    Chief Joseph battleground near here.
The trail of the Nez Perce people as they fought for their homeland and way of life is laid out in this over 1, 000 mile trail which ends near here at the site where Chief Joseph surrendered to the U S Army after holding them off for five days.
His people were old, young and women and he could not watch any more of their suffering so in spite of the fact they were only two days and forty miles from Canada where they were headed, he surrendered.
An excerpt from The Chief’s speech is posted on one of the photos here and it heart breaking .
