Our Big Neighbour, Indonesia

Australians don't know enough about Indonesia. I certainly don't. So when our Indonesian/ Australian friend Budi said he was doing research in Makassar, I jumped at the chance to go. I also plan to see Bali with my sister Carol who often goes there. Leggi altro

    Kaki Lima (5 feet)

    Kaki Lima means 5 feet and is the name for these traditional portable street food stalls.
    It's a play on words because they are 5 feet long and have 5 feet ie. 2 human feet, 2 wheels and a support leg on the cart.
    You can get just about any food from these carts, from soups, satays, juices and desserts. They appear at night on many street corners then disappear again leaving the footpaths free during the day. The closest we get is food trucks but our health requirements are much stricter.    Leggi altro

    I was sitting with Budi and Mira at Budi's favourite Pisang Epe (Makassin Fried Banana) stall complaining it was really hard to find traditional Makassin culture. I said it was not celebrated like Torajan culture. Then 3 buskers came to the stall and started playing Indonesian songs including Makassin songs. The crowd started joining in singing and jumping about.
    So there Laurie, you were wrong. You just have to be in the right place.    Leggi altro

    Almost a ghost town.

    Indonesians are sensible, just like Aussies. Give them a public holiday in the middle of the week and they take the whole week off.
    Tomorrow is Idul Fitri, the end of Ramadan and a public holiday. It's like our Christmas. Everybody goes home to their village to see their families.
    So today just about everything is closed. Even the beggars and bentok (motor rickshaw) drivers are on holidays. I can walk down the street without being hassled. The only busy place is the port to the offshore island villages.
    I walked to the Museum of Makassar even though I knew it would be closed. Then got a pedal rickshaw back to the hotel as it was only one around. They're not really designed for big bule (foreigners).    Leggi altro
