• Fun, Food & Frolicking in San Sebastián

    October 1 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Our group joined up with a passionate local guide named Iri this morning for a 3.5 hour pintxos adventure which took us through two iconic neighbourhoods of San Sebastián-trendy Gros and the historic Old Town. We made 3 stops in each area, sampling a total of 5 savoury dishes and 1 sweet dish, as well as several drink specialties such as local wine, beer and cider. We even enjoyed a bonus round by getting cheesecake to go at the most famous Basque Cheesecake establishment called La Vina. This place is rumoured to use the original Basque cheesecake recipe. Iri taught us the art of txikiteo (bar hopping) and really helped us internalize the rich Basque history and how the neighbourhood still uses food and drink as a way to link to the past. She shared their culture and traditions and even taught us a few Basque words. We went to family run bars and Michelin- recommended spots where locals go. It was the best food tour we have ever taken. Each stop was completely different and some involved our participation, such as making our own pintxo called a Jilda and lining up to scoop up a glass of cider from the barrel when Iri opened the tap and yelled “Txotx” for free refills. The food, drinks and cultural lessons were all wonderful, and we didn’t want the fun to end, but the beach was calling and so we went on our merry way to further explore this charming town.Read more
