when you thought it couldn't get any worse, it did. It was one of our longer drives as well, so not a fun day.
Did manage to stop in the lovely town of Goomeri on the way. One of the little gems you find on your travels.
Luckily we were staying in a very peaceful property just outside of Chinchilla. It was my turn to light the camp-fire using a flint. Not my finest hour. And yes, it did feel like an hour. No video to upload as it is too big a file.
Pete cooked pasta at our kitchen and Graham said he has been to cleaner murder scenes.
Not much water in the lagoon, but enough for the kangaroos to come in morning and night for a drink.
A quiet town, but they did have a lovely dress shop, where I purchased a lovely dress. 😁

  • Let's Partay

    September 12 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

So today we all came together to celebrate the love of Jodes and Casey, and the friendship and 60th birthdays of Anne and Jodes. Jodie and Casey have been married a few years, but this was a great opportunity to finally celebrate their wedding with their friends and family.
We had Anne's Zali and Harvey, our Zahli and Jodes and Casey's Cora all at the party, as well as Jodie's kids from overseas and around the state. Very special.
What a great night it was!! Well the bits I remember anyway. We danced the night away to the band, there was a fire dancer and at the end of the night there was some dreadful karaoke.
Thanks Jodes and Case for an epic night. Love you guys. X

The other exciting thing is we are now in the hometown of Jodes and Casey, as well as having Anne's kids and grandies and Steph, Karen and Terri join us. Party!
Unfortunately the rain has also come. Not to be deterred, we headed to Australia Zoo with our (adult) kids.

    September 8 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Had a quick two night stay at Rainbow Beach. There's a really cute town here and a beautiful beach. Our caravan park backs on to the estuary. Fabulous sunset views. Unfortunately there are midgies, birds that sound like they are being murdered in the middle of the night and a lace monitor lizard that climbed the tree over Anne's van.
Had dinner at the Rainbow Beach Hotel and I found the gaming room. I put in $5 and won $63 with absolutely no idea what I was doing. Beginners luck.

If you stay in a bush camp there may be snakes. I don't like snakes. There is a photo of a snake that was near the toilets last night. I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing that it's not there this morning. Apparently it was a very beautiful and harmless carpet snake. Apparently.

  • 1770 Eco Camp

    September 4 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

So here we are at our next location - 1770 Eco Camp Agnes Water. Once again this is a pearler of a spot, thanks to the numerous YouTuber travellers we have followed.
Set up camp last night, then headed to the communal area to watch the Hawks v Dockers semi final. Before we went Pete drank a bottle of wine or so. Needless to say it was the most entertaining footy game I have watched in a long time! Pete fell asleep at half time so we were all mean and told him Freo won when we woke him at the end of the night (Hawks won - yay!!). Pete thought it was Christmas when he checked the scores this morning.
The best thing about this camp is the smell of lemon myrtle and eucalypt in the morning, plus the sound of kookaburras. By the end of the stay they may be the worst thing about this camp as they are quite vocal!
We headed up the top of the hill for yoga this morning. Dave and Gail took one for the team and took the bush path up the hill, but the rest of us drove. We were grateful we had after they described the climb. Yoga was so fantastic! It was on an outdoor deck looking at the mountains in the distance, with meditation at the end. Bliss!
This afternoon we had a drive around Agnes Water and 1770. Lots of lovely homes but quite busy. Managed to find a dog beach, so we have some very exhausted but happy pooches now.

  • Great Keppel Island

    September 2 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Had the loveliest day at Great Keppel today (this sure beats working).
There was a bit of fun loading the dogs on the ferry. Poor Peppa was determined not to climb the stairs onto the ferry, but thanks to one of the crew she was hoisted on board, like it or not. Was a lovely calm trip over. Stevie was terrified, Pep was still traumatised by the onboard process, Ruby was very excited and Mace just calmly took it all in, like she does with every situation.
Great Keppel was not what I imagined at all. A cafe and bar and not much else, apart from a beautiful beach. Really peaceful - so my type of vibe.
To get to other beaches you take a hike through the middle of the island. Sounds like fun, let's do that. It's not fun. The start of the hike had a danger sign, but of course we ignored that.
After half hour or so of up and down the mountain most of us waved the white flag. Dave and Graham continued on to go snorkelling at Monkey Beach and the rest of us turned back. Ruby is such a loyal dog that she headed off ahead with Anne, Gail , Pep and Mace without a backward look. I could have fallen off the side of the mountain for all she cared.
Anyway we all made it safely back. The boys had a great snorkel, I had my first ocean swim (was lovely) of the trip, the dogs had a run and swim and everyone got to relax at the pub. Wins all around I think.
Funny story. There was a man at the caravan park with a baby in a pram and a toddler. He was trying to get the toddler to go with him but there was a firm no. After a while I went over to see if I could help. Turns out the toddler wasn't his, he didn't even know his name but didn't want to leave him. I found out the description of the van for the little boy and wandered up to ask if they had a son. Yep they both said and pointed behind them to a child. "Do you have another boy?" A flash of recognition past over their faces and they both jumped up. This kid must be trouble if his parents can't remember they have him!
We are all a bit tired from today's adventures so might be an early night. Famous last words!

    September 1 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Have had a couple of lazy days in Kinka and wandering around Yeppoon. Yeppoon is lovely but a very touristy town with some stupidly expensive clothes shops. I still managed to support the local economy.
Graham's uncle Dave came for an overnight stay, which was lovely to spend some time with him.
Over the road from the caravan park is Kinka Beach, so the dogs are loving a 6am run at the beach. Such a lovely way to start the day! I am getting slack at taking photos so will take plenty tomorrow at Great Keppel Island.
I don't know how we will ever cope returning to normal life.

    August 30 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We spent a couple of days on the road, with a quick overnighter in Muckadilla and another at Theodore.
Camped out the back of the Mucka Pub. It's free camping as long as you pop in for a drink or meal. We did both, plus bought shirts, so we definitely paid for our camp-site. The pub is in good standing financially until our next return.A great pub in the middle of BFN. Muckadilla is mentioned in "I've been everywhere man" - google it.
Stopped in Roma on the way to Theodore and poor Pete was dog sitter while the girls shopped. Graham and Dave owe him big time!!
Last night we camped at Theodore Showgrounds. The boys decided to take a quick walk to "town". There is only one thing in town and that's a pub. You can I only imagine how thrilled us girls were when they came home in the dark.
We had quite an adventurous drive over Mount Morgan today. It was 40kph all the way winding down the mountain, but oh what a view. Anne's view is pretty much static, being the rear of our van, but at least now she has an emu sticker to look at.
And now we are in paradise. Kinka, which is near Yeppoon. We haven't left the caravan park yet, but we may never leave.
