  • I’m off again-Pendeen to Sennen Cove

    June 22, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Started earlier today - 9:30- and have 9 miles to go. It’s supposed to be easier but I already had to scramble! First few pics are of a memorial to miners, Greevor mine and Lelant Steam Engine - tin mines from 1800’s. There are abandoned mines all over - Romans mined here and several of the mines followed their shafts! The views are stunning - the colors of the water-no filter! And lots of fern groves - who knew?! Hiked around Cape Cornwall and had delectable raspberry cake at a quaint cafe.Read more

  • Made it to Sennen Cove beach- Yay!

    June 22, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

Today was easier hiking overall but hotter- Sun all day up to 68 degrees. I stopped at Ballowall Barrow, ancient burial chamber from 1700BC! I hiked 9.3 miles with 1263 elevation gain and with new friends part of the way - a couple (Jaap and Winie) from the Netherlands and then a Swiss couple (Marcus and Kristine)! Turns out we’re all staying at The Old Sucess Inn! I walked the last half mile along the beach sans boots but forgot to take a pic! I will tomorrow- I plan to start my day along the beach!!Read more

  • Goodbye Sennen Cove - onward!

    June 23, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 64 °F

To Porthcurno today - notes say it’s somewhat easier however it’s quite cloudy and windy! I stopped by a gallery inside the old wheel house then onto Land’s End which was unusually commercial. Not too many people so I got a pic in front of the infamous sign. I hiked some with my new friends, Tat and Jan- they met in London nursing school 50 years ago and are celebrating a milestone BD together!Read more

  • Made it to Porthcurno!

    June 23, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 66 °F

Hiked 7.73 miles today - 1231 Beautiful views again today! It was sunny, in the 60’s and quite breezy but easier going most of the time! We stopped for a break at the Pothgwarra National Coastwatch (see how it’s shaped like a ship!) I’m staying the next two nights at the Sea View Inn - very eclectic place and owners! We had a simple delicious charcuterie dinner!Read more

  • Rest day in Porthcurno!

    June 24, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

I slept in a bit, had a lovely breakfast of homemade croissants and gooseberry jam then toured the Minack Theatre- Google it! Fascinating outdoor theatre built 1931 by hand into the rocky cliff side. It was the vision of Rowena Cade and she and her gardener, Billy Rawlings and his crew, moved rocks, set cement and planted grass for the stage and seating. Performances are still held these days (not tonight 😞) and they added extensive tropical plants in the past 20 years.Read more

  • Rest of rest day- awesome!

    June 24, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 66 °F

It was cold and so refreshing! I walked 1.5 miles for a delicious crab dinner at the Logan Rock Inn’s garden! And I finally had the famous Cornish Cream Tea!! Yum!! Early sunset view behind moo “friends” I met on my walk backRead more

  • Made it to Mousehole (pronounced Mowzal)

    June 25, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

Started the day with a steep climb out of Porthcurno Beach - it was a tough day - lots of rocky ups and downs, thick brush with brambles and nettles. I had my first stumble - but only got minor scrapes. I hiked with Tat and Jan. We stopped at a lovely cafe at Lamorna Beach for crab sandwiches and decided after 7.5 miles, 1471 elevation gain and news from oncoming hikers that the next 2 miles were claustrophobic brambles and nettles - we’d take the bus! So a new adventure- 1 mile walk to the bus stop on a beautiful shaded road, short bus ride to Paul and 3/4 mile walk into Mousehole! So glad we did it that way!! Now for a shower!Read more

  • Evening in Mousehole

    June 25, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 64 °F

‘The loveliest village in all of England’ - said Dylan Thomas, poet, of Mousehole. He also frequented The Ship Inn where I’m staying and had a delicious dinner of Seabass Salad Nicoise and sticky toffee pudding- and of course local Tarquin Gin and Tonic. Then I strolled around this delightfully quaint village. The quay was built in 1392 to protect the fishing boats. The extreme tides are easily seen here. Lots of history all around!Read more

  • Mousehole to Marazion- Easy 7 miles

    June 26, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Left quaint Mousehole and walked along the edge of Mount’s Bay - thru Newly. - a lively fishing town (see the fishermen on a break?) thru Penzance - big village - to Marazion and the famous
St Michael’s Mount. Along the walkway there ware many carvings made from driftwood. Had a lovely lunch of crab and scones and then cream tea! I ran into Jaap and Winie from the Netherlands that I met in Pendeen!!Read more

  • St Michael’s Mount - amazing!!

    June 26, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

I took a little ferry boat across to the mount, walked about, and toured inside the castle. The same family has owned it for 350 years and it was formerly a priory, royal owned, and held by the military. The chapel has stained glass windows of St Michael. The Blue room was a ladies parlour. The gardens were beautiful and I even relaxed on the “Great lawn.” I walked across the walkway b/c it was low tide-sooo cool. Sarah and I did this together 10 years ago! I’m staying at the Beach Club hotel - was greeted with Prosecco- yum! My room is tiny but perfect- it has a bathtub so I’m taking an Epsom salt soak later tonight!!Read more

  • Goodnight from Penzance!

    June 26, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

I enjoyed a “summer G&T” at my hotel then walked thru this lovely pathway to The Bakehouse for a fine dining experience- blue cheese with roasted pear salad and grilled hake with local seasonal veggies- Yum! I’ve successfully defeated my anxiety over eating out alone!! On the way back I strolled thru this beautiful quirky park - Penlee, it even has an outdoor theatre! And my Epsom soak once back at my hotel was divine🥱😴Read more

  • Porthleven to Praa Sands

    June 27, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Life continues to teach me that best laid plans are meant to change! Plan A - hike 10.5 miles changed to Plan B - bus then hike 5 miles then changed to plan C when I missed the bus stop!! Apparently even if you ask in an American accent certain bus drivers don’t announce the stops! So I took the bus to Porthleven- where I’m staying tonight and hiked back to Praa Sands. Take that!! Gray windy day and the views still outstanding! I’m now at a beach cafe figuring out the bus schedule after consuming a delectable housemade mackerel pate and a half pint!!Read more

  • Lovely Porthleven!

    June 27, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

After my lunch in Praa Sands I checked out the beach then caught the U4 bus back to Porthleven. I’m right on the harbour at the Harbour Inn and have a very quaint and comfy room! After a hot shower I had a gin and tonic - My new favourite is St Ives Tarquin’s gin - they have several unique flavours - todays was peach and passion fruit - very refreshing! Then I ordered local mussels in cream broth at Amilee’s- just after I had opened all the shells a seagull tried to land on my table! ARGH! He didn’t get any food but managed to tip my wine into my bowl and lap!! So I had extra wine flavoured broth!! Damn gulls are so aggressive! After dinner I strolled around town - it has two distinct churches! Goodnight!!Read more

  • Made it to Lizard-Yahoooo!

    June 28, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

Hiked from Porthleven to Mullion Cove (7 miles) in grey drizzle and the views were still amazing! I met a new hiking friend, Annette, from Copenhagen who’s job is also based in the Research Triangle in Durham! She’s coming next month-is the universe amazing or what?! We hiked passed the Storm Church- a structure has existed there since 6th Century! The black birds are Cornwall Chough- they had been extinct from the coast for 50 years and came back in 2001. The other bird is a Stonechat - such a pretty song! We hiked thru a pebble beach by Lake Loe- freshwater right next to the coast, a monument to those lost at sea and many coves. At Mullion Cove she hiked on and I walked a mile into town to catch a bus to Lizard. I met my Netherland friends at the bus stop!! Crazy! Annette and I are to meet up for dinner tonight.Read more

  • Lizard Sunset

    June 28, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

I’m at The Top House Inn in Lizard, UK for the next 2 nights- I’m hoping to hike part of the path I missed tomorrow. My room is delightful and I had fish and chips (freshly caught cod) with Annette for dinner. Then I walked 1/2 mile thru the eclectic town to Lizard Point - the southernmost part of Britain- it was ruggedly beautiful in the Sun setting light!! Now to sleep!Read more

  • Awesome “rest” day at Kynance Cove

  • Pub, Taxi, Train, Express, LHR Hilton!

    June 30, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 63 °F

Rainy, rainy day so I nestled up on a bench in the Top House pub with a pot of tea and edited my manuscript till noon the caught a crazy taxi ride (the drivers told me about his bit-coin investments the whole way) then caught the train in Redruth and rode and edited for 4 miles, then caught the Heathrow Express and walked to this “lovely” Hilton Garden Inn! Why does traveling make one so weary!?Read more
