• I Stole Lauren’s 86cm Barra

    May 24, 2023 in Australia

“Come out and I’ll get you a Barra” I told Lauren, and she replied “I’ll catch one, and it’ll be bigger than yours”. It was on!
Down to spot X and I loaded her up with a monster cherabin. But the tide shifted quickly and we had to move. I sounded out a great spot 50 meters away and we set up. After 15 minutes and a couple of casts, plenty of instruction by me, “lift the rod, jiggle it, wind in, cast again, use it like a lure” and so one she was losing interest. She wound in and said “look, the cherabin is dead”. I told her it didn’t matter and I was certain this snag was holding good fish. Not convinced she handed me the rod and opened a bag of chips. I threw out and worked the line up and down, not a minute later I was on, I tried to hand her the rod and she refused which delighted me, it was a horse in thick timber and it needed some heavy hands 😊
We only just landed it, Lauren must have thought I could lift the fish into the net (which is impossible given how heavy it was) cause on her first netting attempt the net never went in the water. I was now yelling in frustration “put the net in the water”, and we got it. 86cm was my biggest for the year and man I was exited. We released it after a couple of pictures and it was such a great feeling to spear the big girl in and watch her swim away.
I don’t feel bad, I caught it fare and square 😆
