  • Morocco’s Stunning Coastal Fortress

    30 ottobre 2024, Marocco ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

Morocco’s spectacular Atlantic Ocean coastal town of Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, has a rich history. The town was established in 1760 by Mohamed III, who wanted to develop the area as a naval base. The town, harbour and fortifications were all built in the European fortress style. The inner walls of the Medina, which is a great place to wander through the twisting alleys, are more typical of Islamic style. Today the location attracts artists and hippies, and thanks to the strong winds, it is a great destination for kite surfers.Leggi altro

  • A Stroll Through the Medina

    31 ottobre 2024, Marocco ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

The Medina is the name of the old city in Marrakech. Surrounded by some 19 kilometres of ramparts built in 1122, the Medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and bears the name of the entire historic center of the city. Inside the Medina there are endless activities to do such as visiting palaces, mosques, a traditional Hamman, gardens, museums and a plethora of souks. The main square, Jemaa El Fna is a beehive of activity at dusk with snake charmers, street performers, musicians and every type of street food and craft vendor.Leggi altro

  • Sundown in Marrakesh

    31 ottobre 2024, Marocco ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

This famous minaret was completed around 1195. It is 77 meters in height and no other buildings in Marrakech are allowed to be taller. Thankfully and curiously it remained sound despite the recent earthquake that damaged buildings in the vicinity. Our guide, Hicham, brought us to a rooftop restaurant right beside the minaret to enjoy the sight and consume more delicious Moroccan food. We are totally spoiled.Leggi altro

  • Marrakech By Bicycle Part 1

    1 novembre 2024, Marocco ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

We spent a harrowing but exhilarating morning seeing Marrakech by bicycle (22.5 kms/ 3.5 hours). It was a full cultural immersion as we explored life inside the Medina as well as the newer part of the city. The bike tour operator, an NGO called Pikala, has an interesting story and though I feared for my life as we wound our way through the alleys of the Medina and the busy streets of the city, I would not have wanted to miss this culturally rich experience. We had three excellent stops which included a visit to a mosaic craftsman, a baker inside the Medina where dough and other baked goods are brought daily by local families to be baked and a local Hamman where we saw the back end of how a Hamman works and where the pipes of water are heated up and locals can use the ashes from the fire to cook a tangier. At the end of the tour we had tea and sweets at the Picala Cafe as well as a vegan lunch.Leggi altro

  • Marrakesh by Bicycle Part 2

    1 novembre 2024, Marocco ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Each neighbourhood in the Medina had a bakery and a Hamman and both are very important elements in their culture. It was truly fascinating to learn about them firsthand and witness them in action. The mosaic craftsman is a skill that is usually passed down from father to son and takes many years to master. In the new part of the city we passed by the Kings Palace that was both vastly huge and vastly expensive looking. The rest was very modern with beautiful architecture.Leggi altro

  • Le Jardin Secret

    1 novembre 2024, Marocco ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

The focal points of Le Jardin Secret are its green spaces, today divided between the exotic garden and the Islamic garden. The exotic garden is home to plants that are rare in Northern Africa and come from various parts of the world, recalling the search for universality and the experimental nature of the great gardens of Marrakech. Historical nicknames for Marrakech include “rose among palm trees”, “oasis in the desert”, “ city of peace and the open air”, and “the red city”. Le Jardin Secret, recently reconstructed, is an oasis of peace, a place to shelter from the heat and chaos of the city. The shade of the trees, the gurgling of the fountains, the scent of the plants and the intimate nature of the enclosed space all favour leisure and contemplation. A perfect refuge for us after our harrowing bicycle ride!Leggi altro
