    On the road again

    ​Hit the road from Point Lonsdale right at the crack of dawn. It’s officially the first day of winter, and that means head north.
    As the sun was starting to come up the full moon was setting behind us.

    On to Peterborough

    Rainy road trip vibes today! ☔️ Quick lunch stop in Burra, wish we could've explored more of that interesting town. 🏞️ Now camped in Peterborough, and Di just set the bar HIGH with a delicious salmon and veggie dinner on white bean mash. 🍽️ What a start to our shared meals!Read more

    Arkaroola

    We drove along the Outback back hwy turning off at Copley to finally arrive at the ancient, jagged peaks of Arkaroola. This place feels like another planet—the rock formations are so craggy and dramatic, glowing with an intense orange-red hue in the late afternoon sun.
    We laced up the hiking boots for a couple of hikes within Arkaroola. Friday afternoon we tackled the Acacia Ridge walk. It was a steep, prickly climb, but the 360-degree views of the entire sanctuary were breathtaking thanks to the recent winter rains, the usually stark desert ranges are brushed with a surprising, vibrant layer of green not seen here since 1989.
    The next day we tackled the Bararranna Gorge Trail. The geology here is mind-boggling—walking past rock layers formed by melting icebergs 700 million years ago makes you feel incredibly small. The trail led into the towering walls of Bararranna Gorge and opened up to Stubbs Waterhole, which perfectly reflected the ghost gums against the blue sky.    Read more

    Wilpena Pound

    ​We rolled into the campground late in the afternoon, after the drive down from Arkaroola. The stunning scenery kept us entertained and we broke up the trip with a quick lunch stop at Chambers Gorge—definitely a spot for a campsite on our next adventure.
    ​The next morning, we woke up a little too late to comfortably tackle the full St Mary Peak (Ngarri Mudlanha) circuit. So we decided to walk for three hours, see how far we could get, and then turn around.
    ​The trail started gently enough, looping through the cypress pines on the flat floor of the Pound. But the landscape changed and before long, we were scrambling over loose rocks and pushing hard up a steep escarpment. By 1:00 PM, it was time to turn around .We stopped, soaked in the incredible panoramic views of the Pound, and were quite pleased to call it there and not have to push on for the next 2kms to the top; We didn't feel too disappointed because we reached the top in 2015 on our last visit.     Willow Springs

    Today was a great day. We did Skytrek, a 80km self-drive 4WD track on a working 70,000-acre sheep station called Willow Springs which is not far from Wilpena Pound. The whole loop is slow going and takes a solid seven hours.
    ​The driving itself was an absolute blast. We were navigating through everything: bouncing across rugged mountain valleys, crossing creeks lined with massive river red gums, and tackling some serious ascents and descents over multiple mountain ranges.
    ​We had a self-guided map, that was full of information about what the pastoral life out here is like. We passed old shepherd's huts in ruins, ancient aboriginal etchings, ochre cliffs, and working station stuff like windmills and mustering yards.
    ​The absolute highlight was the views. We stopped at Upalinna Lookout for the incredible panoramic view of Wilpena Pound, and another spot called 'Eagle’s View' that looks out over the entire Flinders landscape.
    And of course we finished the day off eating dinner by the camp fire under the stars with the crew....truly stunning 😍.    Read more
