There is nothing like traveling with family; completely independently, these strays from the naki booked the same flight, but business class, of course!

  • Pamplona, at last

    May 10, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Just had a shower and tucked up in bed, midnight local time, 10am NZ.( We left 8.30 pm Nz yesterday)
    Smooth run.
    Tip;
    - 3 months of duolingo Spanish isn't going to cut it!
    - I wonder if Spains productivity is any better than ours if everyone is having quality bathroom time?Read more

  • Pamplona walkabout

    May 11, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

A beautiful day in Pamplona for a walk(10 to 27 degrees)
Soaked up the Running of the Bulls history with a visit to the now retired (2019) bull ring, capacity ~20,000 people.
Good story, and it all makes our Rodeo's look pretty tame. What would the p.c. brigade have to say about this? A tough business all round.
The butchers / deli was cool, boning out while you wait. Rabbit on sale just to left of customer.

  • Pamplona self guided tiki tour.

    May 11, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

A nice sunny day in Pamplona (12 - 27 degrees), and we spent a good part of the day checking out the Running of the Bulls set up. It's a rough business, and it makes our Rodeos look pretty civilized imo. This bull ring recently decommissioned due to council pressure but holds 20,000 people, pretty cool. Joanne's standing behind a protective barrier.
The butchery was awesome; boning out fresh meat in front of you. Rabbits for sale to the left of the customer. Unfortunately, we'd eaten already.
Some pretty awesome eateries which we resisted until it hit the days high , when an ice cream proved a must have.
Lovely old Town and a reintroduction to cobbles, old terraced houses, and stag and hens groups- its Saturday night!
    Today's tips;
Google translate is awesome; a heck of a lot better than my Spanish, anyway!

  • Pamplona day 2

    May 12, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

    Another sunny day.
Upskilled and tried a bus today, pretty cheap by nz standards. A local even offered to pay for us. Generally very helpful, except for some info staff at railways and airport, that are pumping people through at extreme rates! (Stressed)
Quite a few Camino walkers and a few bikes passing through, which makes me a wee bit jealous. 😀
Moving on tomorrow by fast rail back to Madrid.
Highly recommend Pamplona- a great city with a friendly vibe.
Today's tip; if you're going to walk 20km, don't be a Bruce (!) Put decent shoes on, not sandels. Only 1 blister, thankfully.

  • View from our Hotel Sky Bar isn't too bad...a bit breasy tonight but we'll come back!.
The views from 5th floor bedroom window. I hope those people quite down tonight. Double glazed 😋Complimentary wine, I could get used to this. This was cheaper than an Air bnb too.Personal quirke but this was cool engineering.

    Welcome (back) to Madrid

    May 13, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

    Hola from Madrid.
I think we deserve a pat on the back for catching 2 trains today and navigating ourselves through the Madrid metro. Quite worried when you have to go through electronic gates, and there's no way back without paying if you get it wrong.
I know how a cull cow feels now.
A good result, anyway, emerging into 27 degrees sunshine from the underground, a short walk to the hotel .
Interestingly, they're still predominantly cork top wine bottles; we haven't had a cork screw for the last 3 days, quite the crisis.
The supermercado was several floors and required taking this baby trolley up and down ramps. Got these cool wheels that self lock on the elevator, so no brakes are required. Great engineering 👍.
Mainly a traveling, admin, and maintenance (aka wine) day today. Sorted our data after not being able to buy a sim card over the weekend. Bugger.
We're now on a European sim, New phone number, same email.
Hot tip (not); I've noticed many shop counters have chairs around them. I think you're supposed to patiently pull up a pew and wait until they get to you. Commonly 4 plus in a que. Not sure I enjoy this aspect of Spanish culture. God help us if kiwis latch onto it.

  • Madrid, On and Off

    May 14, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

A day on the hop on/ off bus. It seemed the most practical way to view this city of 6.7m people.
The footpaths outside our hotel are 10m wide, and you still struggle to walk side by side in a forward direction.
Apparently, the Spanish economy is going pretty well by EU standards, and people seem pretty happy. Noticeable they seem to take pride in their appearance and not a lot of homeless about considering the population. Very well presented bunch with quite different clothing choices to NZ.
I think they could employ a few more gardeners, though, as the current lot don't seem to have come back from the Christmas break. A bit of round up wouldn't go amiss.
Some impressive green spaces all the same, which we mostly enjoyed more than the history on offer.
The local cuisine went down a treat tonight, Pintxos ( tapas ) were delivered every few minutes, and they just kept coming. A bit of a trap for a country lad that likes an empty plate!

  • Segovia and Avila day trip.

    May 15, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

A day trip out to Segovia in the north west to view an 1800 year old Aquaduct and Cathedral. Both are very impressive engineering features. No Cement in the Aquaduct makes it even more impressive. There are no earthquake engineering issues here, apparently.
Onward to Avila to check out the longest city walls still in existence in Europe. Apparently, the ashes from cremations were used to fill the walls.
We went to check out a museum on the way home but got turned away due to a festival starting tonight. Due to an early start tomorrow, I think we'll miss the fireworks tonight , we'll see.
We checked out the Real Madrid stadium ( street view only) yesterday, but we're not big enough fans to justify the $75 pp entry fee to peek around the door.
Off to Portugal tomorrow in keeping with the plan C itinerary.

  • Rua do Almada, our street for a couple of days.
This Porto bridge was designed by the same dude as the Eiffel tower.Traditional Portugese tiling, a few great examples around that are hard to appreciate on camera.

    Porto, Portugal

    May 16, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Well, a quick start to the day with an alarm set to 3.30 am to catch the plane from Madrid to Portugal.
Unfortunately, after being awake earlier, we both slept through it.
Fortunately, the old dairy farmers' skills woke me up two minutes before the taxi was due. Seven minutes later, we'd packed, gone by elevator (3 mins) down 5 floors, and were in the taxi and off. Phew.
A great piece of luck at the Porto airport as a local guide (off duty) helped us out with the metro and then walked us right to our front door . Outstanding guy.
Unfortunately...a few people have left out key information when giving instructions, but Fortunately, no complete disasters yet!
Enjoyed an hour in the Sun catching our breath, and a late breakfast of Portugals finest baking...icing sugar everywhere but pretty nice. A walking tour this arvo (in our first rain) was as usual great, and our day was done with a waterfront wander along the river.
Tip: - Don't set your alarm in a different room to where you're sleeping 😴.
Don't bury your laptop in your carry-on even though it's not ever been a problem in security....3 trips through the scanner and a drug swab, I'll remember this one.

  • Porto unguided tour

    May 17, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

We didn't really feel like a full day on a bus, so we opted to visit the Contemporary Art museum for the cultural element in the itinerary. Enjoyed their garden as well in spite of a bit of rain. Then back to town by public bus, arguably as interesting as some (not all) of the art.
A wander over yesterday's depicted Bridge with people, trains, bikes, and scooters all managing to miss each other, in effectively a double lane space.
Home for a siesta ( oh, we're in Portugal) and a coffee and then a wander to the Palace gardens and some window shopping.
Thank goodness for Google maps....I'd be pretty stuffed without it. Panicked for a while when we got here as my data refused to work, but a good talking too, ( and the on off button) sorted it. Phew.
