    October 10, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

After we had had our first bad experience at a motel (we got the last room available, which was very dirty, mouldy and dark), we had a lovely low budget breakfast at a park. We then headed to Augusta. The ultimate highlight was a very old railway track and bridge in the middle of the town, where we actually saw a cargo train passing. No bars, we were walking right next to it. The train takes around 10 to 20 minutes to pass, and in that time the traffic stands still.
In the afternoon the guys went to a shooting range. It is crazy how easy it is to go shooting, you just sign and get an AK even as a tourist. I finally had time to catch up with my diary. Our second highlight was Lidl, where we finally got some vegetables and decent prices.

On the way to Atlanta we went to Greenville, where we played Topgolf. We went for the game for dummies and for the Angry Birds version. We were all really bad at it, but we had a lot of fun. After the game we walked in the center of Greenville, which was very cute with a waterfall and a suspension bridge.Read more

We spent the weekend at Marco's sister, who is doing an internship and is living with other interns from Germany.
We went to "The Square", at the center of Gainesville, with some pubs and clubs around the main square. The whole place looked like the main square in Gilmore Girls, Halloween decoration everywhere, lights on the trees. People were driving around the square with tuned cars and motorbikes, people wearing crazy helmets and leather jackets.Read more

Marco's sister had birthday, and her flatmates had the idea of taking her to an amusement park. The moment we arrived I already have regretted going there, because all you could see were huge rollercoasters, which I'm not a fan of. After I had almost panicked out on the second, I actually had fun on the third one. Like everywhere else, everything had Halloween decoration, and they also had Oktoberfest, with a weird wannabe German show, which had nothing to do with Germany and was quite pathetic. We had a ride on an old wooden rollercoaster as well, which didn't look so safe at all, but everyone survived. Our favourite rollercoaster was the superman, where we were basically laying in the seat and were going upside down.
In the evening the Halloween lights went on and people dressed in scary costumes were shouting at people.

We got up early in the morning to go to a church service. The chances that it would be very touristic were fifty-fifty, as we found the recommendation for the gospel church in a travel guide as a "secret gem". It turned out to be an absolute hidden gem, we were almost the only non-poc. The church was right next to the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr and to a memorial center. Half of the people were dressed up very elegant, the other half was wearing college and fraternity tracksuits, as it was college day, so students from all over came to represent their college. Every one of them were called out loud. A labour union was also there, and there were several guests. Before the service the governor of Pennsylvania also held a speech. The service was very emotional and touching, people singing, cheering and clapping all the time. A newborn baby was also blessed during the ceremony. If church was like this in Hungary, I would go every week probably.
After dropping off Marco at the airport we went to the Coca-Cola museum, where we tried at least 30 different soft drinks from all over the world produced by Coca-Cola. The craziest was the plum Fanta from China, which tasted like BBQ sauce. At the end I was kinda sick and never wanted to see coke again.
We went to an observation deck and we walked around. The city was dead, only homeless people were walking around, and there was not much to see.

We prepared everything to be able to sleep in the car, got some air mats and sleeping bags and looked for a truck stop. We were freezing in the car, and there were no showers, so we just had a coffee to warm ourselves.
We went to the Country Music Hall of Fames and walked at the Honky Tonk Highway, full of pubs with live country music.

So we just drove to the mountains. We passed by some very touristic cities, theme parks and crazy attractions. We drove to the Smokey Mountains and did some hikes. After we drove through the scenic drive and had two small hikes on the Appalachian trail, but we were a bit afraid of the bears, because many signs were warning about them, and the day before we did see a bear family at Gatlinburg. • Washington DC

    October 18, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

After having breakfast infront of the Capitol (hummus with dill pickles, the worst), we checked it out from the inside. We went to the crypt, saw the statues representing the states, and the Frieze of American history in the rotunda. We were able to enter the senate and the house of representatives, where we had to leave all our stuff (wallet, electronic devices). We heard one of the guards told a story of the attack of the Capitol to some visitors.
We also visited the Library of Congress, the world's biggest library, a beautiful building. Then we walked through the whole National Mall, visiting the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the MLK memorial, and the White House. Washington DC turned out to be a very cool city to visit, with many interesting museums for free, but unfortunately we only had a little time, so we only made it to the National Museum of American History.

  • New York City

    Oct 19–25, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

After doing the impossible (getting to Jersey without having to pay tolls and finding a parking place that doesn't cost a fortune), we met another friend in the city, who came from Canada for the weekend. We walked through half Manhattan, went to the High Line, one of my favourite places in NYC. We were all dead so we went home to take a nap and a shower (which is incredibly nice after sleeping in the car for two days without a bathroom). We went to a bar in our neighborhood, made friends while playing billiard and got some recommendations for going out in Hoboken. After all the hate towards New Jersey, Hoboken was a very cool place and decided to go there every night instead of NYC.

On the second day we had some issues and we had to go to the doctor's but after we've been told that it would cost 120 $ we just left. I had lunch with my aunt in a very cool restaurant, with a beautiful view on the Brooklyn Bridge, and after that we took a ferry and enjoyed the view and the beautiful weather. At sunset we went to the One World Observatory, New York's highest building.

After a few days other friends joined us, we went to Central Park, to a musical at Broadway and also to the Edge observation deck. Our culinary highlight was a 99 cent pizza place and Rudy's bar, which had cheap beer and free hotdogs, best bar in NYC!

On Monday we took the ferry to Ellis Island to see the immigration museum. It was very interesting, we could walk through the whole process of arriving to NYC. A lot of pictures, interviews and belongings were shown. I filled out the entry test and as a single woman, I was denied entering the country. They had a huge archive where we looked up our ancestors, but only one of us found a relative arriving to Ellis Island.
After we went to Liberty Island, and visited the museum to see how the statue was made.

After staying at cheap inns we were very excited about going to a nice hotel at the shore, with a pool and a casino. Our room was upgraded, we were on the 27th level, but we looked quite ridiculous with our backpacks and plastic bags. The first thing in our fancy hotel room was to eat the cold rice we had cooked the day before with plastic cutlery out of the glass. Then we walked on the Boardwalk and went to the Hard Rock Casino. Hundreds of slot machines, blackjack tables everywhere, a lot of people sitting in front of the screens like zombies. Though after two rounds of roulette and blackjack we lost the money we were ready to lose, we had a lot of fun. Before leaving, we also had a swim in the ocean, which was quite cold, but we were all awake then, and had breakfast at the beach.Read more

Our first stop in Philly was at a college football game of Villanova Wildcats. After watching two quarters and the cheerleaders and the band at halftime, we left to King of Prussia, one of the biggest malls on the East coast, as the game was very long, and the mood in the stadium was not so crazy as expected.

At night we went to Walmart and we had a lot of fun doing the groceries with the electric carts.

    Oct 26–27, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

In the finish of the election campaign, the candidates came to Pennsylvania very often, so we were trying to find the possibility to get to one of the events. After a lot of research, we found out that Kamala Harris was going to be at a black church on Sunday just an hour before it started, so we rushed there. We were unsure about the information, as it was not confirmed, but there was a lot of police around and some streets were closed and we had to go through security once entering. The service started with one hour of singing, dancing and live music, which was again amazing, but also quite long and we were still not sure about being at the right place, but finally she was announced by the pastor.
People were super excited, applauding her and confirming every of her sentences, with some dissenting voices at some point.
Though her speech was not so impressive, it was quite cool to see her live.

After the church we went to the Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed, and also to the Congress. We checked out the Liberty Bell and had a Philadelphia cheese steak (a huge amount of meat with melted cheese in a bun). We walked around in the center, saw the city hall, a nice market place and a portal to London.
In the afternoon we went to the Eastern State Penitentiary, a huge and impressive jail, which back then established a totally new form of jail. Al Capone was one of the inmates. There were some very interesting exhibitions and statistics about crime rate and incarceration in the US compared to the rest of the world. I really wouldn't have thought that I could spend 2-3 hours in a jail and still not be bored, but the whole building and history was quite fascinating.

Besides the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Cleveland sign we didn't find many sights, even though we really tried.
The city was kind of dead, even on Halloween night, so we didn't really find a party and hanged out at a bar, so after all the haters were right about Cleveland.

We spent the last three days with Dang and Siggi in Chicago. We really liked the city, we walked all around the city, went up to an observation deck to see the city and the lake from above, walked at the pier and got soaked in the rain. We couldn't leave without trying the Chicago-style pizza (which is more like a pie) and Chicago-style hotdog, which has some vegetables in it. We went to a Chicago Bulls game (they lost of course, we must be very bad luck, as all the teams lost that we saw) and we tried metro above street level. We checked out the Tiffany Dome in the Chicago Cultural Center, and the Bean. On the last day we took Siggi and Dang to the airport and walked at a nice neighborhood with some Frank Lloyd buildings.
