    September 10 in Australia ⛅ 6 °C

MELBOURNE-BANGKOK-ISTANBUL-FRANKFURT. 36 hours to travel half way around the world. Have managed a few hours sleep and not fleeing to bad.
Food has been amazing on Turkish Airlines and enough to feed a small village. Photo is of our on- board chef, just a bit fancy. Looking forward to meeting up with our good friends Heidi and Jens who live about 2 hours from Frankfurt and where we will spend the next few days.Read more

  • Exploring Bad Friedrichshall

    September 12 in Germany ⛅ 25 °C

It was so great being greeted by Heidi and Jens the moment we stepped out of the airport! We jumped into the car and took off on the Autobahn toward their home, The autobahn has unrestricted speeds—watching the speedometer climb to 160 km/h while being overtaken by other cars. Just saying...glad Bob wasn't driving!
This is our second visit to this region and we have already explored the Motor museums ( Audi and Mercedes) that this area is famous for so in the afternoon we took a short trip over to the next town Bad Wimpfen. Wandering through its picturesque, winding cobblestone alleys, admiring the iconic half-timbered houses, and taking in views of the Blue Tower .
On Saturday morning we visited the
The Salt Mine (Salzbergwerk Bad Friedrichshall): We went down 180 meters underground into the historic salt mine. It was an incredible experience walking through the massive crystal chambers, watching the laser shows, and sliding down the underground mine slides.
Back above ground, we went to watch the Motor Man event, think tough mudder! Watching the racing and seeing crazy Germans push through the gruelling 18km mud and obstacle challenges, brought amazing atmosphere to Bad Friedrichshall. Feeling exhausted after watching the events we treated ourselves to the local speciality spaghetti ice cream. It's an iconic dish that mimics spaghetti.

  • Bavarian Breakfast to start the day.

    September 13 in Germany ☁️ 19 °C

Sunday Morning and Jen's schedule had us off to the local fire brigade for a traditional Bavarian breakfast of white sausage and pretzels. It was actually very tasty and off course washed down with a breakfast beer!
Next activity was to drive to nearby Heilbron and take cruise on the Neckar River, a tributary of the Rhine. Heidi and Jens Neighbours joined us. In Germany people tend not to move house very often, infact many houses are handed down through the generations. Heidi and Jens live in his Grandparents house. Their neighbours live together for many decades, great if you get along not so good if you don't!
After our river cruise we looked inside the St. Kilian’s Church. In 1944, a devastating air raid destroyed almost the entire church. The tower was left heavily damaged but still standing, while the rest of the city was in ruins. Thankfully, precious treasures like the 1498 High Altar were safely stored underground in the salt mines we went into on Saturday. We climbed  64 meters to the bell tower and enjoyed looking out over the roofs of Heilbronn and the Neckar valley,  The tower itself is pretty special, it was completed in 1529 and was one of the very first Renaissance buildings built north of the Alps.
We then shared some food and wine at a festival before heading home exhausted!
Monday we headed to the bath house for change of pace with a very relaxing day of swimming, sauna, and mineral bathing in german style if you know what I mean.

  • ATHENS

    Sep 14–16 in Greece ☁️ 32 °C

A bit of back tracking: On Monday the 14th we flew from Frankfurt to Athens which took as over the Swiss Alps. The views were incredible and I was surprised how low we were flying or maybe it was how high some of the Alps are, anyhow having never visited the area before and after seeing how spectacular they are might have to put them on our travel list.
We arrived in Athens to the chaos that it is known for. Somehow made it into the city in time for our 5.30pm food tour. 😋 It was a great way to get our bearings of the city and find out where to eat. If you have ever been to Athens you will know its actually very easy to find your way as every corner has a view of the Acropolis. Also very easy to find someone to eat as all the food delicious and served in large portions .

  • SANTORINI ❤️

    Sep 17–20 in Greece 🌬 25 °C

    Turning 60 in Santorini! 🥂✨
I couldn't have asked for a better way to mark the big 60 than sharing it with Bob, John, Karen, David, and Jenny.
We celebrated with an unforgettable birthday dinner at 5 Senses—the food, wine and sunset views were unbelievable! We’ve been staying at the beautiful Vasilicos caldera suites which has been the absolute perfect base.
Every single turn here is a photo waiting to happen. We spent a day tackling the iconic 10km cliffside walk along the track to Oia. Bravely hired a very little car to explore the island and cooled off with a swim at Kamari Beach. To top it all off, we were lucky enough to be here for the spectacular volcano fireworks celebrating the formation of the caldera.
Grateful for amazing friends, incredible views, and a milestone birthday I’ll never forget! 💙🤍 Photo dump to follow!

  • SIFNOS '

    Sep 20–23 in Greece 🌬 24 °C

Sifnos has officially stolen our hearts! 💙🇬🇷
If you have done the Greek Island ferry's you will know it kinda feels like you are in an end of the world run for your life movie; for us it was a first. The anxiety producing chaos of leaving Santorini and arriving at Sifnos was an eye opener, but we survived!
We stayed at the gorgeous Benaki Hotel, started every single morning with a refreshing swim, and walked the historic donkey path all the way from Apollonia down to Platis Gialos about 12km. And of course, no trip here would be complete without incredible meals at restaurants such as Omega 3.

  • PELOPONNESIA PENINSULA

    Sep 27–30 in Greece ☁️ 22 °C

Our adventure continues! After our flights from Milos were canceled due to a wild electrical storm, we caught a ferry ( spewcat) to Athens that arrived at 10 pm, immediately picked up a hire car with David nominated as driver we embarked on a thrilling two hour late night drive to Nafplio—navigating Greek roads, between highway signs and google maps lets just say it was a relief to arrive at beautiful Nafplio. We spent two wonderful nights in Nafplio exploring its majestic castle perched 990 steps above the town and wandering through the charming, old town. It was incredible to see the massive mega yachts docked in the harbor, and walking along the scenic promenade for a swim in the sea was fun until Bob got an unexpected surprise and was bitten by a fish 😅.
Hitting the road again, we drove from Nafplio to Kalamata, stopping along the way at historical stops. First, we explored the ancient Sanctuary of Epidaurus, marveling at its legendary, remarkably preserved open air theater, famous for its acoustics where a whisper from the center of the stage can be heard clearly in the very last row. Next, we wandered through the sprawling ruins of the Archaeological Site of Mycenae, walking through the iconic Lion Gate, marveling at the massive stone walls and looking out over the ancient citadel of the Bronze Age kings.
After checking in for our overnight stay in Kalamata, we enjoyed a walk along the waterfront. The contrast of small traditional fishing boats alongside mega yachts on the harbour revealed lifestyles that are worlds apart. We were invited to join a game of Mölkky by some locals; it was such fun, and even better because I actually won! On our drive back to Athens, we made a quick stop at Sparta for a photo with the Statue of Leonidas and explored the breathtaking Byzantine ruins of Mystras climbing up the hillside with its hauntingly preserved frescoes and palaces, and then stopped to admire the sheer, dramatic engineering cliffs of the Corinthian Canal.

  • Another 2 nights in Athens

    Oct 1–3 in Greece 🌧 20 °C

We walked from our hotel to the acropolis taking in the spectacular views across Athens. Walking among ancient landmarks like the Parthenon and the Erechtheion you realise you are walking through thousands of years of history. After exploring the Acropolis we went across to The Acropolis Museum which is an architectural masterpiece, with massive glass floors that let you look right down over archaeological excavations of ancient Athens. Inside its quite overwhelming. The top floor is the Parthenon Gallery, where the surviving friezes and original Caryatids( minus one stolen sister which is in the British museum) sit perfectly aligned with the actual temple. It's very impressive. Athens has been a journey of art, architecture, democracy and great food.

  • Dubrovnik

    Oct 2–3 in Croatia ☀️ 24 °C

Dubrovnik was a captivating town, from its war history to its vibrant modern living. Every turn is a another stunning view. We spent our time by walking the ancient city walls for iconic rooftop views, sipping an Aperol Spritz at the legendary Buža Bar and having a refreshing ocean swim below the ancient stone walls. Staying right in the heart of the Old Town was an experience in itself, even if it meant plenty of bustling street noise all night long!
Beyond the stunning coastal beauty, it's impossible not to feel the heavy weight of the city's recent past; learning about the brutal seven-month siege and heavy bombardment in 1991 and 1992 makes the restoration of these historic streets, all the more moving. Standing as a poignant reminder to the horrors of war is a striking sculpture featuring 15 massive, broken colored pencils. It was designed to symbolize interrupted childhoods—representing the 15 children killed in the war. Dubrovnik was an unforgettable stop.

  • Istanbul

    Oct 10–12 in Turkey ☀️ 25 °C

Istanbul is a rich culture, warm in hospitality, and unforgettable in flavor.
On our first night we went on a food tour some of the specialities we tried were,
Kokoreç: Spiced, grilled lamb intestines served in warm bread, delicious 😋
Midye Dolma: Mussels stuffed with spiced rice and finished with a squeeze of fresh lemon. Doner kebab and of course baklava and Turkish tea, but my favourite was the fish kebab, Balık ekmek.
On our second night we followed the crowd and went to a traditional çiğ köfte restaurant which to my surprise served raw minced meat hand kneaded with bulgur, spices, and herbs it was surprisingly delicious and a memorable experience.
    Galata Tower
Up the the hill from our accommodation we climbed the iconic Galata Tower for panoramic views over the skyline, the Bosphorus, and Goldern Horn rivers. Watching the ferries crisscross the water below was a great way to see the sheer scale of this metropolis.
20000 steps and we just skimmed the surface of old town We have 2 more nights in Istanbul in a week or so to do some more exploring 😀.

  • Çanakkale Merkez

    Oct 12–13 in Turkey ⛅ 22 °C

Leaving Istanbul behind today we start our journey with Intrepid Travel! 🚌✨
We made our way south to Çanakkale, driving via the Gallipoli Peninsula and catching breathtaking views of the Dardanelles Strait.
It was a moving and personal stop for Bob, who took time to reflect on his grandfather’s history here.
On April 25, 1915, his grandfather landed at ANZAC Cove—and remarkably survived eight months of grueling trench warfare before being evacuated and transferred to the Western Front. Standing on the very ground where it all happened made history feel incredibly real and humbling.
An unforgettable start to this trip. Onward to Çanakkale where we enjoyed a delicious seafood meal and wondered around the town seeing young and old people playing games and drinking coffee late into the night 🇹🇷❤️

  • Troy and Ephesus

    Oct 13–15 in Turkey ☁️ 25 °C

We started the morning with a drive to legendary Troy, stepping back into myth and history among ancient city walls and ruins that inspired Homer's Iliad. And of course snapping the mandatory photo with the massive Trojan Horse .
After heading south for an overnight stay in Selcuk, we spent the day exploring the breath taking Greco-Roman ruins of Ephesus. Walking down the grand marble streets past the Celsus Library and the Great Theatre really makes you feel like you’ve traveled back in time, the fact that you are doing it with hundreds of other people disgorged from a cruise ship brings you back to the reality of overtourism—the qualities that originally made it special are quickly diminished.
For lunch, we watched traditional gozleme being made from scratch—thin dough rolled out by hand, stuffed with savory fillings, and cooked on a hot plate, they were delicious.
Then came the ultimate travel endurance test: a 16-hour overnight train ride followed by a 5-hour drive to finally arrive in the surreal, fairy chimney landscapes of Cappadocia.

  • Cappadocia

    Oct 15–17 in Turkey ☁️ 17 °C

Cappadocia must be a gift from the fairys. Its like no other place I have been before. The unusual rock formations and cave dwellings, in the words of Ricky Baker, ( Hunt for the Wilderpeople) are majestical.
We had our fingers crossed that the winds would be light and conditions good for our early morning flight. We had only one chance and the weather had meant no balloons had gone up over the last week . We felt incredibly grateful that we got the go ahead for lift off. Rising into the early morning light, hundreds of hot air balloons drifted across the horizon, floating over the deep valleys, jagged ridges, and fairy chimneys that make this region so unique. From above, you get a real sense of how extraordinary the geology is. Over centuries, wind and water eroded the soft volcanic rock into these surreal shapes, while generations of people carved out cave homes, churches, and entire underground networks directly into the cliffs.
After about an hour in the air, our pilot brought us down to a smooth landing right on to the trailer, where we celebrated with a traditional post-flight glass of sparkling. Given the weather delays earlier in the week, getting up into the air felt like a massive win—and it ended up being the absolute highlight of the trip.

  • Whirling Dervishes

    October 15 in Turkey ☁️ 15 °C

After our overnight train journey via Ankara and 6 hour bus ride to Cappadoci we made it with minutes to spare to see the Spiritual ritual of the Whirling Dervishes. Watching the traditional ceremony at Saruhan Caravanserai built in 1249 on the old Silk Road was mesmerising.
The dervishes entered to hauntingly beautiful music and shed their black cloaks, and began to spin with their white robes expanding into circles, one hand reaches toward heaven to receive divine grace while the other points to the earth to share it. This isn't a performance to entertain it’s a living, deeply spiritual prayer of meditation and unity.
