We rolled into the campground late in the afternoon, after the drive down from Arkaroola. The stunning scenery kept us entertained and we broke up the trip with a quick lunch stop at Chambers Gorge—definitely a spot for a campsite on our next adventure.
The next morning, we woke up a little too late to comfortably tackle the full St Mary Peak (Ngarri Mudlanha) circuit. So we decided to walk for three hours, see how far we could get, and then turn around.
The trail started gently enough, looping through the cypress pines on the flat floor of the Pound. But the landscape changed and before long, we were scrambling over loose rocks and pushing hard up a steep escarpment. By 1:00 PM, it was time to turn around .We stopped, soaked in the incredible panoramic views of the Pound, and were quite pleased to call it there and not have to push on for the next 2kms to the top; We didn't feel too disappointed because we reached the top in 2015 on our last visit.
