We were up close and personal with the elephants today at the Elephant Sands Camp. They were jockeying for position at the waterhole, pushing and shoving and sounding off to express their displeasure. There was a warthog and her baby trying to get near for a drink too but they didn’t stand a chance. The restaurant and swimming pool were meters away from the watering hole and the elephants provided the afternoon entertainment. We were not permitted to return to our rooms after sunset without taking the shuttle as many of the elephants roamed freely between the tents and cabins. Going to and fro in the daylight was nerve racking enough. The other special treat was watching the yellow weaver birds flit in and out of their nests in the nearby trees. Our rooms were large permanent tents with a shower, mosquito nets over the beds, a fan and a large veranda and couch for viewing the elephants. It was wonderful to sleep outside and try to play the guessing game as to what was passing by the tent.Read more
