We had only one chance and the weather had meant no balloons had gone up over the last week . We felt incredibly grateful that we got the go ahead for lift off. Over centuries, wind and water eroded the soft volcanic rock into these surreal shapes, while generations of people carved out cave homes, churches, and entire underground networks directly into the cliffs.
After about an hour in the air, our pilot brought us down to a smooth landing right on to the trailer, where we celebrated with a traditional post-flight glass of sparkling. Given the weather delays earlier in the week, getting up into the air felt like a massive win—and it ended up being the absolute highlight of the trip.
